Any IT geeks in here

Got an issue with my steam powered PC.

Seems that I can't download from any websites anylonger?

Get this error message ......

HTTP 403 (Forbidden)

Messed around with my security settings as suggested by microsoft, no difference.

Added the required addresses to privacy and trusted sites lists, no diff.

Running XP SP1, IE 6 on a (don't laugh) P2 450
Any pointers anyone?

Cheers

Usually get that when the web page you are viewing has problems, links broken, maintenence/working on the site etc not your pc to blame, i could be wrong...
Not sure what you could do to solve it though.

The web server thinks that the HTTP data stream sent your web browser is correct, but access to the resource identified by the URL (folder or file) is forbidden - possibly no directory browsing settings on the website you're trying to access.

We don't allow directory browsing on our servers.

Download Firefox and try the same site.

check that you dont have a proxy server setup.

Cheers peeps.

No proxy server set up.

I connect through a Netgear wireless router. Checked the settings on the firewall for that. No issues.

I feel myself reaching for the windows disc!!

A well, when all else fails get the digital dettol and a wire brush and show it who's boss.

On the other hand I might just buy a new box.

Was thinking about one of these....

It's as much as i need.

Cheers peeps

What happened to cause it to break? Did you modify anything, install anything, switch internet providers or something?

Did it ever work before?

Hi,
Try the following.

Click Start
Click Run
type cmd in the box and press enter, a dos window will open
at the prompt type, ping www.google.com, and press enter
if you see something like,

reply from 66.249.93.147 bytes=32 time=34ns TTL=240

you are talking to the the web

If you get

Request timed out

or something else your pc is not connecting to the internet. This could be a hardware problem or cable fallen out etc. or the problem could be a firewall setting preventing access or software screw up

good luck

Re: Any IT geeks in here

If the above fails.

from the cmd window above

type

nslookup www.google.com

you should expect something ending in :-

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: www.l.google.com
Addresses: 216.239.59.99, 216.239.59.104, 216.239.59.103, 216.239.59.147
Aliases: www.google.com

if you get the above, your DNS is resolving correctly

so then try

tracert www.google.com

you should expect something like (but with different addresses):-

Tracing route to www.l.google.com [216.239.59.147]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 10.34.220.81
2 9 ms 29 ms 10 ms 10.108.0.1
3 23 ms 7 ms 10 ms 62.30.32.38
4 10 ms 7 ms 15 ms pres-t3core-1a-ge-010-0.inet.ntl.com [80.0.160.69]
5 20 ms 13 ms 23 ms lee-bb-a-ge-330-0.inet.ntl.com [213.105.175.173]
6 13 ms 14 ms 24 ms nth-bb-b-so-100-0.inet.ntl.com [62.253.185.101]
7 23 ms 27 ms 16 ms tele-ic-1-as0-0.inet.ntl.com [62.253.184.2]
8 31 ms 34 ms 25 ms 212.250.14.66
9 45 ms 31 ms 44 ms 209.85.252.40
10 41 ms 39 ms 40 ms 209.85.250.216
11 37 ms 49 ms 39 ms 64.233.174.185
12 46 ms 60 ms 41 ms 216.239.49.126
13 49 ms 43 ms 39 ms gv-in-f147.google.com [216.239.59.147]

Trace complete.

:\WINDOWS\system32>

Try the above and post results if they show any problems

You should also try turning off all of your PC and networking equipment, then starting with the 1st device that connects you to the outside world turn each one on in sequence working back to your PC allowing a couple of minutes between each device.

Every so often I have to do this on my home network to solve the same issue as you.
