Bike wont start or shift above first gear - please help me

I changed the gear selecter on my naked curvy today and I think I've caused a problem. All went well and I took the bike for a quick spin to make sure it was shifting etc. I had no problems at this point and may have even said something along the lines of "this maintenance thing isnt so hard".

I decided to fill the bike with fuel as I'm planning on a big run tmrw and now seemed a good time. When I went to restart after the refill, nothing. I didn't worry initially as the clutch switch is bypassed on my bike (previous owners bodge as it has the wrong clutch mount) and its just needed a jiggle to get it going again in the past. Couldnt get anywhere with this so rather than call the AA (again) I just pushed the bike the 1/2 mile home to ponder the problem.

When home I suspected I may have done something with the safety switch that prevents starting the bike in gear so tried starting it in gear, out of gear and all combos. This is when I noticed it would only go from neutral into first. Any attempt to shift up just put it back into neutral. I dont know if this is because it isnt running or if its a part of the problem, but thought I would throw it in.

The other thing worth mentioning is that the clutch switch was bodged with a piece of wire bridging the terminals. Jiggling this wire usually gets it going but when this didnt work I cut the switch off and just joined the wires. Am I right in thinking that this should comletely rule out the clutch switch as the problem because I've bypassed it or have I just ruined any chance I had of getting it going?

Any help would be much appreciated because I really wanted to go on a long ride tmrw and I'm getting really frustrated at little issues on my bike.

Have you checked the side stand switch?

Checked as in how? It wont start with it up or down but I've not fiddled with the switch at all.

you have done what i did
you put the gear conection from the bar to the engine on upside down
took me an hour to work it out
easy test try going down the gears the wrong way eg try puting it into 5th as normal but you will actually be puting it in first

Not the kill switch is it?

Are you trying to change gear without the engine running? Because it isn't easy unless you roll the bike back and forward in between changes (with the clutch out)

Surey not otherwise it wouldnt have been fine on my way to the petrol station?

As for the killwitch, I checked that.

And yes, I am talking about changing gear without it running. I'm not sure if thats part of the problem, the main one is that it wont start, just thought it might be worth mentioning.

Thanks for the thoughts so far guys.

I think I'm going to try to bypass the clutch and side stand switches to see if that helps.

For the clutch the two wires that go into the plug are connected together, am I right in thinking that this is it bypassed?

If it is and I go about the same way for the sidestand, will that be both bypassed?

So what you're saying is the gear lever won't shift at all? And as a result the bike won't start? As suggested try rocking the bike backward and forward to change gear, with the side stand up and the clutch all the way in the bike should try to start. You could try taking the wire off the clutch lever and checking the contacts or bypassing it with a paperclip.

Sorry, I seem to have confused the issue.

The main problem is that the bike wont start, as in, not a thing on the button. I'm fairly certain its one of the idiot switches thats doing it. I tried putting it into a different gear and starting it as I was clutching at straws. Lever moves fine but will only go from 1st to neutral and back again. I dont know if this is even a problem, my mainone is definately figuring out what piece of wiring is preventing my bike starting.

Anyone shed any light on bypassing the safety switches?
