AV Software
I need new anti virus software. What's the best one to get?
Using Norton at the mo but it's out of date now so want to upgrade rather than paying a new subscription fee! What ya recommend? |
Re: AV Software
AVG from Grisoft
Although I did go for the "paid for" version. Not sure if they still do the free version?! Otherwise you might want to check out TrendMicro which does a free online scan for you. |
Re: AV Software
Don't mind paying for it, just wanna make sure I get the best I can.

Re: AV Software
I've used Mcaffee for years never had a bit of trouble with it. I hate norton and I'd never install it. But I know alot of people who hate mcaffee and love norton.
I installed the free AVG on Liz's mums laptop a while ago and its crippled it it takes ages to update itself when its first logged on and its made the whole thing run like a bag o bolts. As did the Norton that was installed previously on it. IMHO stick with Mcaffee |
Re: AV Software
Avast! Free and very, very good! No spam, virus, trojan on my PC since I installed it! Updates automatically everytime you connect to the net. Sure people will second that!

I have the free version on 5 PC's no problems. |
Re: AV Software
My employers signed an agreement with McAffee that enables them to supply their software to all staff for home use. I now install this. In the past I used to use Avira Antivir free on my linux systems and avast as the AVG stuff and me just could not get on

Re: AV Software
AVG paid for version.

Re: AV Software
I get Norton for a paltry few dollars courtesy of using it at work, but it seemed to be slowing processor intensive aplications down. My wife does a lot of craft stuff with photoshop and that was worst.
I installed the free version of AVG and it's a lot better. Cheers Keith |
Re: AV Software
Used AVG free edition on our old pc and was so impressed we have it on this new one. I also have MacAfee security suite. So far, so good:D

Re: AV Software
Run Norton internet security on mine, was renewal time last month. Had a look at subscription on Symantec's site, 40 quid. Pc world.. 25 quid for the same thing? Bought the new one from the shop!

Re: AV Software
Wouldnt touch Norton at all, dangerous sw which deletes perfectly good files or stuff that is needed to run other apps.
+1 for Avast! for me, excellent sw works in background and doesnt give me any scares. Finds trojans and stuff no bother. Free!!! |

Re: AV Software
Kaspersky is good, as is Panda (at detecting viruses & spyware). I had a right 'mare with Panda 2007 on an XPSP2B box, runs ok on Win2K though. I like Mcaffee & I ran Norton for years, I don't like AVG or any free antivirus, you get what you *don't* pay for.
Even running an antivirus you should also do online scans like Pandas active (they also do a total scan), Kasperskys (although that will, quite handily, recognise some spyware as viruses) & Trend, etc. A second opinion is always good, especially on any suspicious files you might have downloaded or if you notice any suspicious listening/open ports (shell>netstat -a).
