Question For The Gamers

As the long winter nights draw in I find myself getting the urge to lose myself in a game, but I'm not a super-gamer by any means, and I hanker after some of the old-style RPG's. I've found a site on t'interweb that allows you to download old games to play on your PC and I was hoping that some of you experts would give your opinion.

This is the site, and for a very small sum it seems as though I could get quite a few to keep me amused:-D

http://free-game-downloads.mosw.com/

Any thoughts?

you have to know what you like. Try to borrow few games before you commit. RPG aren't for everyone. If you want one try Guild Wars.

Funny how it's all guys replying!

I haven't got the killer instinct,or the time, or the skills to get into online games, and I have a PS2, and most of my games are RPG's, but I've completed them all. I just fancy playing some of the simple, old-school stuff.

About a third of those i play with are girls, ...if you get my drift?

there is no difference in skill either, its fun getting your butt kicked by a group of girlies, all of which are over 18 and consenting adults,

Re: Question For The Gamers

I haven't tried downloading from that site, but old PC games might be incompatible with the newer OS.

Birth of the Federation and other DOS based games wouldn't work properly when I changed to XP from 98. Might work if they're run in an emulator.

What PS2 RPG's do you have?

Dark Cloud, Sword of Vermillion, Vandal Hearts, Star Ocean, I could go on. The best thing about the PS2 was still being able to play all your PS1 games on it.

Re: Question For The Gamers

All of the Dizzy games are up there. So, play Magicland Dizzy. Not an old-style RPG, it's the best platform game ever made. (under Abandonware, Adventure) Ecco the Dolphin's in there too, it was actually quite rubbish but talk about relaxing. And the bit at the start where you jump... "How high in the sky can you fly?" and the vortex strikes, and when you land the sea's empty... WRROMMMMMMM... Ah, that'll seem like gibberish to anyone who didn't play it, but it's one of the all-time great gaming moments.

Just play Final Fantasy 7 again, best game ever.

Oy, Law, Birth of the Federation has a fairly good XP patch now, it's a wee bit flakey still but not too bad.

Re: Question For The Gamers

Just got round to digging out my PS2 collection (as I dont know if your PC will handle "modern" games......
Try

.hack 1 - Infection
.hack 2 - Muation
.hack 3 - Outbreak
.hack 4 - Quarantine

The above are a virtual online-game (in that it simulates an online game)

Atelier Iris - Eternal Mana

Breath of Fire - Dragon Quarter

Disgaea - Hour of Darkness - Not an RPG, but RPG turn based puzzle strategy game thats quite fun.

Final Fantasy IX

Final Fantasy X

Final Fantasy X-2

Kingdom Hearts --- Final Fantasy meets Mickey Mouse (Square/Disney project)

Star Ocean - Till the End of Time

Most of the above are in my "Games to be played" stack rather than games I have played. I guess that if our paths were to cross I could be persuaded to loan most of the above to you.

Final Fantasy 6 (Super-Nintendo) is very goood, 5 isnt bad and the earlier ones a little dated.

Been playing some interesting ones on my PSP - which now, like the PS2 plays most PS1 games too :)

Re: Question For The Gamers

The original Phantasy Star is available to download for PC I see... That would possibly be considered cheeky though. Maybe I'm biased because I played it first time round, but I just replayed it when it came out for the gameboy advance, and it was still pretty fantastic. You can kind of tell the design team for FF7 had played it, put it that way

If we are going retro then get a Megadrive emulator and Phantasy Star it :p

Get a NES emulator and get the early FF games.

Thanks for all your replies:smt023

I have the FF series 7-10, so I could just dig those and my PS2 out and replay them. Sephiroth....................mmm!

I'll also check out downloading an emulator. There are loads of games I would have loved to play a few years ago but never had the time or spare cash to do so.

Think I'll not replay the Resident Evil ones though, and definitely NOT Silent Hill.................that game scared the cr*p out of me:-D

If you want to try any of the pre-Sephiroth Final Fantasy VII games, let me know and I will sort that out for you :) as I have a ton of emulators and games. If its Megadrive/SNES Games then they are small enough to email etc.

you should definately get red alert 2 and then yuri's revenge. i've completed it many a time (yes, very sad), but i still come back for more. and you can set up other games that aren't missions, reall good fun and a bit tactical if you want as well.

I can throughly recommend Black for the PS2. Basically, you play part of a Black-Ops team sent on various assignments, only you find out later it's not the government sending you on those assignments. I won't spoil the end of it though.

Lots of shooting & killing folks. It can be a little easy once you get the hang of how the AI works, but wait until the end sequence on the last level. So far I've only done it on the "easy" setting.

Build yourself a beast of a computer and get some good online First Person shooters.

These should be:-
Counter strike (source)
Unreal tournament 2004
Unreal tournament 3

Brilliant games! But require time to get good at...
