Lent
So, pancake day is here, yummy, scrummy pancakes! Yay!
But, don't forget what it symbolises, the day before Lent. What are you giving up until Easter then? For me, it's going to be Alcohol. I drink too much 'cos I'm at home a lot at the moment (knee, operation, blah blah blah) and am sick of it. So, what are you all turning your back on? Will you stick to your guns for the whole 40 days? |
Re: Lent
giving up, giving up, giving a f*ck...

Alcohol, I'd give up, but since I don't drink that much anyway that's not much of a hardship. Might try and give up taking the cage to work! :riding: But what I shall probably do is NOTHING as I'm not religious and so to sacrifice something in return for some blessing from some god would be hypocritical of me IMHO :D |
Re: Lent
Even though I was sent to a Catholic school, I am the MOST non-religious person!
I'm just using Lent as a means to an end. I need to cut back, and it's as good a time as any. |
Re: Lent
Isn't it a throw back from when some jewsih people went into the wilderness after being imprisoned by the pharoh (who may have been called Joseph). Angels killing first born sons & stuff. Then Kirk Douglas getting nailed to a tree for being spartacus before Santa Claus was born in a dairy?
Not sure where Noah fitted into all this but Indiana Jones gave his ark to the americans for safe keeping so it must be true. I think it happened a long time ago in a galaxy far away. |
Re: Lent
if i dont give up anything can i still have pancakes?????
|
Re: Lent
Well I'm not religious, so really I don't have to give up anything. But I guess its a reason to do something.
I'll give up being a bit lazy with learning stuff, and learn as I go along instead...then exam time wont be so stressfull Last semester of Uni ever  Matt |

Because sometimes, people need that extra bit of help with something. If you keep plodding along saying "yeah, I'll change next week", then a year goes by and it's the same old same old. I'm not doing it for a religious principal, I'm doing it because I want to, it's a target that's easy to spot with a defined start and end. Much like New Year resolutions, just a month late! |
Re: Lent

Re: Lent

Re: Lent
"Shrove-Tuesday, at whose entrance in the morning all the whole kingdom is inquiet, but by that time the clocke strikes eleven, which (by the help of a knavish sexton) is commonly before nine, then there is a bell rung, cal'd the Pancake-bell, the sound whereof makes thousands of people distracted, and forgetful either of manners or humanitie; then there is a thing called wheaten floure, which the cookes do mingle with water, eggs, spice, and other tragical, magical inchantments, and then they put it by little and little into a frying pan of boiling suet, where it makes a confused dismal hissing, (like the Lernean Snakes in the reeds of Acheron, Stix, or Phlegeton) until at last, by the skill of the Cooke, it is transformed into the forme of a Flip-Jack, cal'd a Pancake, which ominous incantation the ignorant people doe devoure very greedily."
-John Taylor, English poet (1580 - 1654) ; "Jack-a-Lent, His Beginning and Entertainment" (1630) I hope that all of you knavish sextons enjoy your Flip-Jacks, just watch out for those Lernean Snakes of the Styx. |
Re: Lent
Suprised nobody's commited to giving up crashing for Lent.
Mind you, 40 days... I mean, I'm all for doing my bit for little baby Jesus, but 40 days without crashing is asking a bit much... |

Re: Lent
I could give up pancakes... but that would actually be hard as I luuuurve them and will usually have 'Shrove Tuesday' a couple of days a month.
Hmmm - after carefully considering past threads... I'll try to give up chewing the sides of my fingers. |
