Ridig with no Tax / No Registration.

Hello,
I have this friend that is getting a new bike delivered on 28th feb, but on a 08 plate so its not technically legal till 1st march. He has the day off on 29th Feb and knowing what he's like he is gonna be really tempted to ride it.

Does anyone know what the penalty would be if he is caught riding it before the 1st of march? He has it insured from 28th feb so that shoudn't be an issue, but i would like to let him know how much trouble he would be in to try and persuade him its not worth it.

He does have it insured from 28th feb - so that wouldn't be an issue.

Anyone know how these things work?

Ta Very Much.

You mean the 29th Feb, not sure about this one but it could result in losing his licence for a period and a retake of test IIRC...

Most probably wrong, but interested to find out...

I think you'll find reading the small print the bike has to be road legal for the insurance to be valid, so not being registered will invalidate it ?

Cheers Mark.

Chain it up, then give the keys to the chain to someone you trust - like Mum / Dad / Wife / etc. In fact let them chain it up. no matter how tempted, you cannot give in.

Best idea, your life, your bike, your consequences. Are you willing to risk it all?

Depends really. if it was a £30 fine for not having a number plate - then yeah i'd run the gauntlet.

However as rictus pointed out - the insurance is unlikely to be valid if its not road legal - thats a whole different kettle of fish with much more serious consequences that i wouldn't be prepaired to risk.

No tax, no reg, no insurance (invalid insurance).

You know that little lot is a creaming for sure ;)

At the end of the day, would you 'enjoy' the ride knowing the consequences of getting caught/accident anyway?

I'd say if you have any fear of the consequences, then probably not, so what is the point!?!?! ;)

Re: Ridig with no Tax / No Registration.

No insurance - bike seized £125 cost to recover plus a daily charge if not collected that day and £200 on the spot fine and 6 points on the licence (if you don't already have 6 - if you do then it's off to court ya go).

No tax - £60 fine

I would say certainly stay off the road, the plate in itself will attract the local bill and you will get the above as a matter of course.

Not worth chancing for one day !!!

ill scale it down

No Tax = trouble
No insurance = more trouble
No registration = stupid amounts of trouble

Friend banned before hes legal.... price less amount of trouble

For the sake of a day or few days just wait, its not worth the amount grief it will casue, yup it can a whole load of problems when you get stopped and nothing is correct.

Its not just cops you have to worry about, lets face it there is minimal police presence these days.

Cameras are what will catch you out.

Definitely not worth it IMO.

It's going to be really obvious to any occifer that you're illegal, so if any plod sees your plate you're buggered.

You need to tell this knobster friend that he's being a complete divi and that picking up the soap for a month might not be such a good idea if said anal virginity is to be preserved;)

It will be insured for theft only until the Tax and Registration are complete (1st march). If he rides it on the road before 1st march he will be riding an unregistered, untaxed and uninsured bike. This info comes from my neighbour who is a high ranking traffic cop.

New Leaf 26-02-08 06:04 PM

Re: Ridig with no Tax / No Registration.

Thanks for all the info guys - especially Dave for the info from a traffic cop - i've passed this onto my knob faced knobster of a 'friend'

He tells me he has aranged to go into work on the 29th (in the car) so he is not sat at home listening to the naughty voices in his head telling him to go for a ride.

I thought to get tax you need to have valid insurance - so if you also have an invalid registration then this would mean he would be riding without tax or insurance.

Can he not wait a day? An 08 plate will stick out like a sore thumb, especially to the cops out there that arent too keen on bikers!

SoulKiss 28-02-08 09:16 AM

Re: Ridig with no Tax / No Registration.

Was thinking the same thing - my thoughts had been to stick my old SV (still my bike even thou under insurance negotiation) 06 plate on my bike and swap them at midnight on the 1st :)

Best leave it with the dealer until then tho I think :)

Its here now - sat on my drive gleaming in the sun - all nice and shiney!

Blimey - this is harder that i thought it was gonna be. I can't even concentrate on my job. I've got a customer agreement to draft before the end of the day and i haven't even started it - just keep going outside to dust it and admire it.

Wifey and will be home with baby in a minute - am gonna get her to hide they keys for me before i do something stupid.

I saw a Golf driven on the road with a 08 plate the other day.

I assume it was being delivered to the VW dealers a couple miles away as it had one of those funny white identity plates in the windscreen.

Not on my street - but then I live in a private gated development.

Did a few trips on my SV which would have been uninsured, untaxed AND unlicensed on the real road before I passed my test :)

Skip - thanks for the invite.

I would love to come along, but saturday is my son's 2nd birthday party.

The penanlty for going on a ride out on that day would be far worse than anything the plod can throw at me for riding it before 1st march. My missus would never talk to me again. :-(

I'll be checking the EAR section for the next rideout though.

Re: Ridig with no Tax / No Registration.

Have you spoken to your insurance company. If they say OK then go for it tax & numberplate **** that ?30 for numberplate ? Riding an '08 2 days early has got to be worth that.

But make sure ins is fully valid
