I stumbled across this today, bit of a long article but some quite startling evidence about the potential future of men with regards to fertility. You can skip past the first bit about the starlings as there's probably only me that's interested in that bit :mrgreen:

Read that yesterday in the daily mail, it's all an evil plot by women. Dumping hormones in water. Grrr!

Did my masters project on this at the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology and how to break down ethinyloestradiol (EE2) by improved sewage treatment work. They are still working on it, it's a problem that has been around for a while.

I love the statistics used in that article:

OK, but don't tell us how many babies were born in the US and Japan, and the original 106/100 statistic was taken globally, so why narrow the field of observation?

This link (http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0005083.html) shows more accurate statistical information, and shows that total population gender differences are changing on average by 0.15 females per male per year. Some places, such as the former USSR, have far higher proportion of women to men, whereas others like China, have far more men than the global average.

That means less choice for women year on year, and more choice for us men. How is that a bad thing for us directly? That would mean that in the future, if we're not happy with how we're being treated by any woman, we go and find another, much easier.

But for the genepool as a whole, well, there's nothing conclusive from this research :)

There doesnt seem to be a global shortage of men(or women)at the moment,and no prospect of such a shortage.You could argue that nearly all our worlds problems are caused by too many men and women-----

China have a good setup. Maybe something from China can be adopted :D China's setup is:

If you want children, you MUST have a marriage licence first. Then you have to apply for a licence for each child (which the state can decline if they so wish).

It's only possible to have one child licence, regardless of your social status/wealth etc.

If you have unlicenced children (out of wedlock or too many kids) then you're severely fined, and if you can't pay the fine, you're imprisoned.

However, they are thinking of stopping this policy, mainly as it leads to unlicenced children being sold on the black market.

ok so in the short term the competition between females for males is no doubt beneficial to men, but in terms of widening a gene pool = not good!! we'll all become inbred....I say 'become' obviously some may have already beaten us to it :lol:


I've always thought that was quite a good policy, would deter the chavs from breeding :D

Yep, I think overpopulation is a huge problem. I'm reading a book at the moment called, "Metaman". It's essentially about the way that 'mankind' and his associated effects on the world (buildings, transport networks etc.) are akin to a giant living organism, of which we as individuals are essentially just 'cells' performing particular tasks. One of the biggest problems for metaman to overcome in order to thrive is that of overpopulation as aside from being a problem in itself, it also speeds up the rate at which other significant problems (global warming, peak oil, etc.) are going to come about.

Throws up interesting ethical dilemas: Is it more 'moral' to have an 'opt out' form of contraception than it is to allow overpopulation to get to the stage where billions die of starvation. IE by default everyone is rendered unable to produce and you have to pass a parenting test, not have a criminal record, to be given a course of the antidote and even then be limited to 2 children max?

Only Bikers* should be allowed to have sex, thereby ending overpopulation, climate change AND congestion in one fell swoop...

*obviously bikers will have the choice of which models, Hollywood stars etc they get to have sex at, on, towards, or in the rare occasion with.
