How do you know what job is right for you?
Not a trick question, but a serious one .. I basically am at a point in my life where I fancy a career change.
Problem is I don’t have a clue what I would rather do .. How/what methods can I use to decide what I need to be looking at? |

Re: How do you know what job is right for you?
I am of the opinion that I'll never have a career. Which is okay as I don't need one. As long as the bills are paid and I can keep some bikes on the road I'll do almost any job.

Re: How do you know what job is right for you?
I'm trying to find one that:
* Let's me ride on sunny days. * Surrounds me with beautiful women * Pay's me a king's ransom * Asks nothing of me But to be serious, I'm with Hooligan Dan. Just want to pay the bills. |
Re: How do you know what job is right for you?
Maybe a very boring consideration, but pretty crucial, is how much money do you need to make?
I was in a very fortunate position when I was able to take voluntary redundancy and change the course of my career to a much less stressful route. If something crops up where I need some cash, I do a few months contract work to pay for it. Otherwise I do what I enjoy but which doesn't pay particularly well. Quality of life vs. standard of living. |

Out of interest Blue, what do you do now and why are you fed up with it? Might be a good place to start from coming up with ideas ...........

Sad to say Im at the point in me life where I just turn up, do the job and take the money, but what do you really want to do ? you must have some idea I would have thought, trouble is the older you get the more baggage you attain, what I mean is , some years ago I wanted to go into nursing as a psychiatrich nurse (spl?)but couldt afford to throw a well paid job in to train, whatever you do, dont leave it too late mate, good luck with it.

Re: How do you know what job is right for you?
I would love to move abroad and start up a resturant or cafe, work hard at it for a year or so then open up another one and eventualy get other people to run them for me.
Or something along these lines. My Girlfriend kind of wants the same but isnt a risk taker like myself. I would sell everything tomorrow to try it or something else completely risky but potentialy life changing. It would either work and we would have a great life....or it would fail and we would have to start again. My brain works in a way that no matter how hard it is to achieve I WOULDNT let it fail so theres no risk. Her brain tells her its 50/50 on whether she would end up with nothing all over again so doesnt want to take the chance. I do however know I'm not in the right job, right now. I get paid ok. I get a free car. I'm in charge of myself. I get alot of free time. I'm often home for 2pm starting at 9ish But I'm sooooo bored and it will never make me rich. Something needs to change but until i figure out the path to take its a waiting game. Edit - I know something, and thats is I need to work for myself. |
Re: How do you know what job is right for you?
Think you already have it sussed Blue
(from Dictionary.com) Career verb1. move headlong at high speed; "The cars careered down the road"; "The mob careered through the streets" |

Guys, no point suggesting careers, you don’t know enough about ‘me’ to do that …
I want to know what mechanism people have used to know what NEW career path to follow/move to .. Hopefully I can then use that proforma to do the same .. |

Don't get wrong I like what I do, but the amont of stress I am under right now, is massive which I am feeling. I almost feel as my life is hold while this is sorted out it feels very much like a make or break situation as so much is at stake. Well good luck, with what ever you do, but unless you take a risk you will never know. |
Re: How do you know what job is right for you?
I am not exactly happy in my current role - so I've taken the drastic step of doing something for myself for 5 months.
I say drastic...shouldnt' you be doing stuff for yourself all the time? When I get back I can see myself doing one of three scenarios: 1. Working in a job I don't like to buy things I don't need (i.e. MY current situation) 2. Working in a job I don't like but building up the funds for my next trip (The Silk route or similar) 3. Working for myself (some sort of creative writing career maybe) - but I may need to do loads of odd jobs here & there before I'm self-supporting. |

Think if theres something burning inside you that you want to do-go for it mate if you have the oppertunity now-as you've said people on here will only know the online blue but its you who will know the "real"you.i know someone who had the chance to do the same but decided to stick with the familiar path and was happy for a while, but a few years on told me that he regretted not taking"his chance" when he could-wife family etc meant that it was to late in his opinion to change, said he should have gone with his gut feeling but instead listened to his head.
Not helped you any I know but good luck if you take the chance-it takes Big Balls to do this. |

My colleague here has worked here 30 years today...
He'd been a bit down about it needless to say! |

Re: How do you know what job is right for you?
i think its a very difficult question. i dont think there's a specific thing or train of thought that you can do/act on and find out what you want to do. a few things i've thought of though:
responsibilites: do you have any?? (wife, children, mortgages, car payments, visas) which of these do you need to support (down size house? change to cheaper car?? can you sell off the family??) then you know what sort of income you will need to support the others round you. personal: do you have any thoughts on what sort of thing you'd like to do? move abroad? complete shift in job?? back to training/uni/learn something new?? then what would you be able to do to combine these?? i know currently i'm in a good job, but it doesnt excite me. i sit here on nice days wanting to be outsite, on my bike or snowboarding or something other than being in the office! i'm seriously considering once my training is over (my work send me to uni part time to study for a degree!) to move away and start something new. i'd love to travel a bit, serious consideration has been given to moving away to do a snow season (working in a chalet/lifts system or something) just making enough to get by but be able to do something i love everyday. then maye stay on and start doing what i'm qualified in or just start something new altogether! dont know if that has been of any help to you, but i've just realised how much i want to be finished here and consider a move abroad!!! |

Re: How do you know what job is right for you?
You're going to have to decide exactly what it is you do and don't want (yes, I know.......... )
I realised I didn't want to go to the same place every day, deal with the same people every day, get the same hassle every day, then when that project was finished it all started again with the next one, same thing just different part numbers. It was in engineering, but so little of it was "engineering" and so much was bureaucratic admin stuff. So I now go different places, work for different people on different jobs, have days off when I want. It's called self-employment. Now when I do engineering contracts I am no longer in a managerial position and don't get the grief of project management. I do go to the same place at the same time with the same people, but it's probably only for 3months so it's easy to cope with. Then I have a holiday!!! :D |
Re: How do you know what job is right for you?
I have thought about it long a hard and being just shy of 27 years old (yes I know I look old F off :D) I can only describe my way of thinking.
Assume that tomorrow you could start from scratch, what would you choose to do? Personally, I would choose to become a motorcycle engineer/designer. Do a proper uni course and preferably work in a racing team. So for me the key question is out of 100% of your day to day life how much do you want to spend in this job??? If it's the combined product of a job and a hobby then I would like to spend ALL of my time on it :) Hope it helps:) |
Re: How do you know what job is right for you?
I do fancy being my own boss ... and perhaps doing something on bikes, perhaps racing ...
This would suit me as I could get involved at all levels as I grow the business - but I just don't see the market ... http://www.daltonsbusiness.com/busin...4-1371-120074/ I might do some more research mind as if it is all export, there might be a larger market than I envisage ... All I need now is a snappy business name … Blue_Diesel  |
Re: How do you know what job is right for you?
personally I wouldn't go for it:) but if you wanna get involved in bike related business there are a few things that are missing from the UK market
just think of what you are doing yourself and why other people are not doing it. if it's because they don't know how to do it then that is a gap that needs filling ;) best of luck again |

Re: How do you know what job is right for you?
I have been placed into a totally different role to the one I was in only 3 weeks ago, yet still working for the same establishment. This one has none of the stresses of the last one, is 7.30-3.30 mon-fri and it situated in a fairly lofty position overlooking a pretty good view. Its a move which has happened purely by accident, however at this very moment in time i kinda dont miss the old role, which is questioning my longer term commitment. Make sense?

Re: How do you know what job is right for you?
I totally admire you for asking but without wanting to reveal yourself.
But I can also see DanDare's point that if we don't know we can't suggest, So as a system All I can think of is what Fizz has said. Because surely you know what you want to do - you just have to research if it's feasible. Diesel Bike - I would love a good one. Diesel cars have taken off to now be preferable to petrol (certain cars & certain people even setting aside the economics of diesel) & diesel boats sound better than petrol. I would also love an LPG bike - can you build me one please Blue? |

Re: How do you know what job is right for you?
Blue - with respect you need something where you can call the shots as you don't seem to like being out of control. So you need to be your own boss.
You don't stand fools gladly, so you need something where you don't have to. You don't seem to get on with women, they let you down all the time, so a role with no female input is required. You have a view on every subject under the sun, and you're always right, so no need for any input in fact. There. I've given you the mechanism. All you need to do is find the right role that ticks all the above:cool: |

Anyway, I have actually come to a decision and put in for redundancy .. I am not actually in line for it, but I can still apply. I now hope I get taken up on it .. in fact, I’ll be gutted if I don’t!! I have done the sums and with my investments and taking out some of the expenditure, I can effectively retire now .. like embee, I can whistle for tip-bits every now and then if I fancy a treat 8) .. for example, one thing I thought of is hiring out video gear at trackdays .. I got the know-how and even a couple of sets of equipment. I can get more at minimal outlay too .. I am going to ring some TD companies later and see how much of a cut they take etc. I won’t be a rich man, but I can do whatever I choose, from travelling the world working in bars, to starting my own business. It is also fully revertible if I decide it isn’t for me, I can get a ‘normal’ job say 1yr down the line 8) You are spot on with wanting to be my own boss, I really like the idea of being self employed/starting my own business!! 8) |
Re: How do you know what job is right for you?
In case you didn't know, there was a exactly that at the FE trackday at Brands Sorry can't remember the name of the video provider (but could find out if important)
Think prices were £20 per camera per session, £35 for 2 cameras per session or £40 for one camera all morn or afternoon. People seemed to think that was good vfm compared with £30 for a CD of your photos. I guess you could offer the added service of filming people on their bike instead of mounting a camera on their bike. |
