2000 sv650s redline
Having just bought another sv650s after some t****r of a white van driver wrote my last one off I have noticed some worrying(to me) differences.
Its a 2000 s model with 23500 on the clock. After riding it for a day or so Ive noticed that at about 25-30mph in 2nd+3rd there is a definate whine. This changes in pitch on acceleration and in different gears. Checked chain, replaced oil etc. Took it to a garage to have a quick look who said don't worry 'see if it gets any worse.' Its running a full stainless akrapovic exhaust and has been dyno jetted. Lastly to add to my worries a mate said he'd listen said don't worry and then decided to do a stationary burnout. Cheers!! He had the bike at 10+ thous revs for sbout 20 secs. Could this have done any damage and is there a limiter on the early models. I am a worryer |
Re: 2000 sv650s redline
:smt043 your mate sounds cool.
no your bike is fine, without being mean... some who spends theyre life looking at bikes knows more about it than you ;) |
Re: 2000 sv650s redline
Cool. I can think of a few other words for him. So yathink all sounds ok. I know bikes rev high but had visions of things going bang
|
Re: 2000 sv650s redline
I'm pretty sure they have a rev limiter. As for the whining I'm pretty sure the most common place to check is the clutch. I'm also pretty sure there will be someone with a better opinion will be along shortly to give you some proper advice.
My yellow one started whining a few months back, somewhere around 3000 revs, in nuetral, in all gears that had varying pitches. Its had a strip down and rebuild, because it had been sat around and ridden on short journeys, some believed there may have been a sticky ring. we flushed the engine, but its still being rebuilt so I can't tell you if it was rectified. You say its a new bike to you, do you know any of its history? |
Re: 2000 sv650s redline
Some history. Chain and sprockets last done 6k ago. regular oil and filter changes. Cam chains and tensioners also replaced not long ago. All in all its been fairly well looked after. Just this wierd noise. Can't remember my old 1 doing it. What makes it wierder is can only hear on bike. Had not been reidden for 12 months so thought it would go with a few miles but no.

Re: 2000 sv650s redline
FWIW Curvey SVs have a rev limiter.
|
Re: 2000 sv650s redline
The bike will be fine after your mate's antics. Chain tension and lubrication are the main reasons I've found for a whine when moving. Specifically too tight or not enough lube. Check the tension is the same all round the chain and that with the bike on a Padock / side stand there's enough free play (30-35mm IIRC). An Abba / NWS stand will give a different reading as the swingarm will be lower not having any weight on it.

Re: 2000 sv650s redline
Is it the exhaust note that is different or mechanical sound?
If it is simply an exhaust note change, the SVs have a ignition retard in 2nd and 3rd gears, could it be this? Oh and did you stand there and watch your mate do that?!!? ... I'd have been well peeved!! That is exactly the sort of reason why I don't have/want any mates!! :D |
Re: 2000 sv650s redline
I've hit the Rev limiter more then a few times, it makes a few lovely bags to let you know your there.
|
Re: 2000 sv650s redline
whole chains been gone over and no tight spot. 30mm play and certainly enough lube. Just been out on it and held 30mph in 3rd. Pulled clutch in and noise went. Let out, noise returned.
As for standing there watching could just about see him through the smoke. KARMA is a funny thing. what goes around comes around. what was that about 2nd and 3rd |
Re: 2000 sv650s redline
Could be that your front sprocket is loose or over worn.
|
Re: 2000 sv650s redline
may need an adjustment on the clutch cable maybe or a new one. If its going when you pull it in it sounds familiar to mine?
and what Grinch said. I seem to remember a certain YorkieChris psyching himself up to have a good wrench on the front sprocket nut, only to fall on his ass because it were loose and was near to falling oof |
Re: 2000 sv650s redline
I have just been out and removed the sprocket cover. the sprocket is not worn at all. I have however noticed that it as solid metal. no rubber on it that i could see. could this be the noise. Have adjusted and checked clutch cable

Re: 2000 sv650s redline
Does have a rev limiter, can be hit in first gear very easily! Don't tend to hit it much though because after about 9500 revs it just seems to vibrate more and not actually go much faster! :bounce: Better to just change up.

Re: 2000 sv650s redline
Sounds ok to me too, all SV's have a rev limiter so don't worry about that either (cuts spark to one cylinder). Just get out and enjoy it....

Rev limiter makes a right bang and shoots flames out of the can |
Re: 2000 sv650s redline
Redline's at 10'500rpm and the rev limiter cuts in at 11'200rpm. I know, mine's bounced off it quite a few times (usually when I go for an overtake and the bike's already revving hard - give the car driver a wakeup call).

Re: 2000 sv650s redline
Well another few hours spent tinkering with the bike in the hope that would cure the whine. Quite obviously not. Its off to a mates workshop tomorrow to work in the dry and under the watchful eye of some1 far more experienced than myself. I'll keep posted whats found, if anything.

Re: 2000 sv650s redline
I have got a 20002 curvey that has exactly the same symptoms you describe, and previously I had a 99 one which didn't make the same noise. My 02 bike has only got 11000 on the clock as well!
I've recently changed my zorst and it made no difference, also changed the oil and checked the cam chain tensioners and the chain tension/lube is fine. I'm wondering if it could be induction noise? It sounds to me like it's from the front end. |
Re: 2000 sv650s redline
My previous one was also a 99 model. My new one also has the lower fairing as well so wondering if that makes a difference.
|
Re: 2000 sv650s redline
Just to point out, because the noise goes away when you pull the clutch in does not make the clutch a major suspect. This has removed the load off your transmission, and engine.
What do you use as chain lube? A nice large measure of heavy engine oil as a chain lube make a difference? |
Re: 2000 sv650s redline
its a Holts universal chain lube. says is compatable with o-ring seals.
|
Re: 2000 sv650s redline
Through the course of today many things have been tried. The sprockets are tight. The chain has been tightened and loosened. All make no difference what so ever. The sound definately seems to originate from down by my left boot. Its all very strange!

Re: 2000 sv650s redline
Hi to all,
I just started this thread last days. http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=106563 We could merge them together. It seems the same problem. Did you find any solution/reason? Regards, Andy |
Re: 2000 sv650s redline
ok, i posted on here on the first page. Suzy is now running and on initial ride the noise seems to have gone.
She was only used for shorts journeys last year, very rarely ridden in fact. Both of these threads sound similar to my problem. Now then, I'm holding my breath that it has been cured, but this is what we did to resolve it. Firstly bough some engine flush, you put it in the oil, and run it for about 15 mins at idle, the instructions for use are on the bottle as i'm not the one who dis it. Then you dump the oil and leave it to drain completely over night. Put new oil and filter on. We also put an new clutch cable on because it was fubarred and a new chain because that was also fubarred Its also worth pointing out that my friend who is a motorcyle mechanic said a lady went to him with a bandit that wouldn't go in gear properly, he flushed her engine( as she had a couple of other probs) and it cured the lot. its inexpensive and if you follow the instructions could help |

I have somehow the feeling that the wind can cause the sound... but has something to do with the clutch and acceleration. If I pull the clutch the noise goes away, if I don't accelerate the same.... In the first gear no sound... starts around 35 - 40 kmh. |

Well... actually cand give it a try as you said. This might mean that the sound is coming from "inside"?? |

Re: 2000 sv650s redline
Thanks for the tips(and other are welcomed). I'll look around carefully and write back asap(don't know if untill the weekend I can make it).
|
Re: 2000 sv650s redline
well having a general scout round for crud will improve things i suspect, although it may not stop the whining. When was the last time it had an oil change and filter BTW?
edit... looked at your thread, you've done that already..doh. Whilst your looking ubder the cover, you may want to look at the front sprocket nut, to see if its worked its way loose. Sometimes this can cause a bit of a prob |
Re: 2000 sv650s redline
Yeah checked that. Think its gonna be a case of live with it or spend a fortune to give it to a garage. Did you find out what was wrong with yours
|
Re: 2000 sv650s redline
Annoyingly i changed the oil and filter when got the bike. so you recommend an engine flush. showing my complete ignorance what does that do.
|
Re: 2000 sv650s redline
well, this was supposed to have cured my problem.....we thought it had....................................but its back.......grrrrrrrrrr
|
Re: 2000 sv650s redline
That's really annoying. Didn't spot anything in the cam covers, so I'm not sure, time for further investigation if it gets louder IMO
|
Re: 2000 sv650s redline
you notice it more when your in traffic, using the clutch more,
I had a listen down the screwdriver today, but all I heard was a load of whirring noise, but now I know what an engine sounds like inside |
Re: 2000 sv650s redline
so has it returned the same or is there any improvement. Nightmare. do you still get it on idle tickover.
|
Re: 2000 sv650s redline
yeah, alls fine, shes a bit rough cause she really needs her carbs balancing, had to twiddle a bit with the idle screw other day, but thats all.
Apart from this bloody whining she pulls like a train, shes always whistled like a canary anyway, but this is louder than usual. Still creeping a bit on the clutch as well. I've heard that much of it now I don't knowe if it does it in neutral, pretty sure it does, its more noticeable on slow cutch control through traffic TBH |
Re: 2000 sv650s redline
mine certainly doesn't whistle. 30mph in 3rd kinda sounds like wat i imagine an invalid scooter to sound like if it could go that fast
|
Re: 2000 sv650s redline
Whining noise? Probably just the gear box and everything. I have a whiny noise, which i know is the gear box. SV's make some funny noises, all of which scare everyone - but when its still there after a year of riding and the bike hasnt gone bang, you know its normal :D
