WTF I Cant bloody believe it!
 

Well in in the RAF atm. Ive not been happy for a while and put my notice in to leave yesterday. I have to give 12 months notice... tsh. This morning I get an order through saying that im going to the Falklands for a lovely 4 month detachment in 15 months...

As you can probably guess im not feeling too great about that as it will make getting a job lined up a great deal harder. Ive asked about if I will have to do it and so far they think yes but they are looking into it.

SO any advice on this from people in the know as to if I have to do it. I honestly think these two goings on are linked... A way to keep me in the RAF by making it as hard as possible to get out. I know they have recruiting and retention issues, unsuprising. :rolleyes:

Let me get this right, yesterday you handed in your 12 month notice.

Today, you find that in 15 months, you're supposed to be serving 4 months in the Falklands?

Surely your notice period is up before you fly off to the Falklands...:confused: Or does the RAF not work like a normal employer?

No... (reason I want out) its one BIG **** about tbh. I suspect what they will do is now make sure that I go down there within the 12 months ive got left. Issue with that obviously is being away I wont really be able to look for a job. So Ill get back get the boot out and be unemployed. Brilliant. :rolleyes:

Its not the first time I have heard of people trying to leave being given falklands duty.....must be some kind of punishment in the forces being sent there....I would love it lol

Just tell them in 15 months you wont be there so your not going. end of. If your boss gives you grief tell the org and we'l sort him out!!

I bought meself out after 10 yrs, when I went up to gen office to drop my completed application form off, otherwise known as a gen app, I was told I would 'going south' before I knew it, however as were already living in field conditions anyway they let me off, so I never went, didnt realise they were still pulling that stunt, ah happy days ;)

If you have been given a 15 month warning order of your posting, and you have given your 12 month notice already, assuming they have not declined your notice* you have nothing to worry about. Just keep quite and do your year and say adiós amigo at the end of it.

I handed my notice whilst serving my second term in Bosnia. Back to back 6 month tours. Was not a happy soldier. I had eight months left to do when they told me I was being sent at short notice for another 6 month tour. I wrangled my way out of that as I was a tank driving instructor and convinced them it would be more beneficial to be back at camp doing driver training.

I also was of the understanding, your last 6 months service was to be spent in the UK to allow for resettlement in preperation for civvy street. Something else that I quoted as a reason not to deploy.

*Yes it can be declined, twice. Effectively meaning you have to wait two years before your out. (At least that was the rule when I served)

I dont think they are allowed by law to be honest... See if someone can correct me. Although they are special in many ways the forces they arnt imune to the law. :rolleyes:

Think thats about right across all 3 services but they do screw up at times :( Tis funny when coming to end of service (getting retired) they placed me where I wanted to be and then submitted another draft order for the day after I was due out, back to sunny Falklands :rolleyes: Oh how I laughed as I agreed to the draft, signed it and sent it back :D

No, I left on time :) Guess who ever I was supposed to relieve got relieved eventually :smt102

my friend was in the navy and had to give 18 months notice. he took them to the court of human rights and won. they said it was a breach of his human rights making him work for a company he did not want to. i think he got out after 2 months.

Just fail a medical or IRT or something similar. I can't see them sending you if you repeatedly fail your weapon training etc. OK may be a bit of a black mark for you but it depends on how badly you want to avoid the tour.
What trade are you?? There are shed loads of ways to get out of going to MPA. Although, I have to say that I really enjoyed my two tours there in 87 and 88.

The Air Force **** on me just before I came out.
I was due to leave in May 94 but had a little bit of a fight in March 94 whilst on terminal leave. Had a bit of a one way chat with P1 who cancelled all my leave etc pending court martial.
It was the following January by the time I got court martialled so they kept me in for an extra 8+ months.
They certianly have a funny way of doing things.........:smt009

Last time i checked i thought they could keep you in for up to 3 years after you PVR'd?

Mate they will have you doing all the sh*t duties, guard, detachments, SWO's bi*ch etc. etc.

You arent alone matey, we have a bit of a problem with PVR'ing at our place. :rolleyes:

There are so many people banging ooot.

However there are a few loopholes. If you can start hunting for a job and find one which wants to take you on straight away, you can stick in a gen-app and apply to leave earlier than your 12 month point. It can be refused but it is an option.

Also if your JPA notification went through and was approved before your DWR notification came up, I would'nt worry about it too much. If that isnt the case have you thought about trying to swap with someone on an earlier DWR. Not ideal but atleast its 4 months of your 12 doing relatively flip all and you can save a bit of money.

Mate, the one thing's got nothing to do with the other! I know it's hard to believe but the RAF plans its life a bit more than 12 months in advance so your deployment will have been in the pipeline long before you rapped your tits in. It's coincidence is what it is.

So, keep your teeth clean, do all the resettlement courses you can, enjoy your terminal leave and get one of your oppos to send you a postcard in 15 months time. :D

(Oh, but don't take the Org's word for it, talk to one of them officer types. Unless you are one of course, in which case God help us all!)

I have 3 mates in at present and all 3 of them are thinking of leaving the RAF in the next year or so. Only one of them has postponed this as he's currently out in Vegas living it up. One is due out at the end of the year.

JPA the best screw up computer system known to man!!!!

If you end up going to the Falklands just remember that you can't do any resettlement when you are there (i think)

When are you supposed to be going down south?

If you go I'll probably see you there - reserve Sept 08 LTA Jan 09.

IT/communicatins... what i wanted to do when i joined the RAF... But most of the jobs (that I want to do) have gone Civvy so I dont want to be in anymore... Thats the main reason anyway.

Might have a look into BT or that sort of thing, maybe network installation type jobs.

Well its been cancelled now since I put my PVR in before the order.

Well at the moment I work in a comcen stamping paper. Greatest job in the world... ](*,)

WSO should be good for you, you get good pay Sgt + flying pay and if you like the desert and the middle east you'll be fine. :cool:

Stamping pieces of paper... signals. Thats pretty much it. Not a hard job but with minus job satisfaction. Its soooo depressing finishing at 8pm and not being able to do anything because everything is closed and the nearest drinking hole is a good 25 mins drive... :rolleyes:
