Recommend me a bike
I am 18 years old. No NCB
Have had 1 accident, write off - £3800 payout (on my SV) Need to get a bike and basically was looking for recommendations. to give you a quick idea on insurance - I was paying £1000/year fully comp on the brand new SV. They now want £1800 after my accident for fully comp so I'm thinking older bike and just take TPFT. which means... Something like an IL4 (one of the older ones) could be a good bet as I've been quoted £1600 fully comp on a gsxr600 (99 model) so TPFT should be closer to £1k what I was paying before. I'm not really a fan of most nakeds, the speed triple is hot but what can I do aye. Any ideas? I know I'm going to be paying a lot first few years, especially after a fault accident. I'm not overly bothered about speed (provided it moves) Maybe a 400? cheers for any advice, Dave |
Re: Recommend me a bike
I reckon look at one of the 400s, paying that sort of money for insurance will make you cry in a few years when you realise you could have got a brand new bike for what you've paid.
The 400s will handle pretty nicely, main difference being straight line speed, but then do you really care about that? |
Re: Recommend me a bike
anything with a "R" in the title will be expensive
try a quote for a curvy worth £1200 TP only or THFH ? or bandit, CB500 |
Re: Recommend me a bike
vfr400. some fo those go just as well as the sv, and pretty cheap as their age. its easier to find a naked bike cheaper than a fully loaded faired bike.

Re: Recommend me a bike
Just get another SV and insure it TPFT.
If your 18, i assume you have it restricted? I:4s can be a bit weak restricted compared to twins Matt |
Re: Recommend me a bike
Have a go on an older Fazer 600 if you fancy a change. They come half faired like the SV and aren't too bad restricted either.

Re: Recommend me a bike
Looked at a VFR400 on biketrader - was really nice £800 so pretty cheap too. Checked out insurance TPFT - £4600 :o
Not sure if that is bennetts being bennets (as i find its easy to do an online quote there) or if there's a reason behind it? Trouble is im out of the country in a week so i'm not actually going to be able to buy anything till the end of the month. |
Re: Recommend me a bike
Obviously a VFR 400! :D V power! :D

Re: Recommend me a bike
What you get depends on the depth of your pocket.
If I were you I'd be more than happy with a CB500/ER5/GS500 for a year or two, they move, and on a 33bhp license there's really no point in insuring anything more potent is there? |

Re: Recommend me a bike
dont bother using bennets untill you are 21/22. they were allways really expencive for me untill i turned 22 then they were one of the cheapist!!!! carol nash i found to be the best then i was 18. i knew someone who had a vfr, with yoshi pipes i think, sounds really nice. and it didnt cost him too much on insurance either.

Re: Recommend me a bike
What Hovis said.Get an old curvy cheap and insure it TPFT.Keep it for two or three years to build up NCD and riding history then buy a sportier bike when you can insure it for sensible money.

Re: Recommend me a bike
The gsxr was 10 years old the sv was brand new. Go figure.
The curvys are actually growing on me. The dark blue ones are pretty nice. Just need to magic some money now, shouldn't take long after being back from holidaiy. |
Re: Recommend me a bike
Try express, they're great every time.

Re: Recommend me a bike
the 1800 quote on an SV was with express, they were my current insurers
