Quick shout out to all o you lovely folks who told me it was easy, you know who you are, especially as one of you is my internet boyfriend! Hugs Jayne :salut:  :salut: |

I re-installed a server yesterday morning before breakfast - took 30 mins (would have taken less if I hadn't forgotten to re-enable the DHCP server on another machine 1st) But good on ya :) |

Yes, I built her and I put her in her case and i gave her lots of fans so I know thst she is cool. I named all of my computers on my home network. My first was called Daphne, then came Betty and now Hillary. However since then I have moved and had to plug into Carols Network, which consists of Mac (bet you can't guess what make he is?) and Moya. You didn't name your computer? :p |

My Linux Workstation is Iron, the server I rebuilt yesterday is Sodium, My Routers are Hydrogen and Carbon etc. As you can see, my naming structure is based on the Periodic table with Element types grouping to device types :) Used to have a whole network named after synonyms for Black - in fact my mail server that is due to be retired (hence the rebuild of Sodium) is still called Ebon (should be called Lithium :D) |

Cool, I knew I was not being that much of a nerd by naming them. Although I did prefer the route of nice names for old ladies. That way I can spend hours bashing away at my old lady! Yes I know it is a very poor joke... i will get my coat! :smt023 |
Re: I made Linux work
Oh pooh... Now I made Linux not work.
Tried to open Youtub and it failed me! Said I need to install a flash player... Not so clever now am I? Off to do some research and find out what I need to do... |
Re: I made Linux work
Got a confession - I name mine too!
Main PC tower is "Red Dwarf" (with red cathodes), Laptop is "Blue-Midget", entertainment center is "Starbug" (and yes, it does have green electro-flourescent wire running around), and NAS is "White Hole". Still trying to work out what to call the firewall - was thinking Gelf... Incidentally, all Linux boxes :-D What distro are you using? |
Re: I made Linux work

Alternatively, if using Ubuntu, open up Synaptic (System->Administration->Synaptic) then click on search, the type in flashplayer and select the 2 options you are given, then apply :) |
Re: I made Linux work
using Ubuntu because I have experienced it before, but not as good as this version. I likes it lots and lots. Nearly more than sweets.

Re: I made Linux work
Been trying to get Linux working for years, each release it gets a little bit better. Haven't tried for a while, maybe it's time again.
(My laptop is called Hex and our desktop is called Hal btw) |

OK, chose the down loads I want. Will it just down load them when I restart or something, I don't seem to have an apply button! Oh yes I do... ;-) |
Re: I made Linux work
We named our servers, Agincourt, Waterloo, Nile, Trafalgar. Unfortunately our French lords and masters spotted a trend and made us comply with a naming policy
|
Re: I made Linux work
Nice one Janey!
Have you got the cube working yet? Awesome! I like the burning windows too.. and the wobbly windows.... and the....... NERD ALERT!! Steve PS who's your internet boyfriend? |

Re: I made Linux work
OK folks, I nearly have it, but now my DVD player does not work and I do not know how to make it play. Do you lovely people have any ideas.
I originally put this computer together purely as an entertainment system, so I would like to be able to play music and watch movies on it again. I feel a bit mean to keep on badgering the same folks, but you have been very god so far. :salut: |

Edit: Forget my question, go here: How to get DVDs to work with ubuntu |
Re: I made Linux work
ubuntuforums.org - The guys there are brilliant, many are UK based and there are hundreds of tutorials and how-to's
The Terminal - if you can get used to it, it'll be your best friend, e.g. instead of going into add/remove programs to install Firefox, you can go into the terminal and do: 'sudo apt-get install firefox' This will automatically install the latest version of the software you want and handle any dependencies. If you want an entertainment PC then Mythbuntu might be a good bet (you can install the MythTV compnents on top of Ubuntu). My computer's names are poor: Dave_Desktop - Ubuntu eeepc_Dave - Xandros Mary_Laptop - Win XP Sarah_Laptop - Win XP paving_slab (thats actually a nickname) - Win 98 (work) |

Re: I made Linux work
This is now confusing me, I have downloaded the suitable DVD players and have put a DVD in the drive, but when it starts to play it stops before it gets to the menu. Any idea why it would do that?
Do I lack codecs or is there something else going on? Any idea how I can fix this this... I was really enjoying playing with Linux too... |
Re: I made Linux work
Mine got called Hector due to initial difficuties getting it to start...
"Hector - don't just stand there - DO something" (Now due for retirement) Only Office computer that got named was "Son of Satan" due to the inevitablilty of it destroying removable drives every so often when you switched it on. This failing led to it becoming the TV recording/ whatching computer until the CPU died. (not one of our successes then) and yes I am bored at work... |
Re: I made Linux work
So what made you decide to get linux? And what are the advantages of it over windows?
|

Linux lets you play and make the machine yours. Also being open source software, you get to try it and use it and adapt it and then send it back if you do something cool with it. It is developed by users as opposed to a big corporate giant who want your money. I guess it is the anarchist in me that wants to go open source. Also less virus! :smt031 |
Re: I made Linux work
Two or three things for me:
1. I'm so fed up of Windows crashing and you not being able to do anything about it. With Linux, if you're prepared to get your hands dirty, you can fix things yourself/help the OSS dev's especially if you: 2. Compile the kernel and all its packages from source - massochistic? yes, time consuming? Very, frustrating? Don't go there - you can create fantastic new swear words but finally, rewarding? Absolutely. When you finish and your system is humming along taking a fraction of the time to do things when compared the windows xp bloatware... 3. Window managers, consoles *and* mutli desktops :-) I suppose I'm biased, given that I'm a developer by trade and a geek by nature... |

Someone's been playing with Emerald?

Re: I made Linux work
I made it work, or rather my friend Nigel made it work. He came in , sat down and downloaded the codecs and gave me the page of instructions on how to set it up. Thanks Nigel, you are a legend.

Re: I made Linux work
After reading this thread I have D/L Ubuntu & am running it now :)
I tried Mandriva while I was off (The full 4 gb) & made a complete mess of my p.c, having to reformat it, but this is brilliant, I'm well impressed. I'm going to try it for another few days & have a play, if it works well, then BYE BYE Mr Gates :) Cheers Jayney for starting this thread. |
Re: I made Linux work
There is only one thing I HATE about Linux ... all that mounting an mounting of USB devices, CD's etc!! .. that is so plops!! :rambo:

Remind me never to annoy Soulkiss, he will hack my system and download nasty things to my screen saver! I think Ubuntu is very pleasing on the eye, soft colours and pretty effects. Windows always looks so clinical and complex. Yes it does work, but it lacks the aesthetic beauty of Linux and sometimes, it can be a real git when it goes wrong. At least with Linux you stand a chance of fixing a problem. Anyway y'all, enjoy Linux and may all of your PC problems be simple ones. Hugs, Jayne xXx :D |

Re: I made Linux work
I've used PCLinuxOS for 3 years now (after trying just about every distro on the market) and it does everything that Windoze does, right out the box. I even run XP in VMWare on it so I can continue to use Premier Pro for video editing.
The online PCLinusOS community is by far the most user freindly bunch I've encountered in the IT sector. They seem to have a real passion for the OS that's a whole Polar Region away from the stuffy and elitist groups found on a lot of the other Linux sites. PCLOS FTW!! |

Re: I made Linux work
Yeah! My old museum piece P233 laptop quite happily runs Zenwalk with 128mb RAM and a 6G HD.
