red light jumping cyclist....
Got his just deserts this morning, just wish i had a helmet cam to capture the action cos it was a beauty.
Picture the scene, me and a bunch of other bikes and scooters are sitting at the fornt of the traffic at the lights. Its a crossroads and the lights for the traffic going across us change but one cyclist thinks he'll be quick enough... forgetting that bikes at lights love their traffic light GP starts. the biggest ugliest Harley was what he saw as we shot across on our green light and he hit his front broake so hard that not only did he go over the top of his handlebras but his bicycle flew right over our heads!!!! Oh how i wish more of them got that sort of thing for jumping red lights. I mean he came to very minor harm, a few cuts on his hands and knees and i'd hate it if he'd got badly hurt but it made all the others on bikes behind him stop and think  |
Re: red light jumping cyclist....
Excuse me while I say... Good.

Re: red light jumping cyclist....
I actually saw a policeman on the street on Saturday, I was shocked, but not so shocked as to be speechless.
I see a number of cyclists running the red-lights at the junction he was standing at, and although none run the reds while I was there, I asked if there were plans to do something about this issue. Answer was no, its not a high priority. He then went on to go on about how its usually cyclists complaining about aggressive motorists, and that they do it because its safer WTF !!! I was basically reporting an on-going crime and he wasn't interested. What was it Ice-T used to say again about the police? |
Re: red light jumping cyclist....
Freedom of speech, thats some mo-fo bull5h1t
you say the wrong thing, they lock your ass up quick. Oh wait that wasn't about cops. Which are you refering to SK? And cops are never interested unless they can arrest someone and get their DNA on the database  |
Re: red light jumping cyclist....
How is running a red light safer?

Besides, jumping a red light is 3 points on your licence, try and get someone to produce for riding a bike............ They don't have to 'cos they don't need one.................. therefore no offence. |
Re: red light jumping cyclist....
Not even a fine then?
|
Re: red light jumping cyclist....
I thought jumping a red on a bike was an offense, just not an endorsable one?Im not a copper so correct me if Im wrong.

Its not a view I subscribe to and like you guys even though I'm a cyclist, anybody that jumps a red light gets all they deserve. |

However I am led to believe that if the cyclist is also a motorist/biker, they CAN get 3 points on their license - and surely all that is needed then is a quick check with the DVLA to see if Mr Smith of 123 Anystreet has a licence....... Oh and Spidey, it was from Ice-T's time in Body Count, last 2 words in the 3 word quote are "the police" - go work the 1st word out :) |
Re: red light jumping cyclist....
If they argue that, then it could be argued at any junction.

Now if car thieves can have endorsements on their non-existent licences say for a car chase with the cops, why not a cyclist? The copper in question could have stepped off the pavement and stopped a cyclist, given him a fixed penalty there and then surely? No license and they go to court to be dealt with? Given that a high proportion of cyclists will also have a driving license, I'm sure they would soon get the message that the rules of the road apply to ALL vehicles. EDIT: Soulkiss has beat me to it. |

The Police are great.
That is all. |
Re: red light jumping cyclist....
I hit a cyclist in this manner in February... silly *******.

Re: red light jumping cyclist....
It is definitely against the law to run a red on a bicycle! In Oxford the police had a crack down at one set of traffic lights. They gave out 92 fines in 1.5 hours, and had to stop cos they had run out of tickets.

Hey boys, Jayne here to tell you a little tale. Back in 1995 I was pulled twice for traffic offences, both times for jumping things. The first time I was pulled for jumping a pond on my BMX. I was cautioned and told that I could expect either a fine or a court appearance. I got neither because jumping your BMX in a park is surprisingly less illegal than mugging old ladies. The next time I was pulled by the Filth, I was out on my bike and stopped for jumping a red light. I pulled away before the light turned to orange and had a cop car behind me. I was not fined, but was cautioned again. My reason for pulling away before the lights changed was this. Male car drivers in their early twenties see young cyclists as a target, it was not uncommon for me to have ash trays emptied in my face, to be sprayed with a washer nozzle and to have cars try to run me over. You know how it is, a chav pulls up at the lights and tries to race you when you are on your motorbike, when on your pushbike they try to knock you off! The Police took my reason and told me that next time I should be more observant of who is in the white ford escorts that pull up behind me. So to all of you cyclist hating types, :smt019 I think they should bring in public flogging for people who are caught speeding and the death penalty should be used for people who park on both double yellow lines and pavements. Also while we are at it, can we find the idiot who thought it would be safe to paint a slippery strip down the side of the road (that holds the most oil, rubbish and flooding!) and tell cyclists to ride on it. Near my parents there is a roundabout that has a cycle route all the way around it, which puts cyclists in the way of trucks turning into the industrial estate, cars coming off of the slip way and cuts off the bus stop. The Road planner who thought this one should be put against a wall and shot with all of the snot, hoiked up on a cold winter ride! :pukel::puker: |
Re: red light jumping cyclist....
I still hate cyclists.
Jk. But from what I've seen, the majority of them shouldn't be on the roads. Now before anyone jumps in about how I'm wrong, read the above sentence properly. Okay? Understand it now? Good. |

Re: red light jumping cyclist....
Good.
I hate cyclists who dont obey the rules of the road. If they use it, they should stick to the damn rules. Sorry to those of you who do cycle, cyclists who abuse the road and treat it like a playground irritate me Maria |
Re: red light jumping cyclist....
so your saying they should pay road tax as well?

I like cyclists, mobile chicanes the lot of them :)
I watched at lesaet 2 cyclists get nabbed for jumping the lights at the Moorgate/london wall junction the other day :) Proper police pushbikes with flashing lights and sirens and everfing, dead cool. |
Re: red light jumping cyclist....
Sweet, it does happen then.
|
Re: red light jumping cyclist....
I HATE cyclists!
if you aint paying road tax you shouldn't be on the road! i also think there should be some form of test / licence that points could be put on and that they should all have to have insurance! |

Equally in those days there were hardly any bike shops and if i wanted a set of mirrors (which i did) i had to send off mail order to america. yes this was even before the internet existed. Point i'm making is that i have nothing against any road user regalrdless of there choice of transport, hell i even used to be a white van man for a while so i know that stereotyping is a silly thing to do. But if you use the roads then use them well and safely for all.... or prepare for Karma to come bite you in the ass like it did to this guy. I womder how many lights he'd chanced that day before that....and just how many he chanced on his way home? but i still wish i'd had a helmet cam as it was truly You've Been Framed stuff the way he flew over the bars  |
Re: red light jumping cyclist....
Despite my earlier attempts to be a wind up merchant, I can assure you that I am very careful on the road.
But you see, I qualified as a mountain bike leader in 2002. I spent my first few years after uni teaching outdoor education, so I did the whole climbing, walking, biking, boaty stuff for several years. I for one do stop at the line for traffic lights, I usually go just over it, so drivers of large vehicles can see me though if they are there, I do not jump red lights unless I have a serious reason to do so, eg escaping from a T1t in a car who wants to squish me. I have been cycling on the roads since 1990 and the only time I was hit was when a Caravan pulling driver crushed me between the curb and his caravan. I was furious because I could have been very badly hurt, but the guy was a P***k who even failed to stop when I came off my bike due to being hit by his caravan. I wish I had got his number plate or smashed one of his windows. I understand that Switzerland has a plate system for cyclists and they have to pay road tax. If it gave us safe and reliable cycle ways that do not get covered with filth, oil or rubbish and did not turn into Parking lanes for gits in cars with those park anywhere lights, I would gladly pay it. Instead I pay money to Sus Trans, the national Cycle network builders. http://www.sustrans.org.uk/ Anyway, happy cycling Orgers! Loves ya really. :D |
Re: red light jumping cyclist....
Well, as someone who regularly cycles and rides a motorbike I have to say that I have occasionally run a red light on my pushbike. I treat them as give way signs a lot, as I don't have a big engine to get me moving again. Momentum is important! I do pick my moments tho, and wait for it to be safe before doing so.
Then again, I have also been known to break a speed limit or two in my time, and I know damn well some of those vociferously demanding that all cyclists who break the rules be punished for it have also. How would you feel if the general response to Crashy McGee time was "You were 5 miles over the limit? deserve everything you get!" I'm not saying that cyclists should be immune from the laws that we all (sometimes, when there's a police car behind us) follow, but theres a certain phrase about glass houses that applies here... |
Re: red light jumping cyclist....
Like Bear, I'm a motorcyclist, and a cyclist. Indeed, I covered well over 1500 miles in London over the past year.
I don't condone jumping red lights... it's not good publicity for anyone, and as has been advertised on the back of buses in the capital for a while "jumping red lights kills". However... I do admit to "pushing a red light". As a motorcyclist in London, I've been trained and tested in how to operate a bike in traffic - and I've got a fair amount of experience at it in London. All this is transferable to a bicycle too. Too often have I been sat for minutes at a red light, while everyone else sits at a red light, and pedestrians take no notice of crossing points and red/green men anyway. Given an appropriate awareness, I harm no one and raise no risk to myself or others, but cautiously proceeding through a junction. There's a lot of urban protection provided too... the last place a cyclist wants to be at a set of lights, is the green box in front of all the cars... they want to be against the edge of the curb (protected), about 10 feet ahead of the cars. Cycle lanes are pathetic - designed for the numpties on the road that wish to cycle, but not actually get anywhere, or don't have a clue about traffic. I've been quite harsh about this before... everyone that wants to use the road, should have to demonstrate a competence and awareness... don't get me started on horses - if only they had the equivalent of an MOT. |
