Insurance "Claim" - Dilemma

A while back I posted about me 2 month old SV getting knocked over on a Petrol Station Forecourt by a 4x4..........badly dented tank and various minor scuffs and scratches.

Had the Quote from the Dealer (and ok'd by the Insurance Assessor) a while back. With VAT would be around £2,900 . Trust me that (tank apart) it doesn't look like £3k of damage! Indeed had a look tonight and needed the quote to remind me of everything that was damaged!

Over the last few weeks have had various conversations with the Dealer, about maybe pushing for a write off and then doing a trade in for something bigger, even if S/h (Blackbird?!) or, cough, doing a deal on the repairs actually completed ;)

I was originally intending to claim against the 4x4's insurance co, but my broker says, no - claim via my own first and if they later recover then they give me back a couple of years no claims (I have loads at the moment :D - and being old - 41 - means that it doesn't really matter either way for my next insurance renewal).

Anyway, it turns out I have TWO insurance companies, an extra one that also deals with uninsured losses. My understanding is that this usually applies to recovering the excess (and maybe clothing?) - these guys sent me a letter a while back saying that Mr 4x4 wanted the chance to settle direct, can I send them the insurance quote. Methinks he is gonna have a heart attack when he sees the quote, but worth a stamp.

Just got a letter from insurance company no 2, enclosing a photocopy of a cheque from Mr 4x4 personally for the FULL amount :D. Apparently the reason I do not have the original cheque is that he made it payable to Insurance Company no 2 and they say it should be made payable to me direct  so they returned it to him to re-issue. (A little bit more to the story that I can't go into that leads me to suspect that he has good reason to pay direct / make sure this does not develop into legal or otherwise - obviously nearly 2900 of them ;)).

Obviously I am not counting my chickens quite yet :smt081 (yes I am :smt119)........but looks like I am going to be quids in with a slightly damaged motorbike and the thick end of £2900 in cash to sort it. Even with the dealer doing the spannering I reckon around £700 will have the bike looking good (at least like a 12 month old bike, instead of a 3 1/2 month old one). and I reckon £2200 covers a lot of depreciation. In fact if I sold the bike (after the repairs), plus the cash I reckon I would be all square on the bike after 4 months of ownership if not a few quid up.

So the dilemma is..........do I keep the SV (slightly worn) for another year and then sell or take the opportunity to effectively get me money back now and either buy a brand spanking new SV (not over keen - I like the SV, but it has never "grabbed me") or "Invest" the cash as part payment on a s/h Litre plus :riding:

Wahoo! had to share :D

Get something bigger. You've said the SV doesnt do it for you, and you're practically over the hill* so go for it :-)

Cheeky git :p

Been Googling......was thinking 2nd hand Blackbird or even a ZZR1100 (a bit old but I just like 'em).......but the CB1300 looks interesting. if a bit pricey.

Strangely enough I can't say too much really excites me. A bit too old (and non-bendy!) for the Race Reps (are they still called that?! :D).

I would love one of those 3 wheeled Gileras but just seem a bit too wide for easy filtering. I have strange and varied tastes!

Seems every time I see you post it's along the lines of "I should've bought a missile"

So get on with it. I seem to remember kwak doing a big brute muscle bike thing, zrx12 or something like that? I liked the look of that more than h#ndas offering.

zzr11 is big, comfy and fairly bulletproof.

But I do think the SV is great bike. Honest :D ..........Guess I always want what I don't have :(:D

The grass is always greener. I'm constantly thinking about the next bike, even though I'm still loving mine. Those Hondas are supposed to be quite brutish, but agree with the ZRX1200 as mentioned above. Retro, powerful fun!?

My personal opinion on the whole affair...

1) You're one hell of a jammy &^£$*!.
2) I'd be fixing the SV myself, on the cheap - hell, use filler on that tank if you have to!
3) With the spare cash, I'd be buying a stolen/recovered bike from a specialist, and doing that up.

Result, two bikes. Keep the SV as you think it's a good bike, do up a stolen/recovered as a toy to play with.

Do what I did: Get a quote for the value of the damage, including vat and labour from a garage. Then get the cash, fix the damage that actually makes a difference to the bike/bothers you with bits from a breakers for ?200 and then use the spare money for other things. I'd be inclined to do this even if going for a trade in on a blackbird or whatever. Get a pay out on the bike (don't get it written off), then do up the bike just enough so you get a decent trade in price on it and then add the extra cash from the claim to the trade in vbalue and you'll probably wind up with more capital towards a new bike than if you just wrote it off and got "market value".

where do you find stolen/recovered bikes? police auctions? or are there companies that the police deal with first?

Re: Insurance "Claim" - Dilemma

I couldn't find this thread earlier this evening. doh!

But found it when I was searching "SV1000"........;)

I am going to spend ?700 on doing the bike up and then sticking ?2k in me pocket - partly tempted to keep the SV650 for a couple of years - the depreciation is basically paid for now. Albeit I would "have" to buy a decent can (for the noise!).

I didn't realise how much power the SV1000 had - something made me think around 90hp???. Bad news is that no S version this year :( (and dealer says going to be dropped in 2009 due to EU emissions regs - so for Suzuki they HAVE to be all sold by 31/12/08. Might be replaced with something, but no idea at the mo)........the naked "Classic" looks ok. and cheap - even before talking a deal. I wonder how much a half fairing would cost.......and also TWO aftermarket cans.......:p

I like the Honda, but methinks a new one is just a bit too rich for me to justify. and I love the Honda build quality. Of couse if it was a 6 and not a 4!

But as I said to the dealer today, odds on I will buy something (s/h) that simply grabs my fancy on that day, whether sitting on his forecourt or someone elses.......could be anything :D

Just done a Google........

http://www.granbymotors.co.uk/motorcycle.php?vn=911

NEW 2006 (K6) model "08" Plate - £4999 seems a bit rich for a 2 year old bike (and a deleted model), given that an 08 (albeit unfaired) is listed by Suzuki at £5650 and they are also doing £400 cash back........

I figure if their is one around, must be a few more.......have heard of pre-reg bikes, but 2 years does seem a bit OTT!

Both in a proper colour (Black!) and no red seat!

Well that's not pre-reg that might be why ;) pre-reg would put it on an 06 plate. It's been sat about unregistered for 2 years, though, and although the price is a tad high, it looks like you've got the extra of the belly pan thrown in there, plus the faired version costs more than the naked version (£400 on the 650, not sure how much on the 1000).

There you go, a shiny new old bike. Its cheap, British if you think back to the days of Imperial Colonialism, economical....

Cheers! They do a nice line in sidecars as well........

Actually a few years back I was tempted by an Enfield 500 scrambler (now with Electric Start!).

http://www.realclassic.co.uk/bikepix...ra05100404.jpg

For me they have a certain "brutish" charm.

Royal Enfield Bullet Electra-T

Capacity: 499cc
Type: 4-stroke a/c single
Transmission: 5-speed chain
Max power: 25bhp @ 5500rpm
Max torque: 29.5lb/ft @ 3000rpm
Wheelbase: 1370mm
Dry weight: 160kg
Seat height: 740mm
Colour/s: Silver
Top speed: 78mph
Fuel economy: 70-85mpg
New price: ?3995

Cheap but slow OR cheap and good MPG?

Today had a wander around another couple of dealers. The XTZ660 big single is back (a bit tall) made me think though. Some nice Italian stuff esp. Aprillia and Moto Guzzi and the Yamahas look good this year, if not quite "me"........also a S/h ZZR1200. A lot smaller than I thought (I was thinking "lorry" for some reason - but not much diff to an ZZR11), wrong colour (blue) low miles, good but not mint, although a bit overpriced.......didn't enquire further. Yet :smt048

I have wide tastes! Unfortunately no lottery win and no double / treble garage!

PS happy Birthday. Old Geezer!

That was what got me interested. Obviously even "Only" 90hp is enuf in the real world. But more (spare?!) is always good in my book. And I am thinking if the SV650 V twin engine feels fun......the 1000 must be grrrrrreat, and with around 120hp (plus or minus) not really a slow litre bike......and the noise?

http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/l...08/SV1000s.jpg

I am imagining it in black.....(and a better pic than supplied by Granby!). The Naked is tempting. But not nearly as much as the S

I am guessing that if Granby have a couple on their shelf that probably a few also still around elewhere. Should have realised that 08 plate means not pre-reg! Doh! But surprised that a 2 year old model is still around. Although not overkeen on an old new bike, would I be right in saying that it would be on the usual Suzuki Warranty?

and as I said before GBP5k seems a bit rich for a 2 year old discontinued model, even if "New"............ given the price of the 08 (unfaired) model GBP5,250 (after GBP400 Cashback)......do ya think 4k would be too hopeful?

how ya manage that. İnsurance dont normaly work. n dont get people sendın personal cheques very often. id repaire the bike cheaply then f*ck ıt off. get a litre or a trick supersport 600.

or th gxxxr 750.

thats my opinion

Re: Insurance "Claim" - Dilemma

I believe the SV1000 is a fair bit down on 120bhp. The original '97 TL1000s engine was 120bhp, but subsequent versions of the engine have been detuned to varying degrees. Admittedly, the SV1000 has considerably more than the (castrated) 83-83bhp version of the lump that appears in the DL1000, but I believe stock bikes are a smidgeon over 100bhp. Still, as you say, more than enough power for most riders' abilities on the road!

Cheque arrived this morning. Wahoo! :D:D

Ok, cheque not cleared yet - but "some" parts now on order and at the same time SV booked in for it's first service (at last). Next week or the week after I should have a March 08 SV Sport - with a few scuffs and around £2k burning a hold in me pocket :smt041

SV650 - best bike I have ever had (pound wise!).

For some strange reason I was looking at a 650 V-strom - probably the very attractive top box

But fave at the moment is keep the SV (add an Exhaust and maybe some bar risers) - and get one of these!

I leave it after a night in the pub (they seem to use 'em on the "Carback" services).........I can persuade myself of anything ;)
