Looking at a new bike

Hey am looking at replacing my sv650n as i want abit more poke really. Current bikes im looking at are:

Bandit 1250
gsxr 600 (possibly 750)
b-king
cb1000r

Now i'll be doing about 200 - 250 miles a week so looking for something fast, n comfy but also good for going for a blast now and again. Also want it to be as reliable as can be really without having to service it all the time. Obviously im gonna test ride some bikes but looking for more of an opinion and known faults to look out for etc (kinda like the water in front plug on the sv) which i only found out recently lol. Oh and i'll be looking to buy new (if that makes any difference)

Re: Looking at a new bike

CB1000R looks damned nice, its only been out 2 weeks though so no idea what the known faults are, it will also cost an arm and kidney to service it I imagine like all new hondas.

I would go for the gsxr600/750 but cant imagine them being massively comfy for 250 miles a week, or again cheap to service.

Talking about comfort though, i find my 600rr more comfortable than my old sv. I can do 100miles without a stop and feel fine, on the Sv I was dying of bumb numbness.

Pretty much everyone thinks their bike's the best one to have. The Gr33k will be along shortly with a rather predictable and defensive post about some old aprillia they don't make anymore.

To my mind there are such brilliant deals on used bikes I can't see why I'd buy new, but I would say test a range of bikes. Try a naked middleweight such as the hornet 600 / Z750 as you may well find it suits you too.

Bandit 1250 - Heavy, but should be bullet-proof.
GSXR600/750 - A brilliant sportsbike, but expensive if you were to drop it...
B-King - Marmite bike, I like it.
CB1000R - Been out approximatly 4 seconds, positive reviews though.

Insurance may be a deciding factor of course:cool:

Have to admit if I get my redundancy next year I'm going for a testride on the cb1000r, tis lovely.....

Other nakeds to consider if thats what you like

Buell Lightning
Triumph Speed/Street Triple
Z1000/Z750
The new Vmax

Think my next bike will be either a speed triple or cb1000r

Heh, Jambo you are a very naughty man :D

Only thing on your list I've ridden is a GSXR-750. I find it more comfy than my SV was, but neither were as comfy as the faired bandit 600 I had as a loan bike, that was a real mile muncher.

Best advice I can give is to get test rides on those on your list and then make your own mind up.

In that vein, yep the Z750 is the one to go for (not the overpriced Z1000 tho) :P

600rr wins every test/review out there. I do 250+ miles a week on mine and never have any issued with comfort. gsxr's great if you're of a shorter frame.

You might be a bit disappointed in thecb1000r....not very exciting to ride...but looks the mutts nuts.

How about a SV1000n ? Though you can only get them second hand now...

Looks like that might be a lie -

I did know they did this one "The SV1000 Classic'

For £5650 you get seat cowl and Renthal bars too.

Funny you should say that, im only 5'' 4' and usually find sports bike seats are lower but wider and tend to splay my stumps out too far.

My extra wide ar$e and long legs must compensate for it somehow :D on my rr. Mind you it's an 08 model and built for more comfort apparently. Wish I could fit a gixxer....just too small for me and I look ridiculous.

Yep tends to be top of the pile this year...but that's of the 600s. I suspect if you put it up against the 750 (which isn't a fair fight anyway) the flexibility of the 750 engine would far outweigh the smaller differences between all the SS600s in terms of handling, engine, etc. Only some things you can't get past, e.g. if you can fit it comfortably (as comfortably as a SS600 lets you). I'd expect that to be a deal breaker on any bike...

Re: Looking at a new bike

There was an article in Bike magazine a couple of months back putting the K8 GSXR750 up against a VFR800 for touring and they rated the GSXR as BETTER. The only thing it lost out on was pillion comfort and tank range (about 20-30 miles less due to a smaller tank). Everything else they said was better, the engine, comfort, power delivery and the fact that you can have some serious fun at the weekend :) . If you want it cheaper, the K6/K7 are almost identical apart from the headlight and can be picked up quite a bit cheaper than new.

I'm a generation out of date on the bandit, and 2 on the GSXR but I tested these two back to back a few years ago (2001 Bandit 1200 Vs K1 GSXR 600). The engine on the Bandit was phenomenal, smooth, torquey, strong through the whole rev range, but I was riding a bandit 600 as my main bike at the time and the handling and riding position were pretty much the same which I'd decided wasn't for me. The GSXR I rode straight after, and found the wind protection to be a bit minimal, but the suspension and brakes were great. The engine felt a bit weak after the bandit 1200 but would have felt strong from my Bandit 600.

Enjoy, and make sure you ride a few different types of bike!

Yep and lighter too, cos of the exhaust :D

Having said that, George White are offering some pretty good deals on their bikes at the moment (seems to be most of the supersport/litre sport bikes). For the K8 750 you can get £2000 of "stuff" with it - leathers, helmet, exhaust, and a few other bits and bobs. It's a good deal if you are in the market for the stuff, I think (or can sell it on for a decent price).

Re: Looking at a new bike

Get a GSXR. Don't just look at the 600/750 but consider the 1000 too for more usable road power. They will be comfy enough, consumption not really any different to an SV and if you ride it at the same speed as the SV the servicing costs don't really vary much.

Buy a brand new "last years" model and save a packet. No more than £7k for a Thou, £6500 for 750 or £5500 for a 600. Possibly less if you are canny.

As it happens, due to a neck injury I have to change my bike, so the 'Blade has to go and a naked has to come in.

I have spent today riding the Street Triple, the Speed triple and the Bandit-S 1250.

The biggest surprise was the Bandit. The latest model has so much grunt, and while it's a bit on the porky side, it handled well and was very, very comfortable.

The Street Triple is an absolute joy to ride - I don't know how Triumph make that 675 lump pull like it does..... Very light, very nimble, fast and easy to ride. For the money, it's a great bit of kit, and the new "R" version with the Daytona suspension & brakes should be even better (at a premium of £750....)

The Street Triple is the dogs, I'm hoping to have permission from the bank manager from the warm side of the bed to do the deal next week.

I love Honda's, but the CB1000R looks like a Jap Street Triple, and it will never sound as good.

For the money, the naked SV1000 is a good option too.

Prefer the speed triple myself TBH...
Having ridden the 955i daytona for the last two years the 675 street triple just felt like too much hard work!

Correct. But also very used to the lowdown grunt of the big triple now. The 675 also felt a little too "twitchy" for me but that may have something to do with the size of the bike compared to the size of me...:)
