am I doing anything wrong
By trimming away the excess stalk on the broccoli/ asparagus etc in Asda, before I put it in my trolley.
I can understand that they would like me to buy the stuff I don't want. But why should I. Some of it is so excessive. It would be like your grocer adding half a pound of dirt to each bag of spuds. The wife cringes when I do it. But I am paying for what goes in the trolley. Not what stays in the shop. |
Re: am I doing anything wrong
Well it probably saves you about 3 pence per brocolli. I'd say you are within your rights to do it, but you should probably move to Scotland or Holland to be with your fellow cheapskates ;)

Re: am I doing anything wrong
My grandad gets his pen knife out in the super market and does the same thing. Apparently in Ireland knives are provided so that you can trim your brocolli before it goes in the bag.
Sounds pretty sensible to me mary |
Re: am I doing anything wrong
Thinking of also shelling the peas from the pods as well
|
Re: am I doing anything wrong
possibly a bit much :)
|
Re: am I doing anything wrong
I do it, Val does it,
even educated fleas do it etc! |
Re: am I doing anything wrong
Good idea.
You could cut the crust off the bread and peel the orages too. |
Re: am I doing anything wrong

|

|
Re: am I doing anything wrong
Oh arn't we a bunch of tight so and so's
|
Re: am I doing anything wrong
I have never done it and would rather trim it off in the store than wait until I got home to do it. TBH I haven't seen or heard of anyone else doing it until now though ;)
|
Re: am I doing anything wrong
you bunch of tight gits.
I now do internet shopping cos I hate shopping and always end up buying whatever is on offer. Buy big jar of whatever and get another free - even when I dont really like whatever. |
Re: am I doing anything wrong
Much as I hate the direction knife legislation is going I'd have to say you probably are doing something wrong.
Firstly, I've been warned (off the record, not an official caution or anything) that carrying a swiss army knife - a standard short blade, non-locking one - in my glovebox has the potential to land me in trouble. If this is potentially iffy then surely carrying one round a supermarket, getting it out and waving it around in the fruit and veg isle is surely going to get you some attention. Secondly, the store is choosing to offer you a set amount of goods for a set price - it's up to you whether you accept that price, but I'd say it's not up to you to arbritarily change the terms of that offer to better suit yourself. If you only fancy half a pack of biscuits can you cut the pack in half and only pay half? What is the vendor supposed to do with the other half of biscuits? I certainly see where you're coming from in that the supermarket are potentially adding dead weight to a product sold by weight, but surely your recourse is to negotiate a better deal, not to simply change the terms of the offered deal to better suit yourself without negotiating this with the vendor. Having said that, Tesco seem to be raking in the cash, so screw 'em :D |

sweet jeeezus, never even heard of that
what about peelin the oranges and apples and potatoes, that would be a few quid saved :D sounds like there are plenty of "Tam Mullin's" down south  |
Re: am I doing anything wrong
I take the green stalks off my tomatoes, and get them to weigh them out of those bags! I saved at least 3p last time I went shopping by this method, enough to fuel the scooby 1/7th of a mile :)
|
Re: am I doing anything wrong
I cook what's left on the stalks, I don't throw any of it away. It's tasty. Next year I'm going to grow my own as I'm fed up of being conned by supermarket prices. I planted some onion sets today:p
|
Re: am I doing anything wrong
I have no objection to purchasing the stalks as the kids love 'em (strange things - kids). but what I do find annoying is the persistence of supermarkets to sell their veg in shrinkfilm stuff. In the past, I have taken this stuff as a.I do not see the need for it and b.the veg is alive, it does not need suffocating in a plastic thingy and c.It's another piece of rubbish/packaging that I end up ditching on behalf of someone else.

Re: am I doing anything wrong
Do the same at the fish counter, ask them to remove the heads and fillet it ;)

Re: am I doing anything wrong
When I used to work in ASDA (sigh) I once had a surreal experience that could be of help here.....
Me: <arranging loose broccoli, with standard issue Sunday morning hangover> Shopper: (to husband) so according to the garage, my Jag needs new tyres, again, I can't believe it. How long do they last? Husband: About a year, mine were done last August. Its best to get a set of 4 at once, of course <haha> Shopper: Oh, well, mine have only been on 10 months, how outrageous. How many broccoli for <the horses name, I forget> do we need this week? Husband: We have 2 left, so just 8 Shopper: Oww kay <snap> <snap> <snap> <snap> <snap> <snap> <snap> <snap> ...... 8 chopped veg. In the trolley. Using his hands. |

Re: am I doing anything wrong
Ah-ha its your barstewards that mess up my loverly displays..........(Tesco produce slave)
but mind you the left over bits are great to use as missiles to throw at fellow tesco's slaves when there not looking ...... and what are you doing buying produce from tesco its shiite and yess shelling the peas, destalking broc,de-leafing the outsides of the cabbage sprouts ect and other wierd stuff does go on but the best yet is a bag of spud peelings left next to the loose spuds that guy must of been a 1/2 scot 1/2 dutch jew .... :))) and you do realise we leave that crap on cos "EVERY LITTLE HELPS" runs for cover |
Re: am I doing anything wrong
Makes me wonder if I can get away with removing the beer from it's packaging? Only problem is the only place I can carry it is in my stomach! :D
|
Re: am I doing anything wrong
Oh, and on a serious note Tim, when I were a lad and I worked Saturday's in the greengrocers across the road, we used to trim the crap leaves / stalks etc off the fruit & veg for the customers!
The butcher counter trim the meat for you and the fish counter fillet the fish for you, so why should the veg be any different? |
