My new tyres were a waste of time.

talking to yorkie chris and dangerous dave this morn, well i went to scrub my tires in, and ended up scrubing my ar*e on the floor.

scubbed in my tires a bit, stated to rain a litle tiny bit so i took it easy. going round a roundabout the front slipped slide and it hit a curb, bent the forks and scratched the left hand pannel.

wasnt leaning much wasnt very fast thougt it shouldnve been safe guess not. had to take belly pan off aswell as font mudgurad to get it home as i was only couple miles away but with bent forks it was catching on the whee.

couple questions, is straightening the forks safe? got a feeling one it to bent to repair so maybe a new stanction.

and is it possible to oem paint?

pics to follow scott.

Re: my new tires were a waste of time

Sorry to hear about the off mate, any diesel about? How are you?

You can straighten the forks, depends how far they are bent to really say yes or no.

Yes you can get paint to match OEM, you can DIY or get a professional to do it.

Re: my new tires were a waste of time

oo not good. Been a bit greasy last few days, not pleasant for scrubbing tyres. What tyres did you get?

edit... I feel rotten for saying this, but i'm not sure ya can blame it all on the tyre scrubbing

Re: my new tires were a waste of time

Re: my new tires were a waste of time

Sorry to hear this man , no matter what new tyres you have , they all have to be taken with great caution in weather like this . Even then , a bald patch or diesel can make life pretty heart stopping :( are you ok ?

dizzyblonde 04-10-08 05:59 PM

Re: my new tires were a waste of time

oh, read the other thread vaguely so figured it were storms

Re: my new tires were a waste of time

14`s are a good tyre as well , I`m thinking that something on the roundabout caused this mishap . I was told to take it easy for 200 miles  when I got my tyres 2 weeks ago . Done 900 miles on them since then though :D

scottjames 04-10-08 06:15 PM

Re: my new tires were a waste of time

ye im not blaming it on the tires i know you have to watch it ive worn in many tires it was just a ocmbination as norm, dirty round bout new tires wet.

Re: my new tires were a waste of time

I reckon that Stantion is repairable , there was a thread on here a couple of weeks back where somebody had Stantions far worse than theat and they were repaired . What bike is it ?

Aaah it`s ok I can see it is a Curvy now :D

Re: my new tires were a waste of time

I had an off at some speed and the steering was wonky as a result, even after new bars, but all it took to sort it was the front wheel being re-aligned - you're damage may be different but it may not be that bad. Nevertheless, I have spent a fortune on repairing mine! So much for 3rd party only!!

Re: my new tires were a waste of time

Luckily I scrubbed my new rear tyre in last weekend but I'm getting a new front one this week which should be fun and games. Glad your safe mate that's the main thing.

You can get that fork straightened.

scottjames 04-10-08 08:10 PM

Re: my new tires were a waste of time

does any one knwo what it cost roughly a friend said a place he knows will do it or 10 quid ive found place tht does it for 40 but obi i want it done right.

Lozzo 04-10-08 08:16 PM

Re: my new tires were a waste of time

When I get them straightened it's done by a pro and he charges me 30 quid a stanchion. You'll pay more if he has to strip the fork leg down and rebuild it though.

dizzyblonde 04-10-08 08:21 PM

Re: my new tires were a waste of time

So long as the stancion hasn't got a 'crease' is what I was led to believe. I've got the pair of shiny forks upstairs from when I bent them on the deer, shame they have a slight crease...I kinda liked them :-(
Had to buy a new set

Re: my new tires were a waste of time

Re: my new tires were a waste of time

That's what I did when I bent mine.

Admittedly I snapped one fork, bent the other rather a lot and buckled the wheel so there wasn't a lot worth keeping...

Re: My new tyres were a waste of time.

You can sometimes find SRAD600 forks for a sight less than SV ones...

scottjames 05-10-08 09:55 PM

Re: My new tyres were a waste of time.

i would love a gixr front but is it easy sounds like a lot of work to me and i want to be riding it now. i might get it bk together then start collecting the bits for a front end swap. if it can be straighten then me and a friend have looked at putting his thundercat front on for now. a few measurements and looks posible. ;)

Re: My new tyres were a waste of time.

how much roughly would a gsxr front cost? it would have to be usd forks.

scottjames 05-10-08 10:00 PM

Re: My new tyres were a waste of time.

would 96 gsxr 750 srad forks fit?

scottjames 05-10-08 10:02 PM

would 96 gsxr 750 forks fit? obi with the right yokes.

yorkie_chris 05-10-08 10:04 PM

Re: My new tyres were a waste of time.

Is that the first of the SRAD's, or the last of the slabbies?

think srad they are usd

yorkie_chris 05-10-08 10:08 PM

Re: My new tyres were a waste of time.

Right yeah a whole front end from the SRAD's will drop right in. Was 96-99 I believe. You just need a top head bearing from TWF

scottjames 05-10-08 10:10 PM

Re: My new tyres were a waste of time.

so any shrad, 600 or 750 will fit with the bearing? what about the gsxr clipons can you use them? or o they need to be changed.

yorkie_chris 05-10-08 10:12 PM

Re: My new tyres were a waste of time.

Too low, will catch on fairing. Many use TLS clipons. Or VTR clipons if you go for the SRAD600 forks.

Or do it properly and fit some risers and handlebars :-P

Re: My new tyres were a waste of time.

haha your funny chris. ill have to read up to mo. i can see me fixin the std atm the mo i cant afford to have to bike off the road while i shop for gsxr stuff. nor can i afford it, might have to get bit by bit. :D

+ 1

Can take about two hours to fit including rigging up the speedo, depends on experience and the correct tools though.

Re: My new tyres were a waste of time.

And finding the parts for the speedo...

Re: My new tyres were a waste of time.

Should you wish to get the original forks repaired, I'd try:
www.motoliner.com

As a first port of call, used several times, good service and good results.

A bit of wiring and a part form Ducati is all you need to rig the speedo on to the front wheel, 100% reliable for me since 2000.

Buy it all bit by bit if you have limited funds, if you shop carefully you can get all the money back by selling your SV front end.

Re: My new tyres were a waste of time.

What ducati part? I ended up with a random hall effect sensor from farnell components

i have used them in the past not for bike stuff i must admit but to do stuff for my towing frames etc etc and are really nice people and helpful when you meet them

scottjames 06-10-08 05:04 PM

Re: My new tyres were a waste of time.

i had found moto liners on the internet, im going to give them a ring to mo. will they want me to strip the forks or do they do it all?

cheers guys i think ill get gsxr stuff bit by bit that way i can get the stuff i want rather than have to sell stuff that come with bulk buy.

also, am i right in thinkin some sort of triamph wheel will let me use the original speedo? if so what one?
