New driver, caught speeding...
OK, this isn't about a bike, the driver in question doesn't have one. My friend is just stressing a lot, and I figured I'd ask the opinion of the Mighty .Org. :)
Just been talking to a friend of mine, and it turns out that she's passed two speed cameras, a little over the limit. Now, when I say a little over the limit, she swears she was doing less than 35mph, in 30mph zones. This is a little more complex, as she's only had a licence for 18months so is under the 6 point rule. I have talked her through the whole NIP in 14 days deal, but she's still very stressed. She's a single parent of two kids, and attends a university course which is a good 30min drive away from home. Public transport is an option for uni, but this would mean a train & a bus, resulting in a journey of at least 1h 15, let alone increased costs. So, .Org, the question is, if the proverbial hits the you know what, what could she expect? I'm putting money on a hefty fine and an extension to the 6 point rule due to exceptional circumstances. NB, She's not the type to try & wriggle out of it, this will certainly be a hands up experience with N Wales Police. |
Re: New driver, caught speeding...
Only if it goes to court though, otherwise it'd just be 2 x 3points byebye license.
Always possibility of a speed awareness course. But, did the cameras flash her? If so then just wait for NIP(s). Then ask Ed! |

however.... I dont know the area.. BUT.., if these 2 speed camera's were on the same journey then chances are at least one of them will not be working for whatever reason, no film etc etc...i dont think ALL speed cameras work ALL of the time and are there as a deterent?...over the years i have been flashed 3 times with no come back from the camera processing unit. thats my own experience anywhoo.. |

Re: New driver, caught speeding...
Was this two seperate cameras on the same stretch of road, same time and date etc???
If they were then it can be argued that she maintained the speed between the two cameras.....therefore it is only one offence. She would have to go to court to argue this though. |
Re: New driver, caught speeding...
Like I say... ask Ed :-P

Re: New driver, caught speeding...
she is fooked, if caught bang to rights, to be caught once is bad, to be caught twice on the same stretch when cameras in 30 are bright yellow is stupidity.
she might as well book her driving test now. |
Re: New driver, caught speeding...
If her speedo said 35, then its more than likely she was doing about 30-32 and will not been done over dry.

Re: New driver, caught speeding...
my 19 yo nephew got stuck for the same thing, works 30 odd miles from home needs his car, in the end got a hefty fine, no points and voluntary 14 day ban (doesnt go on the licence though, the court just hold onto your licence for a fortnight) Wonder where the word fortnight comes from?

Re: New driver, caught speeding...
Hmm apparently.....
Middle English fourtenight, alteration of fourtene night, fourteen nights : Old English fēowertēne, fourteen; see kwetwer- in Indo-European roots + Old English niht, night; see nokwt- in Indo-European roots. |

"Now, when I say a little over the limit, she swears she was doing less than 35mph, in 30mph zones."
She wouldn't of been flashed if that was the case. Almost all cameras trigger points are set to 36MPH, IIRC. Factor in the amount the vast majority of speedos over-read by and she'd of seen at least 37/38 on the clocks to get flashed. ;) That out of the way, as a new driver, she is looking at two lots of 3 points and hence a ban. I suggest she contacts a lawyer who specialises in this if she wants any hope of being let off with regard to a ban. Which, given her circumstances, it has to be said, she has an extremely good chance of if she went to court. Courts are notoriously lax when it comes to females' motoring offences. :) |
Re: New driver, caught speeding...
Not a ban. Retaking test.

As for the comments regarding the camera's flashing, that was my point to her. She says the second definately hasn't flashed (she was in a line of cars too, so even if she was caught by this camera, chances are it hasn't got her numberplate). I'm not sure if the first one flashed or not TBH. Quote:
Thanks for all the comments so far folks. :) |

Thanks for that, loosing the licence would make life very difficult, but I reckon she could cope with only a couple of weeks holiday. I'll pass on the news in the morning. :) |

If all else fails a little revenge would do.

Re: New driver, caught speeding...
Hope she gets away with it but also learns from the experience. Bloody scamera's. I'm all for them in areas where speed needs to be controlled but usually they just aren;t used in this way. Very sad.
