Police dont get speeding tickets - its official

This made a very interesting read.
It would be good to get any police officers on this forum to comment, either on or off the record.

You do realise that the difference between cops and robbers is the uniform dont you?

As a police officer I can assure you we get tickets !! And we probably have to answer to them alot more than Joe Public.

And when I had my bike accident, I was off duty, I was investigated for due care when Joe Public wouldnt have been. Sometimes we get it tougher :(

If responding to an immediate job we will ping gatso's and yes of course they do get filed!!!

But if we are driving normally to a job (ie not a blue light run) we are not allowed to break the speed limit and if we do we get the fine like anybody else.

There's a quote from the "brake" charity on the site... so that's my attention span gone...

Copper doing 35 paying attention is less dangerous than some doddering tw4t doing 28.

Oh yeah responding we are only allowed to do 20mph over and if we do any more, ticket coming our way.

Also we have a virtual point system in our force, whereby you have to answer to the big computer in the corridor or power if you do anything, even dent a car.

I wouldnt do such a thing .... my last RTC I hadn't made it out the back yard ! Parked with a skip behind me and went to a blue light run, feeling very poorly all flued up and light headed, rammed it into reverse :smt099 instead of 1st and took the light cluster out with the skip ! It was a hugh blue thing, I am now know as Skippy at work :(

I guess you guys chance it then just like Joe Public. At least that would explain the Pan going 120ish down the M3 last night with no blue's on?? I don't mind as long as they let us do it withouth getting all high and mighty. ;)

As all the knowledgable responses above say, Police officers on duty who get caught speeding with no justification get prosecuted just like the public. If they're involved in an RTC they get investigated much more thoroughly.
I am amazed that people really believe different!

I think the media coverage is a load of bo***x to be honest. No idea where they get their figures from but if one bad apple is bought to light they tar the others with the same brush.

I know I will not risk my pension unless a colleague is getting the s**t kicked out of them and they put in an assistance call, then I MAY go over the 20mph circumstances taken into account.

I am also initial pursuit trained which whilst in a pursuit I can exceed the 20mph but I am constantly relaying the driving conditions to the duty manager and it his his/her decision as to whether the pursuit will continue.

As for Skippy scenario...... why did I disclose that  I take offical Muppet status for that one (even had the Sgt sat next to me).

I work in Humberside and we don't have the 20mph limit unless were in a van. As all the above say, if we have an accident doing a blue light run we're in the **** (or any accident for that matter). We still have to justify everything we do all the time. If you have an accident now matter how minor in our force you are banned from driving immediately until the road policing inspector has investigated the circumstances in full, meaning you can't drive for months!!!

As for speeding fines, if not on a blue light run for a genuine reason you pay your fine, take your points and get run by D&C.

I heard that one day 2 months ago that a Teacher took an extra 5 minutes lunch break and had to run down a corrider to teach a lesson!!!!

Imagine what the press would do with that class of information maybe they would run a feature!!!

-------------------------------

It sounded better than the rant I was going to post but I think most people on this forum can understand this a crap story with no more substance than to give the UK police another kicking by press.

Clearly the police do not get fined like anybody else. The statistics are irrefutable. 99.9% of police officers were let off!!!

Re: Police dont get speeding tickets - its official

Look at the figures.. West Mids as an example. 8500 police vehicles activated cameras. Can you imagine how many emergency response incidents West Mids have each year? a hell of a lot more than 8500, and many of them have more than one vehicle responding. Yet still only 8500 vehicles were detected speeding, I'm amazed it's so low!
Could it be that when most police vehciles are on normal patrol duties the drivers use a bit of common sense and drive at sensible speeds? They know cameras exist and they know the consequences of offending and being caught.
Even the driving school, who teach response driving, pursuits etc, regularly have to justify their actions when caught by either speed, or red light, cameras!
If you were to check the figures for the other two emergency services I suspect you'd find a similar patern.
Stop knocking the police based on misleading statistics published by the media.

true story, one of the fellas i manage who works in a rehab in prison, was caught doing 110 down a dual carrageway, he even indicated and past a 'marked' police car, he was stopped, spoken with and he played the 'just left work' 'where do you work' 'in the prison' the officer then changed tone to a friendly one, and said dont do it again and gave him a ticket which said 'in excess of 70' he still got a ticket and 3 points, he had to produce when he turned up at police station to show all of it, when the clerk saw the 'in excess of 70' said 'so your job' the fella said no, she then said oh sorry, this is what comes in if police are stopped speeding.

for him a result as normally over a ton and its a ban... but.......he got £60 plus 3 points

Feel free to refute the statistics.

I am the first to question the British press & if it were one of the red tops I would not have even started this thread, but I dont remember the The Telegraph being dragged into court recently for making stuff up.

What you are looking at is a Police Officer using his/her power of discretion!!!

Ask on this site who has

a) been stopped by the police and had commited some type of offence (speeding, mobile anything) and not had a any more than a roadside telling off? or

b) if they have been stopped for speeding and they ended with a lesser punishment than they thought they would get?

On a side note I can set off as many as five cameras on the way to a call, thats not a boast just a fact of driving in London.

My brother is a paramedic, and he has said the same as others in this thread (emergency services drivers that is). In fact, he has exactly the same deal as Shell, despite being in a different area of the country.

As I've said on the .Org before, when not on a call, emergency services should be treated exactly the same as any other member of the public.

When on a call, all rules go out of the window as far as I'm concerned. If my family were in danger & someone got a speeding ticket because they were trying to help, I'd happily pay it for them!!

Demonz 18-11-08 10:10 PM

Re: Police dont get speeding tickets - its official

The misleading comment in the article is only a quarter are thought to be emergency responses, but all the other stats were passed to the media from each area. But- you dont expect me to beleive that only 11 vehicles vehicles weren't responding to emergency response incidents? Could it be? I would say probably or highly likely. I admire police work but I dont beleive for one minute the police drive like saints all of the time.

A Police Pan Euro??? Are you sure.

I was under the impression that Honda UK had taken them all back following a number of stability incidents, one of which caused the death of a traffic officer.

Got to admit I've been let off by the police more times than I've been done, and sometimes I really was doing silly speeds.

Honda only took the 1300's back as those are the ones that had issues.

I believe it was also at the discresion of the individual force if they returned all the 1300's they had.

Your friend thinks he got a result...and yes he did. But perhaps the police officer couldn't prove he was doing over 100mph. If the Police car wasn't fitted with the correct equipment the officer would only have his opinion to prove the vehicle was travelling at over 70mph. I guess he wouldn't be able to prove it was travelling at over 100mph. The prison officer might think it was because of his job...but was it, or does he just think that? My thoughts are if your going to get stoped its better you get stoped by a police officer than flashed by a camera which has no discresion. But thats a whole different story................
