Baba in hosptital
Just got back from the hospital..my daughter has had a febrile convulsion whilst at her grandma's.
This is her first one so she is staying in hospital overnight and the wife is with her. It's been a weird day anyway. Started with the neighbour playing Celine Dion songs at 8:30. Then the wife decides that I should stop putting off the jobs that need doing on the bike ( that's just freaky ). The wife goes out to town to get herself some birthday presents ( and yes it is her birthday today!! ) and forgets to tell me that her mum IS having baba, so there's the knock on the door, i get baba ready and send her packing to her grandma's. At this time I think sod it, may as well try and put the tail-tidy on the bike ( ermax one ). After 4 hours of not knowing what i'm doing and getting myself cut and freezing hands I get the oem undertray off. Hmm time for a brew me thinks, then the phone call, I dash round to grandma's ( slipping and sliding on the way ) to find baba curled up on the floor, butt naked, out cold and shivering like she has just been in a frozen lake. The wife is already there on the phone speaking to a doctor. After 10 minutes the ambulance arrives and off baba and I go to the hospital with the wife following. I need a drink! Anyway, baba seems to be fine at the moment and the wife has been so calm, it's amazing! I'm not freaking out at mo, just need to write things down. It might help me worry a bit less. Off to get a drink now. Ste. |
Re: Baba in hosptital
Jez that doesnt sound to clever. Hope she recovers OK.

Re: Baba in hosptital
My daughter had a couple of these, the first of these was just as I left the doctors cos I knew something was wrong with her but he dismissed me.
He later admitted that he was worried that he'd missed pnemonia. Tosser. Anyway she stayed in two nights at hospital, so don't worry if they keep her in an extra day, it's the best place for her to be. She'll be fine, make the most of a quiet night to yourself! |
Re: Baba in hosptital
By the way, how old is she?
|
Re: Baba in hosptital
She'll be 2 on the 29th.
What gets me is how quick it has happened, she was fine this morning. No indications of any illness. Running around, being annoying as usual ;-) . |
Re: Baba in hosptital
Ah, if she's nearly two then they probably would keep her in longer, as it's more unusual to have these fits as they get older, was it because of a high temperature?
|
Re: Baba in hosptital
Apparently so!
The thermometer reading from the medic was 39.2. |
Re: Baba in hosptital
Ouch, that's high. Her Gran did the right thing with getting her clothes off for her to cool down. (Grans always know best! ;))
If you're wife is staying overnight in hospital she won't get much sleep, if I remember right they checked my daughter's temperate every hour. She'll be fine, but I know how much of a worry it is. Don't have too much to drink in case you're needed! |
Re: Baba in hosptital
Thanks!
Not getting drunk, just a having a couple. |
Re: Baba in hosptital
Blooming heck Ste what a fright for you all. Am glad she seems to be ok and she`s in the best place for now.
Is unbelievable how kids can be fine one minute then really poorly the next! Is usually down to some sort of infection and resulting high temperature (with my son was always an ear infection). I`m sure that with some anti biotics she`ll be right as rain and home in no time :grouphug: |
Re: Baba in hosptital
Hope your daughter makes a quick recovery. Can't begin to imagine how worried you must have been.

Re: Baba in hosptital
Wishing your little girl a speedy recovery. Same thing happened to my little fella when he was about the same age :-( Happened on leaving the doctors. It was one of the most scary moments of my life. The receptionist called an ambulance and was told there were none available! I had to phone around to get a lift. I was in a right state. I stayed the night with him in hospital. He recovered quickly, and it hasn't happened since *touches wood*
All the best mate, Mark |
Re: Baba in hosptital
Far more common than you'd think, basically little ones can't regulate their temp which is the cause of the convulsion, once they are cooled down they're normally fine,of course you have to make sure nothing serious is causing the high temp, but it's normally obvious, we took most to hospital, but to be honest most of the time it was more for the parents than the kids.
Unless there is anything else wrong, I wouldn't worry to much. Cheers Mark. |

Re: Baba in hosptital
yup happened to my son just before his 2nd birthday..you read about it but never really think its going to happen. Now most parents I have spoken to have had an episode. Very very scary at first ..it was the middle of the night, ambulance A&E stayed till the morning. He had 40c with our braun in ear thermometer. We now know to give paracetemol + ibuprofen when his temp goes 38c. He had another fit within a month of the first one and just dropped in the street. No sign of temperature. So far touch wood no other fits in 1 year. Its something they will grow out of by 6 so a few more years to go. As the nurse that was treating us also said that its always worth calling the ambulance out to check them out as we live 10miles away from the hospital. Chin up, take care of the family

Re: Baba in hosptital
Thanks guys/gals, feeling better.:)
Oh and thank you for the info, that does help! Btw - just realised, not even took my coat off yet! This house is out in the sticks compared to where we used to live, so being able to talk to people here is really cool. Damn, gonna quit the booze now, getting a little emotional, lol |
Re: Baba in hosptital
I think Sophie was in the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital 3 times before the age of 2 with the same thing... I was breathylised on one of the return trips at 2.30am:rolleyes: I told the officer no of course I hadn't been drinking, except for disgusting hospital tea. I had to blow nonetheless:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes: Anyway, as soon as they cooled her down with a water vapour machine she was as right as rain, and there is no lasting damage. Well tantrums and throwing things at me apart, that is:D

How is she today?
|
Re: Baba in hosptital
cheers guys/gals :-)
Been at the hospital nearly all day, most of which baba spent sleeping. She still has a slightly high temperature, but it is manageable with calpol. It's a viral infection, how she got it I dunno as she has not been near anyone with problems nor touched anything that she shouldn't. The wife is knackered but amazingly is still rockin' on, right now she has popped out to asda to do some essential shopping! She wants to rota shifts over night to keep an eye on baba, sod that, gonna let her sleep. As for the neighbour, well he's middle aged single chap with a big black merc. A very strange but friendly enough person. Thank you all for your kind, sometimes amuzing words. :D:salut::thumbsup: |
Re: Baba in hosptital
Is she still in or home now?
When Evie got home I spent three nights sleeping on her floor, until I'd convinced myself I wasn't being paranoid! |
Re: Baba in hosptital
oops, yes she's at home now.
I have my pda set up as a wireless webcam so I can monitor whilst downstairs. Not a perfect picture, but it works. |

Glad there is an easily managed cause for it as it means you won't be worrying about it so much in the future. Glad she's ok and give her a hug from the org.

Re: Baba in hosptital

As for the wife and I, well we are both knackered lol. Kids who'd ave em! Cheers Ste |
Re: Baba in hosptital
I hope she's doing ok now. Has something similar with our son, it's amazing how many people here have had the same. Chin up, and I hope she's back to normal soon.
