Hands up, who's thought about selling their bike lately?
Haven't had chance to ride my bike properly for about 6-7 weeks now and thoughts of selling the thing have started popping up more often. This time last year I managed to get out for a proper decent ride atleast once every 7-10 days, but this year due to work or severe weather, I've not been out once. I've started the bike up for 20 mins about once a week to make sure the oil is circulated properly and to give the battery a tickle but that's all.
I've almost started to resent the bloody thing, thinking how much a waste of space it is and how someone else could probably get better use out of it. But then I think about how the weather will be better soon, or that in the summer I'll wonder what to do with myself... I've stopped posting on here like I used to, never mind visiting once or twice a day to see what everyone's upto. Having said that, I've started a kitcar project today (which I've wanted to start for about 18months). This could well be one of the reasons for completely losing interest in riding but, who else has thought about selling their bike lately? Either through lack of use or bad weather? Also, the house we moved into is on a culdesac which doesn't get any attention from the gritters = ice lingers on our street for upto a week after the rest of the local roads have thawed... Great for 180 handbrake turns to reverse into our driveway, but I'd hit the deck before I even left the drive if I tried to ride out of our street... |
Re: Hands up, who's thought about selling their bike lately?
I haven't been thinking about selling my bike. The weather hasn't been great this year but I still managed over 5000 fun miles.
Instead of putting up with the crappy weather we get, I'm looking into moving to Australia or anywhere with more sun |
Re: Hands up, who's thought about selling their bike lately?
hmmm, interesting "it's not the bike, it's the weather" like it
|
Re: Hands up, who's thought about selling their bike lately?
I think the bad weather either gets to you or doesn't when it comes to riding, some people don't mind this weather (mad all of em). I won't ride in this weather due to confidence and I don't want to skid down the road. I thought about selling and I still was until recently. Got some major withdrawal symptoms and am hoping to get her out this weekend even just for an hour.
If you sell, put the money away and buy another bike in the Summer when you feel more bike minded, get your kit car done and play with that for a while, I know how fun those are too. You are not alone with your thoughts I should think. Hope you make the right decision xx |
Re: Hands up, who's thought about selling their bike lately?
Do you really not enjoy riding any more? Giving up the bike is unthinkable to me.
|
Re: Hands up, who's thought about selling their bike lately?
not used it for about a month
but sell? thats crazy talk |
Re: Hands up, who's thought about selling their bike lately?
it used to be unthinkable to me too. it was all I talked about, dreamt about and thought about constantly. Absolutely loved riding through summer but I think the minor off I had in march has left a bit more of an impact on me than I realised. I didn't like damp weather riding before, but now I almost have a bit of a phobia of getting caught on wet roads. I only had a lowside at about 20mph turning left into a major a-road which I'd done a thousand times before, but sliding across the floor and £60 of damage to the bike has made me think that it's a great big waste of time (and at the time, everyone - including myself - thought it was the luckiest/best off of all time! no one else involved, no injuries and bugger all damage)...
YC's gonna be along to give me a right bollocking in a minute since he's still got my maxton springs sat in his garage waiting to be fitted lol... |
Re: Hands up, who's thought about selling their bike lately?
winter/weather blues.
Cold isn't the problem it's the rain and road crap. Salt is rusting my bike to pieces which i haven't swapped to stainless. I only do 30 miles a week as it's my only mode of transport but she's stored in my protech shelter and washed weekly. My advice is when the weather turns cold if your scared of ice go find a half decent road and go for an hours lunch somewhere and you'll remember why biking is fun. |
Re: Hands up, who's thought about selling their bike lately?

Re: Hands up, who's thought about selling their bike lately?
could have something to do with having moved away from west yorks to north yorks - still work in cleckheaton 35 miles away, so if I get an afternoon spare, where I would have dashed home and had the bike out for an hour, it now takes me 40 mins to get home by which time the weather has started shatting all over my plans.
One thing I have thought about was maybe selling the pointy (with all the extra's) and then buying a curvy and using the leftover money to put towards the kitcar project... I can still just about fit the bike in with the chassis building table which I finished today http://lh4.ggpht.com/_c5nU_S1VtbY/SU...ture%20001.jpg bike crammed in at the front of the garage = thank god for roller shutter doors!http://lh5.ggpht.com/_c5nU_S1VtbY/SU...ture%20003.jpg chassis foundations starting to take shape http://lh3.ggpht.com/_c5nU_S1VtbY/SU...ture%20011.jpg |

Re: Hands up, who's thought about selling their bike lately?
Yep, definitely winter weather blues. Have occasional thoughts of selling myself, but come a nice sunny day or even a wet summer one and I would be lost without my bike. Just think about the good days earlier this year and you'll not want to sell :-D
|
Re: Hands up, who's thought about selling their bike lately?
just watched some of my vids on youtube and found it hard to get excited like I used to... curvy route could be the best compromise if this carries on me thinks

Re: Hands up, who's thought about selling their bike lately?
Never. :)
Wasnt a bad ride I had today in the rain... Was even warm lol |
Re: Hands up, who's thought about selling their bike lately?
Sell?............only to buy another one!
If the weathers no good I can switch off and not be bothered about riding but as soon as there's a good day I'm itching to get out again. Would like to see how you get on with the kit car, maybe keep us updated with a post every now and then? Always fancied a go my self. |
Re: Hands up, who's thought about selling their bike lately?
No.
Never. Ever. :D |
Re: Hands up, who's thought about selling their bike lately?
No Bike?????? I did think about it for about a week and a half while I was in hospital after a motorcycle accident & it nearly killed me, but I have a very short memory span & I'm back riding every day, plus getting into doing quite a bit of track work.
I am thinking of selling my car because that is sat on the front doing not a lot :) |
Re: Hands up, who's thought about selling their bike lately?
Ok, this is clearly a thinly disguised thread about the kit car, so.......
What you building? |
Re: Hands up, who's thought about selling their bike lately?
errr.. kinda but i did have 3 uptill last week and now have 4, and working a job which requires a new company car to be used they are getting a tad neglected.....
nahhhhhh ill keep them till biking season kicks off next year... hell may even buy another bike when someone gets desperate enough for cash this xmas/financial climate. i wouldnt beguin how i'd explain that to her indoors!! |
Re: Hands up, who's thought about selling their bike lately?
Never thought about selling my bikes. I have never left them in any state to sell.
I have however thought about chucking them over the edge of a cliff or in mine field a few times. |
Re: Hands up, who's thought about selling their bike lately?
Far from it - I've started commuting mine now on and enjoying it in a whole new way.
|
Re: Hands up, who's thought about selling their bike lately?
Only to get another bike, as mine has caused me bankache this month.
I will change bikes in the next year- probably to an NC30 (sadly I can't afford to have both). |
Re: Hands up, who's thought about selling their bike lately?
Also with fuel prices dropping ..I'm riding til the cows come home and then some.. ! ;)

Who's he? Nah I was wondering if it was only me who'd thought about selling or if other people were having the same thoughts due to weather/credit crackle... And while we're at it, seven inspired replica.. |
Re: Hands up, who's thought about selling their bike lately?
Could you not ride to work? Then you get to ride everyday then, which has to be a good thing.....
I do ride less this winter as i'm using the train to get work, which does save me money after 14/15 hour day I can be wrecked which isn't great for riding. I got all my kit last year so I tend to stay warm, I just layer up under my jackect which works. Though I may replace my gloves next year as they have done over 10 000 miles now. Nope I wouldn't sell my rode bike, but if things got too tight then I would sell the other but my road bike is main form transport as I don't have a car. |
Re: Hands up, who's thought about selling their bike lately?
Winter's the best time to sell you bike - the weather's rubbish and you won't miss it. Wait until the next warm and sunny day though and your stuck in a cage being passed by your mates on their bikes...
I hardly use my bike (8k in three years), it's sat in garage right now with a cover over it and it won't turn a wheel until the spring. I've thought long and hard about selling mine and while the extra cash in my pocket would be very nice, I know I'll regret it once the warmer weather arrives and I'd probably end up buying another. I don't use my bike that often but when I do I bloody well enjoy it so for that reason it's staying. |
Re: Hands up, who's thought about selling their bike lately?
I've had my bike since July and done over 6k miles on it. Have used it less recently due to ice, however I've been using it to commute to Manchester and although it's costing £90 a month on finance, I'm saving that in fuel costs alone (well was when prices were higher).
I also told the missus that the congestion charge would cost me £100 a month too . Luckily I do have an alternative means of transport and could use the train if needed, however I can get to work in 40 mins on the bike, whereas it takes double that in the car. |
Re: Hands up, who's thought about selling their bike lately?
I've considered riding to work but I don't have any textiles and my waterproof gear is ok but then I'm absolutely freezing (even with 3 t-shirts and a thin fleece on under the leather & waterproofs. I'd need some waterproof gloves as well and some thermal gloves underneath that...
Then there's the trade off in time. It takes me about 15-20 mins to get ready to ride with all the above gear listed. In the car there's never really any bad traffic (apart from the first 3 miles of m62, which usually clears in around 5 mins anyway), then I'm home free on the m1 north and a64. So add the 15-20 mins fecking around to ride home super alert because of ice and dozy holiday drivers on a mission to knock bikers off... I think the off on march has left me super scared of getting caught out on slippery roads and if the snow or rain comes, I'd rather sit in a traffic jam and be dry/warm than arrive home 15 mins earlier but with hypothermia and frostbike... |
Re: Hands up, who's thought about selling their bike lately?
If you had some fork springs fitted it wouldn't be so much of a problem...
|
Re: Hands up, who's thought about selling their bike lately?
No I just love riding too much and you're whinging... the weather doesn't stop me enjoying my bikes.
|
Re: Hands up, who's thought about selling their bike lately?
cheers dave, I can see clearly now the rain has gone. It's gonna be a bright and icey day
Yes YC I know, I keep looking at the gsxr shock on my shelf in the garage and then I start feeling guilty... You know what I'm like with keeping it clean though - slimy road salt! What teh feck! |
Re: Hands up, who's thought about selling their bike lately?
Shurrup you poof, slather it in ACF50 and ignore it. They love the abuse.
|
Re: Hands up, who's thought about selling their bike lately?
you love the abuse lol... reckon we might be able to get the springs and shocks done in the new year?
|
Re: Hands up, who's thought about selling their bike lately?
I should hope so, if they're gonna be sat there for more than another year then I think I'll put them up the loft.
|
Re: Hands up, who's thought about selling their bike lately?

|
Re: Hands up, who's thought about selling their bike lately?
haven't ridden for almost a month. miss it so much, even with this weather. dont sell, ever!
|
Re: Hands up, who's thought about selling their bike lately?
If you not riding the bike have you considered making a start on the suspension?
|
Re: Hands up, who's thought about selling their bike lately?
However upgrading to a cheaper curvy makes sense.

Re: Hands up, who's thought about selling their bike lately?
Use my bike every day but looking forward to a couple of weeks off over christmas (only so I've got enough time to do some spanner work to the bike though).
Incidentally are you building the kit car using a book written by Mr Champion (forgotten his first name). If you are then be prepared for lots of his measurements and dimensions to contradict themselves. A friend of mine did this, I helped with the initial jig work with the chassis (be careful its easy to warp it whilst welding) and he was forever phoning me saying it tells him one thing on one page and another on the next. My friend also sent Mr Champion a couple of hundred quid for a bonnet that he never recieved. |
