Best Guitarist Ever

Who's it going to be?

I nominate....

Yngwie Malmsteen. My god he's good :smt035

Edit. Just to clarify this bit most of you missed!:
(I want to mention too many other guitarists as a follow up. But that's against the rules of this thread. You can only name one!)

Re: Best Guitarist Ever

Hendrix, if he can play that good whilst that stoned he must be god.

The rest are technically good, Clapton etc but I rank Hendrix #1, playing other peoples songs, for writing + playing it must be Clapton.

No, no, no, no... first of all, there is no "best guitarist ever". Second, a guy who takes pride in smashing his guitars to bits on stage doesn't really deserve the respect that "title" warrants.

Yes, I'm partial to Steve Vai, and I know he used to do it too (not with the JEMs though, he's not stupid, he used to have some spare RGs to do it :smt040), but I find that behaviour a bit too over the top... just my two cents.

I do like a lot of the guys mentioned here though, and I'll just throw another into the mix: Steve Lukather.

That pains me too! Until I noticed that he always brings on a guitar at the end of the set, that is a pile of wank! Who would have thought Malmsteen would do things just for effect? Next minute I'll hear 27 of the 28 amps of his aren't turned on ;)

It was sickening. knocked me. Pantera were part of an absolute mega period of my life.
I've spent many good times around a lot of local bands (and famous) from that period. Also went out with a very well known guitarist of the death/goth metal scene. Not to mention my best mate at schools bro was pretty close to Max Cavelera and toured with Nailbomb.

but thats derailing...ahhhh my mispent youth
That why i can't decide who is the best.

First of all I agree with those others who have already said that there is no absolute answer - too many different people, each with their own style & each with their own merit.

Secondly I agree with the analysis of Malmsteen - all 'twiddly for effect' but NO heart or soul in his playing.

Thirdly, I'd liike to throw another name, as yet unmentioned, into the mix -

Alex Lifeson

The only person I've seen who can play (on an 'open tuned' guitar) a power chord riff with his wrist (ok, he was wearing wristbands) whilst simultaneously play a lead riff on a MiniMoog synthesizer.

I don't think there's just one.

But if you're looking at the shredders- John Petrucci.

He took all of the best bits of Yngwie (classical style and technique), via, gilbert, hendrix and others and also gets good songs out of it. And he's versatile- at home with slow melodic stuff that is played with feeling, to classical guitar, acoustic, jazz and awesome thrash rhythm. And much as the majority of his lead work is full on, he does still play what fits with the song and often with incredible taste.

I had a listen to a bit of Malmsteen- great playing, but godawful composition. So many jams on 1 chord right through the piece. I'll give it another go, but I wasn't that taken with it...

I still don't think Vai has topped Passion and Warfare- I think it's his most complete work. Bits of newer albums are great, but just don't quite touch it. He is the master of expression though. Take 'For The Love of God'. Some people knock it as the same thing played over and over again- when you listen to it with more depth, you'll realise how much it is an exercise in expression- the main riff is played differently each time it's played and it builds up into an amazing frenzy. Awesome stuff, but clearly not to everyone's taste...

Listen to 'blue'. Or even better watch his performance on G3.

When his tour dates come up I'll buzz everyone about it. I've seen him twice now, and converted many a sceptic ;)

Gilbert rocked so hard! Satriani, whilst capable. It was a bit lifeless.

huh, Satriani. Now theres a place called the Hebden Bridge Trades club, many a decent name has played there. Satriani's PR or whatever it they're called, rang up the trades club (many years back I might add) and asked if he could play there, as part of his tour ....they turned around and said Joe who???

WTF

mind you Hebden Bridge is full of stoned hippies:rolleyes:
