The throttle is all seized up [edit] carb, not throttle
Bike had been sat in the garage for over a week, got it out, started 1st click but the throttle wouldn't move at all.after a bit of wiggling I managed to get it to move but it was stiff as owt.Now excuse my naivity but I'm still getting used to my way round a bike so although I can handle a spanner,I've not really got much of a clue about what bits are what.
Off came the fairing (absolute nitemare btw) then the radiator and followed the cable to that pulley thing.I thought it would just be a case of cleaning and lubing everything up in order to get the recoil action back to the throttle.I oiled the cables and everything else I could get to on both sides of the engine but its still nackered. Its beginning to p me off so ANY advice would be greatly appreciated. |
Re: The throttle is all seized up
Did you disconnect the cables fully and get oil down them, wiggling and twisting to encourage the oil through? My dad had to do this to free up a clutch cable recently.
The other thing is the throttle tube; take off the bar end, and try and get some WD40 or something between the plastic throttle tube and the metal clip-on. |
Re: The throttle is all seized up
Its defo not the cables.I can't even move the 'pulley thing' with my hand or even with a tool.it just all seems tight.the whole mechanism.its drowned in wd40 too

Re: The throttle is all seized up
Is it the twist grip on the handlebar thats seized, or the bit down by the carbs?
|
Re: The throttle is all seized up
Soz.yeah.the bit by the carbs, shudda been more clear

That will tell you if it's a cables issue, or if it's a grip issue. If it's a grips issue, you can remove the grips to get at the throttle tube, and replace if necessary, but otherwise just clean & lube it. |
Re: The throttle is all seized up
There is a spring by the carbs, have you lub'ed that? you may need to take it off and grease it - I've never had a good look myself. Baph is right, see if its the throttle tube aswell

Re: The throttle is all seized up
The throttle cables both been disconnected from the grip, oiled.cables are moving freely up and down their tubes. Its when they get to the mechanism at the carb.thats is what is stiff.i can bearly move it with my hand.A friendly lever with a screwdriver moved it and managed to free it very slightly.I reconnected the throttle to see if i could twist it free some more.its still very stiff with no recoil at all.the spring thing can me moved by hand and is not clogged up with sh** or owt, lubed them on both sides.lubed every loint, bolt, arm and spring, soaked them in wd.still stiff,no recoil.

Re: The throttle is all seized up
don't forget copper slip to stop any future seizing. Start at one end and work back but i can't advise anymore as i'm a carb noob. Might be worth the R6 throttle mod?

Re: The throttle is all seized up
Do you have a haynes manual?

Re: The throttle is all seized up
im just gonna have to keep going and keep taking things apart, cleaning lubing and re attaching them.I should soon get to the answer.I was just worried that it was something serious that couldnt be remedied with wd40 and a tub o grease.Hopefully its not and ill be back on the road for monday. Thanks for everyones input

Re: The throttle is all seized up
Im confused as to what it coule be. I have never heard of a set of carbs siezing at all as most of the bushes in the pivots are brass! The only real way of sorting it is to take the carbs off and check, strip and clean. Its really not that hard, you will however, need a long philips screwdriver.
A couple of things to check. Take the airbox off so that you can get a better look at things. There is a linkage on the left of the carbs (as looking to the front of the bike) give that a tug. Make sure there is nothing fouling the mechanism at all. If you can, see if you can push the butterflys round with your finger. If noe of this is no, then it really is carbs off, strip clean and grease. USe white grease on the pivots. My bike is 8 years old and oterh than rusty cables, i have never had this issue. Good luck |
Re: The throttle is all seized up
This is a new one.
Try and wiggle the linkage on the left of the rear carb, see if the rear carb moves, there is a little bit of spring there. (careful with the adjuster screw, don't move it.) Then it's just carbs off, strip stuff down and grease it until it'll work. |
Re: The throttle is all seized up
I've got a similar problem with mine. its a 'x' reg with 42500 miles on the clock.
ive greased the clip-on, the cables and the spring thing tht the cables attach too as well as the bar on the left side of the carb and its still very stiff. my wrist starts hurt after a while of ridin. the throttle moves and returns properly but is really stiff |
Re: The throttle is all seized up
Buy a set of carbs, I have a set for sale, nudge, nudge, wink, wink

Re: The throttle is all seized up
This happened on my bike after it had been left 5 months.. found the problem to be the shaft running through the front carb, I had to unscrew the brass disc, pull out the shaft, copperslip the shaft then re assemble, been fine since.

Re: The throttle is all seized up
wel i lubbed up the cables n there were in reet state but there free and loose now and its still stiff. also greesed up the handle bar n tht didnt do the job either
the resistance is on the part of the carb where the cable are attached so its defo the carb. i've not got round to pulling the carbs out and tinkering with them. i cant have the bike off the road as i need it to commute so im going to buy anothe set and swap them over then fixed the carbs i pull out. hopefully that'll sort the git out lol |
