Ideas for a 25th Birthday - suggestions and advice please :)

It's the missus' 25th birthday on wednesday next week, and we're having a massive bbq on the 2nd of may where all her/our friends and family are coming along, with a view to heading into york afterwards.

My ideas are usually pretty rubbish for birthdays/suprises so could any of you offer any advice from things you've done in the past or had done for you in the past?

Idea's so far:

Booking a table in one of our favorite resaurants in york, surprise birthday meal with her parents there (although that could be a bit tricky with them living in middlesbrough/picking them up and hiding them during the day for a few hours. They're down for the weekend this weekend so I'll have a chat with them then.

Printed birthday cakes - the ones where people have an embarrassing picture from their childhood printed on... these strike me as painfully tacky, but it's all subjective. I guess it depends on the picture used for the cake, but I'm still not sure...

Birthday presents - not a flipping clue. She's mentioned about those spa day/sauna treatment type things. I bought tickets to see basement jaxx aaages ago, which just so happens to be on the day after her birthday.

I also managed to get 2 tickets to see Take:That on 8th of june - she went mental when I told her... starting to wish I'd saved them for a b'day present now (see, I'm not very good at planning surprises as I don't think far enough ahead).

Can anyone help me out with advice/ideas plz?

Oh and as for the likes of YC who's prolly gonna call me a poof re: takethat or numpty for basement jaxx, feel free to leave a load of abuse on my profile wall. I'm keeping this thread strictly on topic
:smt032

thanks in advance!

anything is possible Paul. Me and my mum kept a secret for weeks from my dad. His face was a picture when I turned up for his birthday, on his holiday 300 miles away :-)
I'm sure if they like the idea, then they'll make it possible, rather than you picking them up and hiding them under the stairs for the day ;-)

sometimes its not exciting things that are important. My dad said me being there and making the effort to ride there all on my tod, was he best birthday present anyone could have given him. The happy tears welling in the crner of his eye said it all really. ;-)

Could they maybe spend the afternoon in York? and book an early meal so they dont have to hang around too long? Then you can turn up to meal and ask for table, then recognise them from distance... if that makes sense... Nice surprise I reckon. :)

Spa day type thing would be good too if you can get your OH out in the morning, that lets you go to pick up the parents.

100% agree with this. My friends threw me a surprise bday party for my just gone 21st (in my kitchen), apparently they had it organised 3 weeks and I didn't suspect a darn thing. The fact they'd gone to all the effort of putting on a little spread on the table and balloons and stuff (plus clubbing together to get me a half day with birds of prey) was enough, I had a job keeping the tears away!

I expect you have a bit more cash to do a proper surprise job but tbh Paul, I should think it doesn't matter what you do, your lady will be happy, especially if it really does surprise her! Those basement jaxx tickets sound great, bet she'll be chuffed. As for the spa day that sounds great too but would you have to organise it for her and a friend or would you go along too :-P

P.S. If YC calls you a poof I'll make him regret it :smt045:p

hmmm, I'll have a word with her parents when they come down for the weekend and see if they're up for a bit of a surprise party. Neither of them drive and they're down this weekend & the following weekend for the bbq, so I doubt they'll be up for trekking all the way down just for one night (vicky's mum is a full on worrier/faffer... big train journeys are a nightmare for her).

As for having more cash than thou maria - LOL - booked a week in italy for us both and then took the car for a service = shock horror £550 repair bill including a rear wheel bearing amongst other bits... £40 a month for the svThou doesn't seem such a good deal now that I'm well & truly skint  If I'd seen the shocking bill coming and realised how much the holiday was going to set us back, I'd have just stuck with my trusty 650 but these things happen I guess...

I'm not focusing so much on spending a fortune on material things, but struggling to think of little bits and pieces, which, when added together in the form of a surprise, all make for a very nice treat... and I'm rubbish lol

How about an iPod nano with birthday greetings from everyone she knows on it?? Might need a bit of help getting some people to record .mp3 files but it's cheap and effective.

looks like it's going to have to be the dinosaur after all - about 10 of her mates have just announced they aren't coming from middlesbrough anymore and "Can't you just delay your birthday for later in the year?"

complete set of cnuts if you ask me, vic's well upset about it :( I've just rang about 10 people who are still coming to the main bbq, but to try and arrange a suprise dinner at a restaurant for next wedenesday. 9 didn't answer and the only one who did, answered the phone and shouted "I'll call you back", only to slam the phone down.

Is it just me or is trying to arrange stuff always this hard work?

well it sounds like 10 people have already written the bbq off (and that was meant to be 30+ in terms of numbers), so just scraping a small gathering of friends together midweek considering they'll have to drive from middlesbrough or west yorkshire to York is going to be quite an acheivement lol... just seems like so many of her friends are a bit complacent about it all. "can't you just delay your birthday til later in the year" or "No, I don't want to drive 40 mins from boro to york for your 25th birthday, its too much effort"..

pretty shiite to be honest :(

Does it HAVE to be midweek? im guessing her birthday is in the week but you guys could do something special together and then have a BIG SUPRISE party at the weekend? more people may would be more willing to turn up? I was lucky as treacles birthday fell on a sat this year but thats what i would have done mate :)

that's exactly the problem - the big bonkers birthday bash bonanza type thing has been planned for the saturday for about 6-8 weeks, which is why 30+ people were meant to be turning up. I'm still not quite sure why all of her supposedly good friends/ex-work colleagues have decided they all can't be bothered coming on the saturday now.

To try and make up for the disappointment, the surprise is the fact that on her birthday (wednesday 29th) it'll appear that it's just her & me going for dinner, but there'll be a few of her closest friends lurking in the restaurant...

getting wound up about how people can be so lazy or selfish or generally not give a sh*t... the number of times I've driven 100-200 miles to show my face at a mates birthday/other special occaision, then there's these lot who've known about it for nearly 2 months + it's literally 45 minutes down the road... and then they all turn around and say "well, I don't want to drive or get a minibus together or get the train so I can't be ars3d anymore"... rubbish people

anywho, I'm ranting now lol. Hope everyones having a nice day & thanks for all/any advice :)
