problem
riding to work minding my own business like usuall on my 99 curvy the engine felt good for once then about 10 miles out of my 15 mile journey
the bike suddenly coughed and sputtered but never cut out but it lost 80% of its power it would not rev past 7k and its acceleration is next to nothing like it was in a saftey mode of some sort. but then couple miles down the road the fuel light has come on so on the way home i'll top up with fuel and see if that changes anything. then then the investigation will start. |
Re: problem
Might be best to check both cylinders are running.
Could be a loose or bad connection to your front plug? I managed to knock a little wire out of my coil and this caused the front cylinder to not fire. Eirther that or could be a worn wire somewhere in the loom? |
Re: problem
Indeed sounds like the "running on one" problem, the cause however could be any number of things, apart from that mentioned above, you may have water/cr@p in the tank (given the age of the bike), so check the filler cap overflow pipe isn't blocked/ broken inside the tank.
But more likely to be a rubbed wire somewhere or water under the front plug. Cheers Mark. |
Re: problem
You hadn't left the choke on had you ?

Re: problem

i pulled the choke completly out of the carbs it popped and farted continueally but reved how it should at about 1400rpm but then the rev counter started searching so pushed them back in and it settled i need this bike for work i havent got the time or money for the bike to ****in around :( |
Re: problem
fitted a new choke cable and new spark plugs still problems not resolved yet! i'll post pics when i get a chance but te front is quite black while the rear is black around the side and the top probe bit is white.
also the bike back fires when the choke if on aswell if that helps at all. just the tank to lookin to then i'm stuck. |

Re: problem
it is only running on 1 and a bit cylinder i have a poor spark to the front cylinder
i need to repair it quick. easyist way to see if it is the ht lead or the coil? and what coils would fit on to the sv as new coils are 83quid! |
Re: problem
sould be easyier than that mate new spark good clean of the plug area (get out all the crap and water) i had the same problem on mine but after the clean and a fender extender she runs sweet as a nut now, also try upping the idle speed for a week or so (helped with mine) it just the wee disc on the right hand side of the engine just below the bikini fairing
turn it clock wise to up it anti to lower |
Re: problem
also make sure the ht leads a fully seated and not loose at all
hth |
Re: problem
it has a fender exstender on her already. and when i got her her tick over was about 1k over what it should be so i'll give it a go and see what happens
thanks dave for the tips. but the spark isn't big and it is dark with the odd flash of orange which isn't right could it be a dodgy ht lead or a loose earth maybe? |
Re: problem
simple test take out you other sparkplug and stick it in if it sparks the same think earth or ht if not its just the sparkplug itself but trust me on the clean out its worth doing every 3-4 months if like me you commute in all weathers
|
Re: problem
also where u at ,maybe a friendly orger could nip down and have a look at it for you if there local
|
Re: problem
ok hope it works i'll give it a go in a mo, i dont fancy spending 85 squids
i live in the deepest darkes of eltham |
Re: problem
ok i think i have a dodgy ht lead
i took the coils off swapped them around checked them good nice bright blue sparks from both plugs with the wires not stretched at all, put the bike back together still the same problem so checked the plugs with the bike more intact the rear is nice and bright but with the front ht lead with the rad pulled out the way and testing the spark on the right of the frame it is putting out a orange spark! |
Re: problem
re checked all my ht leads and plugs i have two good sparks now i havent got a clue where to look next
what else could cause the bike not to be able to run properly????? |
Re: problem
DONE IT the bike works now i think during the back fire it disloged the carbs slightly and gave it an air leak
put a stainless oval ccc exhaust on though i have to get a decent clamp for it atm it look like the previous owner used a scaffold pole!! many thanks for the advice from the ppl on here though ! :) |
