TLW down:(

Those of you on MM09 will already know but I managed to end up in a ditch

The basic gist was that I was following Drew and Hovis back to Drew's, we were going round a right hander and a car came the other way right on the white line, We all moved to the left but I managed to misjudge the corner which tightened up and dropped away, drifted wide and touched the kerb

Next thing I know there's a road sign rushing up to me, I remember the "CLANG" and then being upside down in the ditch next to the bike, it ****ing oil over itself

It would appear the bike ran along the kerb on the lhs of the front wheel and brake disc until I hit the sign and we parted company, falling on it's LHS, the stator cover dug in and flipped the bike, to quote Drew "cartwheeling" along the verge

After hitting the sign it seems I fell forward and down and on my right thigh, ripping a hole in my leathers on the rough concrete and gouging a hole in my leg, either when it hit the ground or the signpost I broke a bone in my left hand. Other than those two I've got aches and what-not, but got away pretty well

Anyway, some photos...

The corner:

The resulting dent I left in the sign on impact:smt107

Where we ended up, note leather ripping abrasive concrete on right

Hovis looking for bits to steal:

On the trailer to come home:

BIG THANKS:

Drew and Hovis for being off the bikes and there so quick
Lily for driving out the car and taking me to hospital
The nurse who stopped and advised that my hand was likely broken
BMW driver who stopped and helped fish the bike out the hedge
Lily's brother for getting his van and taking the bike back to Drew&Lily's place
Drew and Lily again for the food/bed/painkillers
All the guys who showed up at A&E to pick me up after midnight, and bringing me a beer
My Dad for driving my car + trailer all the way up today to get me

Damage is pretty extensive if superficial, frame/swingarm/forks appear straight, a none exhaustive list:

All bodywork scratched
Engine case smashed
Front subframe snapped
Headlamp unit scratched and broken
Front wheel gouged and left hand brake disc knobbled
Brake/clutch/gear shift levers bent
Both mirrors/indys damaged

Ho hum, will get hold of the insurers on monday...

Oopsy...

I was expecting the damage to be alot worse than that, especially when I saw the bike in the ditch.

Best of luck with the recovery.

Couldn't believe what Drew was telling me when I called him... and you sounded so calm too. Don't suppose the car stopped??? Sad about your mashed bike, but as ever glad that you're here to tell the tale:D

Hope your hand and leg heal up quick.

Thanks dude, the docs said the gash on my leg will take 4-6weeks to heal, got an appointment with the fracture clininc on tuesday to see how long i'll be in plaster...

The photos don't really do the damage justice, the engine case really is smashed, half of the LHS cover is missing and the rest is bent into the rotor, presumably while it was still running:(

6 - 8 weeks I expect thats how long they told me I would be in plaster when I broke my radius at the left wrist joint.

You have my sympathies...

Bloody hell me old fruit, you could have ended up decapitated from hitting that beast, so its a shame you did not put some money on the EuroMillions.

Glad your ok, and the bike looks like its hardly got a scratch , although its hard to tell on black bikes.

(Some pics of the trumpet next to the household waste sign next time ;):p)

possibly, gravel in the engine will probably see to that, plus expensive plastics...

try to buy it back and rebuild the engine myself for a track bike perhaps, or just part out the good bits...

Those 675's crash well then! An SV cartwheeling would be a write-off! I can barely see any damage on yours TLW!

I hope you heal quickly fella!!

Drew Carey 09-05-09 09:24 PM

Re: TLW down:(

Deffo a right off, when the bike was on it's side in the van all the casings came out and it looked like it probably would have mashed up the insides. So would mean a total engine re build on top of the body work and front sub frame damage.

Ouch at that road sign! Real shame about the bootiful bike, looking very sorry for itself. Yet another shining example of the good hearts of the .org (and their family members ;-)), really hope you recover most speedily #hug#! That rough tarmac looks horrid too :-(

Sorry to hear it TLW , main thing is you are relatively unscathed mate, GWS

Re: TLW down:(

10 points for having a spectacular one!

Shame about the bike, personally I'd stick a new side cover on it, flush the cases, change the oil and see if it sounds f##ked when you start it.

If it sounds alright then jobs a gud un and you can keep your NCD

sorry to hear of your ditch diving, good to hear you made an escape and hope you get your self and bike sorted soon, good pics btw.
