rider to pillion intercom
Ok. I know this should be inancillaries I suppose but.
Need comments. reccomedations on a good intercom.. rider to pillion.. need clear as a bell.. no wires - no wind noise etc. done search on here and see autocomm and star comm and blue ant come up trumps.. but which>? version, number . model.? do i need to connect something permanent to the battery with these> and sit it under the seat> do they have nice neat bluetooth "thingys" that sit on the helmet and comfy earphones.. tis all confusing.. seen Soulkiss comment and Garry in Scoootland- indepenti wotsit.. and a few others but nothing upto date lately have tried cheaper £20 stuff before and got wind noise- no ability to hear over 50 mph.. and painfull ear plugs.. I kow it an investment and want it for the scotland trip so dont mind spending £100.£150 cos tis forever I suppose.. cheers in advance links would be good. , half price offers would be good, personal experience even better- ta Q |
Re: rider to pillion intercom
Dunno about wireless doo-hahs quiff, but Starcom and Autocom have been sticking with wires for good reason - they work!
I have an Autocom system I got second hand for £80 odd and it really works well, crystal clear duplex (both can talk at same time) between rider and pillion. I don't find the wires a problem. I can find the model number if you want.... |
Re: rider to pillion intercom
Mike that would be ace..
I just need to train Mand I Suppose.. she gets off at petrol stations and walks off without disconnecting the wires.. I looked up autocom and the F1 use them and pilots etc.. so look good, blue ant do a wiresless one I heard and been trying to look it up. does it connect to yer battery then and have a 2 plug ins?? nothing clipping on a belt working off aa batteries?? somethin perm onthe bike would be fab and that duplex thing sounds good and the no wind noise.. Scotland long way with pillion and no chat. |
Re: rider to pillion intercom
scaler rider Q2, you get 2 head sets that clip to helmets flat earpieces and its bluetooth you just charge a little bit of it from mains.
http://www.handtec.co.uk/product.php?xProd=1418 you get two with it. |

My Dad and I have used them BETWEEN bikes before and they work an absolute treat. They pick up the radio, play iPods, Bluetooth to phone and TomTom Rider II. Great kit. |
Re: rider to pillion intercom
ooo now you thrown somethin in the mix !!
trouble is ya cant bloomin try em out can ya before spendin all that dosh.. |
Re: rider to pillion intercom
looks like them are 149 for one unit!!
I like the autocom cos I think it hard wires for power doesnt it>?? and its proven.. but any others I will look at. |
Re: rider to pillion intercom
Autocom 200, gives you the option to hard wire or run from 9v battery (pp3) nothing bad to say about it, yes its wired, but does exactly what it says on the tin, was half price most places as they are moving to digital or try ebay

Re: rider to pillion intercom
Hey, Quiff!
on a good intercom.. rider to pillion.. Guess you don't want a pillion > rider option, then? Does Mandy read your posts? In which case I'm ( again ) a dead man! |
Re: rider to pillion intercom
autocom active duo (or its current equivalent) would be a good bet. can be hard wired into the loom or you can use a 9v battery. Can be expanded for mp3, phone, gps and bike to bike
Can thoroughly reccomend www.chainspeed.co.uk if you do decide to go for it. you can also get a two part power lead so you can detach it from the bike. |
Re: rider to pillion intercom
Quiff mine is an Active-7 smart. Quite an old unit but works 100% (and was a bargain second hand!) It runs off the bike battery, using a connector that links to my Optimate lead that is connected to the battery. I only plug it in when using it and most of the time it sits in a drawer at home.
The leads are quite long enough for you to get off the bike before disconnecting. |
Re: rider to pillion intercom
I run an Autocom 300 Pro Duo AVI , cannot fault it at triple figure speeds and the best thing is that I have mine connected to my Optimate flylead so it`s removeable ...... don`t want it going with the bike if an accident occurs , these breakers would scavenge that off right away . And when you stop you can tell Mandy "Don`t forget to unplug Love" over the intercom :)
I have MP3 running on it as well as Satnav and a Bluetooth Dongle for phone calls , I only run this system on big jaunts on Motorways to be honest , if it`s a rideout then I just have Bluetooth for the phone in case we lose anyone :) |
Re: rider to pillion intercom
why would you want to talk to your pillion :)
|
Re: rider to pillion intercom
Cheers all..
I am at a "make me an offer" stage on an autocom 300 duo at moment- but would have to fit it myself and no guarantee. contemplating ordering direct off autocom- they only in warwick.. riding over and theyfit it to the bike and the helmets etc and we are all guaranteed. That said- dropping on a cheap second hand one would be ace I know my mp3 on random would plug in .. shame cant get radio I love radio 2. never ridden with music on b4 though.. and I question if a radio would keep signal as youmoved aroun the country etc. so - still a quandry.. Mike appreciate you looking up what it is.. I suppose I dont have to hard wire it in eh I know they run off a pp3 dont they too.. |

Re: rider to pillion intercom
Another vote for Autocom - I have used the same Autocom Active Rider kit for the last 7 or 8 years or so on my SV650, SV1000 & Sprint.
Fitting is, as Mike suggested, a piece of p155 - especially if you have room under the seat. Just needs a switched live (tail light is a good option) to splice in to, connect the -ve to the battery, route the mike leads, fit the speakers and mikes in the helmets (this is probably the hardest bit - not difficult, just takes a bit of time to get it right). Works great, even at almost twice the limit - can also connect MP3 & Satnag if needed. Autocom quite often have half price sales when they bring out new models, which I think they are just about to do..... |

I've sometimes wished I had one on the bike, but 10% of the time it'd be useful, and 90% of the time it'd be used to tell me I was going too fast... or leaning to far... or she needed the loo... or her ar$e was sore... or her hands were cold... or her chinstrap was too tight... How many arguments have you had in the car? Now you can have them on the bike too? No way Jose! |
Re: rider to pillion intercom
I like the screaming you get in the intercom when you go for a "brave" move :)
"Eeeeeeeee NO NO NO Jesus that was close" "Relaaaaaaaaax it`s all part of the fun" :) |
Re: rider to pillion intercom
The silence could be deafening................or she fell off :)

Re: rider to pillion intercom
Dave, I have an autocom and im contemplating selling it. Used it twice, and is in as new cond. Would have to find out what model it is but I do remember it being the middle of the range one.

Re: rider to pillion intercom
Rob you sir have a pm

Re: rider to pillion intercom
As a rule, are these systems OK for use with ear plugs?
Don't fancy getting deafened by both wind noise and extra 'ear ache' |
Re: rider to pillion intercom
me has read up on em and you can still wear ear plugs and they have a snazzy noise reduction somethin or other so u dont get wind noise off the mic in your ears and such.. its crystal clear apparently..

Re: rider to pillion intercom
At the moment it seems like they are currently going through a transition period where all the half price old stock has gone and all the new units are not in stock yet.
|
