Anyone else read reviews and sometimes think?
...what the hell!?
Ive read some reviews where people have reviewed bikes and make stupid remarks imo. They say things like; "the suspension doesnt feel right" or worse it has a negative effect like running wide... Now with me playing with my own suspension I know the MASSIVE difference setting it up can have on many different situations. I know the standard of the suspension fitted is the ultimate limitation, but in most situations I believe (as long as its adjustable) you can make the ride at least decent! One in particular that annoyed me was someone on a 1098. He said it was running wide quite a lot and wouldnt keep a line. I can tell you that can be caused by the suspension being set wrong VERY easily. I have made that happen through both front and back settings when playing about and testing and both times it was EASILY dialled back out. Im wondering why these "professional" testers dont seem to know these basics!? Shocking really... Anyone else noticed anything like this before that got them a little unhappy before? |
Re: Anyone else read reviews and sometimes think...
I have always maintained that instead of adding extra HP the money is better spent on upgrading your suspension, even spending 30quid getting it properly set up for your weight and the types of road you ride can vastly improve your riding

Re: Anyone else read reviews and sometimes think...
not to keen on some of the 'road testers reports', a lot of them compare and rate the handling of a sports tourer with a full on sports bike.

Hey suzsv650 is the one that spotted it! ...And Don't think I'm paying for the postage.
Out of interest what do reviewers say about the 650's susppension? Only reviewI've really read on it is where an (mcn?) reviewers takes it on the track pretty much as stock and wins. The article smacked of BS anyway but I don't recall them mentioning the mass slopping. |
Re: Anyone else read reviews and sometimes think?
Oh I see... I didnt notice what he was on about. lol I is tired. :(
Anyway, the SV's suspension isnt bad but isnt good. It does the job. Since you cant alter it really though it doesnt matter about what they think, there is nothing they can do about it lol. Basically the SV does what it needs to :) |

Re: Anyone else read reviews and sometimes think?
What you have to bear in mind it that magazines exist to sell magazines not to keep the reader informed. If you see double or multi page adverts for Yamsuaki and their new XYZR1000RRRR you can bet it's never going to be slated in a road test.
I remember a while ago reading a test on a Honda (probably CBR6 or fireblade) where they mentioned a fueling amongst other things and thinking "I'm sure I already read a test on this bike and they never mentioned that" so I dug through my pile of mag's and hey presto about 4 months earlier, same mag, same bike they not only didn't mention any fuelling issues but praised it for its fueling! What changed? Also the UK press don't know how to test anything but sports bikes, if they do test anything else they always compare it to one. It's ok for them they don't have to buy the things and run them day in day out. |

Another issue, same guy: "The suspension was feeling a bit rubbish, so I fitted and Elka rear shock (as you do). It wasn't feeling too great so I took it to the local tuners and they found my perfect settings straight away" The guy is clearly an idiot. |
Re: Anyone else read reviews and sometimes think?
Can't complain about description of suspension in paticular, consistancy is an issue though, guess it depends on which magazine. Does anybody else ever read a comment though (suspension excepted 'cos the SV's truly is awful and gets quickly worse as the bike gets older), I'm talking about fuelling glitches, or notchy gearboxes, false neutrals, buzzy mirrors taht become useless at speed, and think "hang on - you guys are testing a 9 grand bike! How come my 4 grand SV doesn't suffer from any of this stuff, and youb are just accepting it as if it's part of every bike, a minor irritation". Most of those issues would drive me nuts.

Re: Anyone else read reviews and sometimes think?
Yea fair ones you two... I do notice they say that about false neutrals and things quite a lot and often think the same thing as you ralph. Heh. Makes you wonder dont it. Wonder if the Desmo has that issue

Re: Anyone else read reviews and sometimes think?
the ones that get me are the kit reviews. dint leak, comf, blah blah
cost: £more than you can think of ever spending cos journo got given it as bung from the manufacturer |
Re: Anyone else read reviews and sometimes think?
Who cares, most kit will be waterproof straight out of the box, 10k miles down the line is a different story.
As for leathers, they review a suit and say it has good fit... are we all the same size? They praised the ears off a dianese jacket that my mate had, and the arm ripped nearly off in a ****y little lowside. Reviews, I take them as entertaining reading but wouldn't buy a bike on the strength of it's reviews, because you're never going to tell the truth about someone who's paying you a big wedge. |
