help, lost my only bike key!
I last used my sv for work friday, came in put the key down on the table. i noticed saturday it had moved, so probably one of my 2 kids picked it up,( 2 any 4 yr old) get to late monday night and thinking work tomorrow and cant fin my only key. Ive hunted everywhere, but looks like its gone. I dont have a spare, or the tag with the key number on it, and my owners handbook hasnt had the details filled in. Is there any way I can find the key numbers? i rung my local suzuki stealers, who said if I remove a lock they can get it sent off to match up a key, but ideally I need a quicker method, and something not too expensive as Im trying to get my car back on the road too. Thanks, Lee Oh yeah, its an `01 curvy. |
Re: help, lost my only bike key!!!
Have you got the rider's handbook?
Are you the first owner? Was the key number written into the handbook? There's a box for the number on page 15, but someone has to write it in. |
Re: help, lost my only bike key!!!
Stop looking, it'll turn up I bet. It always happens that way eh?

Re: help, lost my only bike key!!!
Don't want to worry you but when my daughter was 18 months old she "planted" my car keys in the garden and I didn't find them for two years! Thankfully the week before I'd been out to get two copies made at Mr Minit as we only got the one key from the previous owner - boy was I lucky!!!
That doesn't really help you does it? Sorry. |
Re: help, lost my only bike key!!!
You have the V5? If so....call a locksmith that deos vehicle locks.....there are loads of mobile locksmiths around that can come out and sort you a new key. I had it happen with my car once and it took about an hour and cost £80 but I ended up with two new keys.
It was tricky because I didn't have the numbers needed either so it tooks lots of phonecalls by the locksmith and so on until it was all sorted and his little machine set the key up to work the alarm and immobiliser. All sorted......time to get your yellow pages out!!! HTH x |
Re: help, lost my only bike key!!!
I had to phone my daughter on holiday in Malaysia to ask where she had hidden my bike key. The cow wanted me to do some work for her and hid the key to stop me playing out and forgot to put it back.

Lucky suzuki does not use immobiliser pickup like h*nda does!

Re: help, lost my only bike key!!!
I never had a number tag with my GS500.
A dealer said Suzuki do not know the key numbers and you can not identify it with the barrel. Any way doesnt matter to me about a spare key as my barrel is knackered you can take the key out with the engine running. I need to save up for a full set as I don't want one key for the ignition and one key for the tank. |
Re: help, lost my only bike key!!!
It's possible to take two or three different locks and make them all operated by one key, depends how mechanically minded you are. I've done it on a couple of bikes before.
All you do is take the barrels out, remove the pins[1], swap them round until with the key in the barrel is smooth and re-assemble. Helps if you have a spare broken lock though for spare 'pins'. Druid [1] Actually they're plates rather than pins in the case of the SV. |
Re: help, lost my only bike key!!!
Unfortunately Im not the first owner, although I do have the owners handbook, but no one ever filled in those details on page 15, I looked in each language in the book. The service book has colour code, frame number etc, but no key number, even phoned the supplying dealer in sussex, but they didnt make a note of it.
Ive spoken to my local stealers, orwells in ipswich and if I take the ignition in to them, they will post it off to a locksmith they use and for £40 i`ll have a new key, but will have to wait a week or so. Its probably the easiest and cheapest option really, saves me having to remove the tank and pillion locks, and i`ll get it sorted. i did try a local auto locksmith, but he never got back to me, so assume he cant do it. Was the only vehicle locksmith I could find listed locally. Ive given up finding it now as Im either hiding it more by turfing through everything or just getting fed up because ive been so stupid not getting a spare cut sooner. Lee |

I think I saw silica ones on ebay, I bought a key at a Honda dealer years ago and it was a silica (thought i was getting a genuine Honda stamped key) was ok. |

Good for you! I lost my only key a while back.. I went mad! Turned out it fell out of my pocket when I was driving my car back from the garage and it ran away and hid beneath the seat... Made a copy as soon as I found it again |
Re: help, lost my only bike key!
Thanks for the replies regarding getting a spare cut, we have 1 key place in the town I live in, got to be worth a try, was fantastic using the bike for work today, even in the crap weather.
And yeah Im going to get 2 spares done :D |
Re: help, lost my only bike key!
For future reference, you can change all the locks on an SV without the key- the tank lock is pretty effortless to break with a screwdriver. (the ignition on the carbed one is similiarly pathetic, even before it wears out, which it does quite fast- the injected one might be better) So, if you lose all your keys the fastest way to fix might just be to buy a used lockset for about £20 off ebay.

Re: help, lost my only bike key!
You know, reading through all the advice about how to get around not having a key, kinda makes you realize just how easy a bike is nickable if they can take it to a garage.. Makes me think about getting some more security for my bike
