Really Fluffing angry at Dentists who are evil!
I have just been to the Dentist. I am a severe Dental-phobic and it takes a lot to get me there, Carol has to have time off work and she has to pretty much kick me out from under the duvet and away from my cuddly bear to get me out of the door, often while I am still sulking and refusing to wake up. :(
Last trip, they repaired a broken tooth and put me through an ordeal because my regular Dentist was away and the guy who replaced her had all the charm of a venereal disease. This time my Dentist was back and she forces me into the chair and takes a look. The tooth they repaired last time has chipped away a little more. It offers me no pain (until she poked it with a spike and now it hurts like Feck!) and is just in need of a little filling. I knew this in advance and booked an extended appointment to allow for this. :smt090 Only, no she will not repair my tooth. It needs a crown. A crown is £200, which I cannot afford. My other options are to have it filled or removed. She laughs and says why not just bring in my benefit book and I will get it done for free. I am not on benefit of any kind and despite going to the CAB for help a few weeks ago, I am not entitled to benefits of any kind. So my options are to have it filled. Only she cannot do it today because she is too busy. My extended appointment does not mean anything because she is actually rather busy... Er so why did I bother to book an extended appointment? She could not answer that, but claimed that she wanted to clean my teeth a little more and felt that as a Phobic I would not return to have it done on another day. I have not missed an appointment yet, despite my fear. :smt079 So I am dismissed from the chair as if I was an annoying child and told that I must come back another time. Two weeks time in fact, because I can't just book a day off from work in short notice for a simple filling. Then to add insult to injury, I am told that I must pay £46 today for my inspection and filling. A filling I have not yet had! =; I hate Dentists, they are vile. I hope that Dentists all go Hell, where they are pulled apart by Demons of the foulest order and tortured for eternity. I hate Dentists, not sure if I mentioned that. :smt077 |

Re: Really Fluffing angry at Dentists who are evil!
A filling on the NHS should cost no more than £46.40 for everything, from start to finish.
If they just took some X-Rays and a simple inspection today you are not required to pay any more than £16.50 for the checkup and the remaining amount is due on completion of the filling. It is always a good idea to get a complete receipt for what you have paid for, I know too many people who have had to dispute their bills from dentists after being charged twice. And yes, they are all disgusting cretins and should burn ;) |

Re: Really Fluffing angry at Dentists who are evil!
Well... I say all... Maybe there are 1 or 2 nice ones but I've yet to meet any...
My dentist doesn't actually seem to notice that the mouth he's working on is attached to someones face, and does indeed hurt when pulled really, really hard. :( |
Re: Really Fluffing angry at Dentists who are evil!
If you can't get NHS I know the Dental Hospital at the University might be seeking new patients. Nothing to be afeared of any more than a normal dentist.

Re: Really Fluffing angry at Dentists who are evil!
Sounds like new dentist reqd.
The last dentist I saw, May 1982, suggested I have all my teeth removed. I asked him to fill the three he thought needed some work on. 27 years later, and virtually no problems during that period. I'm just about needing some treatment but I need to finish the vodka and valium first. Totally phobic about dentists |
Re: Really Fluffing angry at Dentists who are evil!
aye there all bams except when your rolling around the floor with a jaw the shape of a rugby ball and your face is throbbing like a hard-0n-who do you go and see to get fixed?.
I used to hate going pretty much the same as you but when it got to the stage where a grown man was bubbling on the floor in his mums arms i decided enough is enough and found my B0LL0CK5 |
Re: Really Fluffing angry at Dentists who are evil!
Does rather sound like time for a new one. After one of those peel-me-off-the-ceiling moments when the (NHS) dentist I saw as a kid found a nerve whilst being distracted by his nurse showing him someone else's x-rays I did not go again for over 20 years.
Finally plucked up the courage and went again when I got dental cover with a new employer and went private. Suddenly I was the centre of attention, things were explained, the dentist was not rushing between three rooms (one in action, one in prep, one recovering), and it was remarkably civil. I'm now remarkably relaxed about the experiences and had no problems when a very old filling had to be replaced last year needing my first ever oral injection. |

Re: Really Fluffing angry at Dentists who are evil!
Last year I spent the guts of £300 on root treatment on a molar. I remember the third session, the dentist said, it's ok, the root is dead now, you do not need numbed.......so he stuck the wee scrapy thing in the tooth and AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAARGH!!!
I jumped out of the chair...to which he said.."are you feeling some pain?" So then when it was apparently finished and filled, I went to work and later on I bought a bag of chips. I started to chew a chip and the pain was so bad I thought, and so did everyone else, I was going to pass out. Tried to get an emergency appointment but they refused to give meone!! JOKE! And I pay £15 a month private fees for the priviledge. |

I used to totally dread going to the dentist, not helped by a previous bad experience, and even managed to avoid it completely for 7 years at one point. However going private recently has changed my my opinion of dentists completely - the time taken, environment and approach mean that it is a totally different experience. Not saying that there aren't great dentists on the NHS, but they don't always get the time to put people at ease, etc. It is a bit more expensive but actually not that much more than some NHS places, and in the long run me going regularly will hopefully save money on more expensive treatments further down the line. Jayne I hope you get your tooth sorted, and rmemeber that you have the choice about where you go, so try somewhere else until you find someone you like and trust. It makes such a difference! |
Re: Really Fluffing angry at Dentists who are evil!
Jayne i agree with you all dentists are vile i need to go for a check up and a hygienst appointment - dreading both of them the hygienist will cost me 40 quid!!! i hate it i am clinging on ceiing for dear life when i go there :(

Re: Really Fluffing angry at Dentists who are evil!
I pays the money to go private, dont care how much it costs, its worth it.
Always relaxed, plenty of discussion and explanation, most of all - no fear. |
Re: Really Fluffing angry at Dentists who are evil!
I've been with NHS dentists all my life. I recently moved and registered with a different dentist to the practise I've been with four the past 20 years or so. In all cases, I've never had any issues whatsoever.
Just goes to show that as with everything in life, you can't tar everyone in a particular group with the same brush... |

I haven't been to the dentist since I've lived in the UK (nearly 2 years now). Back home (Canada) I've had the same dentist my entire life (check up every 6-9 months). He's awesome. He's also English: When I told him I was moving to the UK he warned me "Do not let them work on your teeth". That was good enough for me -barring any emergencies I'll stick to cleanings and go see him again when I'm back for a visit :D

Re: Really Fluffing angry at Dentists who are evil!
If this was a booked appt then she should have put the filling in end of... are you saying that she hasn`t even put a temorary filling in?? If so and you are still in pain book an emergency appt tomor and go back.
Think carefully about the crown.... would the absence of a tooth show if it is removed? I`m only saying that because for the past 3 years I`ve had nothing but abcesses and trouble with my crown and I`ve had to have 2 operations in hospital as a result of poor dentistry (in my opinion). My choice now is to have a new crown or the tooth removed and i`m opting to have it removed. Having said that the last 2 appts. I made have been cancelled by the dentist at short notice so i`m left in pain and swallowing pain killers and can`t have the tooth removed til December now. Best of luck with your treatment |
Re: Really Fluffing angry at Dentists who are evil!
Thank you every one for your kind words and good advice. :D
To dispel the feelings of rage and anguish I jumped on my little bike and took a ride over to my local climbing venue for a couple of technical boulder problems. From there and once my fingers were shot, I went exploring the locality and clocked up about forty miles. I am so getting ready for my test, although nearly turning onto the M5 was a bit of a fright! Luckily I was able to pull over and change lane when the traffic was clear. I wish they would make those signs a little clearer by Burnham on Sea! |
