Anyone who's done their own spray painting.
OK Im a total NOOOOB with this stuff, only this lunch time I found out that air-brush and spray paint are different things. Before I decide if this is something I actually a serious option I need to know the do's and donts etc so...
I want advice from those on here, who with out proper training have done some spray painting of plastics etc? The tips/tricks/methods anything and everything from your experiance. Oh and a good place to buy a decent yet low cost compressor etc would be great too. |

PM Wideboy - He's been spraying a bit recently.

Re: Anyone who's done their own spray painting.
Aldi sometimes have compressors etc, not sure of quality though, but I'd guess they'd be OK for someone who's starting out.

you need to make sure the compressor gives oil free air, otherwise that can ruin paint. Not sure if you can get inline filters or anything like that, or whether its just down to the compressor

From memory, SVRory sprays for a living.

Also it gives me the excuse to get the compressor that I want for the airtools. Im hoping to get back into Enduro racing once the credit crunch favours me a bit more so I'll be doing loads of monkey work then lol. |

And what does spraying have to do with enduros? Plastics on enduros are never painted, just replaced  |
Re: Anyone who's done their own spray painting.
Yeah I re-wrote it cos my rush of a fist reply really didnt make much sense.
I meant the compressor will be handy for the airtools, not that the skill of painting will be handy for enduros. I wouldnt think people really care about appearance with enduro the mud surley makes a paint job redundant anyway lol. |
Re: Anyone who's done their own spray painting.
Prep, prep, prep.
Prep must be 100% flawless or the paint will just show it up better;). Tack cloth or similar prior to paint. Primer, light sand before top coat. Lots of thin coats, dont try and get good coverage straight away Always clear coat everything afterwards as it protects and shines better. Getting air pressure, paint flow right takes practice and its not easy. Too much air pressure will result in orange peel effect. Please note, Im not an expert, just done a bit for myself with decent results. Phil |
