Brake overhaul, what bits?
 
Hiya,

I'm doing my Christmas list and as you'd expect with just picking up a curvy in need of some TLC the list consists completely of bike bits.

something I fancy doing as the front brake are poo is to do a complete brake overhaul but am unsure what parts I need to do it. I'd like braided hoses front and back and new pads so can you recommend some good but cost conscious ones. In addition looking at the wemoto they have the following:

Bleed Nipple
Pads Retaining Pin and Clip Set
Banjo Bolts for Callipers and master cylinders - Stainless

How many of the above would I need for both front and rear?

I assume that I wont know if I need seals etc until I started work? The brakes work they are just rather rubbish on the front.

HEL are alright. You can get any colour of lines if so inclined.

You will not know if you need pistons/seals until you get them out.

Thinking of doing the same at some point. How do you know if the pistons/seals need replacing?

If the seals are a mess and the pistons are massively pitted and won't clean up at all...they need to be replaced ;)

get stainless bleed nipples if you are replacing them (4 for the whole bike)

s/s hoses and fittings: 2 race hoses front and a third if you're bothering with the back. a banjo bolt for each caliper and a double banjo bolt for the mastercylinder (front). Can't say I've ever swapped the rear so don't know what the connection to the rear mastercylinder is)

copper crush washers

red rubber grease

new fluid

brake/carb cleaner

There are two seals/piston. The outer is a dust seals and tends to be eaten by sticking to the piston over time.

I would suggest that as you are intending to remove the existing hoses, stop.


remove calipers from bike, remove pads. gently squeeze lever to push out pistons. If one is sticking use a bit of wood and G clamps to restrain the one that moves whilst gently pulling on lever to push out the sticky piston. once you have the pistons out, disconnect the hoses.

Rear, is a pig to remove retaining pins if they have not been previously maintained.

Erm, 4 if you have a curvey, it has 2 on the rear caliper

nope - I ordered the bits just over a week ago and they have turned up along with some new fork springs so I have in a box in the dinning room:

front and rear braided hoses
new pads for the front
new fluid
bolts and cooper washers
THREE lol stainless bleed nipples (my fault for guessing and not looking)
but no red grease

Now all I need is:

A: the balls to give it a go myself and not do it wrong and kill myself on the first ride
B: Pay someone to do it after Christmas

You shouldn't have a problem just engage brain and take it easy, there's a few threads (pretty recent) on getting the pistons out and cleaning them up and even more threads on bleeding up the brakes. The inbetween part is just cleaning your calipers, peeling out your seals, cleaning some more and inserting some greased up new seals. (you can also pull the calipers apart ; the bit that bolts onto your forks and the piston housing goo idea to degunk and regrease the shaft)
