Can I ask why you can't ride??

Re: i miss it..

I SORN'ed mine at the end of October for a maintenance strip down, and haven't got space in the garage to get to work on it, so I bought a shed, then it rained for weeks solid, and last weekend I laid the slabs for the shed base, next weekend hopefully it will be dry enough to build the shed, then I can get it sorted and taxed again.

IN SHORT I FEEL YOUR PAIN! Being without a bike to ride is a PITA!

Nah, if I buy a second bike it will be a traillie, something that can carry me down to the Pyrenees or into Spain/Portugal then do a bit of light off-roading on mountain trails and unclassified dirt roads.

A 2003 XT600 can be picked up from about £1200 on ebay or £1500 in a dealer. I like an XT660 but that needs a budget of about £2-2500, and I'm not sure I want to spend that much.

These are cheap, but that extra few hundred quid seems to get you a much newer bike

I miss it sometimes.

The individuality.

The naughtiness.

The ability to park so close to places.

The noise.

The vibe.

The corner speed.

The rear wheel slide on a wet day into a corner.

The very small margin for error.

Then I do think, maybe next summer, it's too cold at the mo.

Maybe not give up just cut down, or maybe try cheaper prostitutes.

Exactly. You want something enough, you sacrifice other things.

My dad doesn't drink, or smoke, or waste money on anything. He'll take his own food on day trips instead of paying £5 for a mank burger.

Result?
Concourse Condition Kawasaki Z900
Concourse condition Honda CBX1000Z
Benelli Tornado LE
A very nice car.

And he works for the NHS earning bugger all per year before you say he must earn loads, he just puts his money to good use. He hardly earns anything.

Bearing in mind, i have a part time job and am a student, pumping most of my money into living, books, equipment and running the bike as it is. I can't forefit anything anywhere near enough to afford a second bike in the next five or so years.

Everyone's situation is different. Can't beleive this has turned to this, after a lighthearted comment.

Turned into what? This is a discussion?

What we're saying is, if you want something enough, you WILL find a way.

You're right, i'm sorry. Ignore that.

In my situation, short of getting a loan/selling a lot of my current possessions/assets (the bike) i would not be able to get another bike, let alone a second bike. As stated i struggle to support the one bike as it is.

Different people, different situations. As said, i'm a student with a part time job to cover as much of my costs as possible, without slipping further into debt for the time being.

Maybe in a few years when i have a full time job and am in a position to afford yearly holidays etc i will definately choose the bike over a trip to some sunny country. For example this year i already worked my ass off over summer to have enough money to tour France on the bike with some good friends.

I hear ya. Im a student too, my bike is pretty much what all my spare goes on, I dont drink that much, i dont smoke etc etc. Having said that im skint again since ive had to rebuild mine after crashing it. Even though i came off late October the damn thing still isnt finished and im begining to get withdrawal symptoms... I swear im developing a facial twitch. But should be well since im planning a trip through Europe on it in the summer once my exams are finally done :D

Re: I miss riding.

I haven't ridden for about two months now due to a combination of factors. I do miss it, although at this time of year I can give or take it. It would never happen in the summer.

Binky, I think it's admirable that you keep that bike going as a student, especially given how much you must spend on petrol going on rideouts etc. Although I guess your fuel economy must be good with your slow pace and all... :)

Re: I miss riding.

I was a student, i worked silly hours and modified my car. I got into debt to buy it, and got even further into debt by modifying it.

Out the other end of that tunnel now and more into bikes..

But now my debt has gone up 10 fold by owning a house. Things do somehow work out though.

I have an overdraft with a fair bit of mullah left in it that could get me quite a nice second hand bike. But that's a whole different kettle of fish. It's still money i don't have and would have to pay back later anyway. "If you want something enough you can make it happen" wouldn't come into it at all.

Daimo 09-12-09 04:07 PM

Re: I miss riding.

I used to live in my overdraft  I spent more than I earnt

Still, twas a great life (none of this McDonalds neoned out baked bean can exhaust rubbish!!!!)

Mej 09-12-09 04:41 PM

Re: I miss riding.

i work and do the distance learning and still manage to spend all of my time in my overdraft, it sucks, but such is life and i really want a Gixxer 750!!!!!

-Ralph- 09-12-09 04:53 PM

Re: I miss riding.

Yep, when I was a student I had no money for holidays or bikes. 10 years I didn't go on holiday.

I was just happy that Tesco's had a price war and did 19p loaves of bread and 7p tins of beans!

It's not always possible to afford what you want just by changing priorities, because your on the breadline already and your funds only cover the absolute necessities as it is.

IMO you'd be foolish to buy an unnecessary second motorbike on credit, when you can't afford to repay it.
