Band round the brake fluid reservoir

See this quite a lot - but why do people do it? I've heard a number of offerings, none of them really plausible, such as:
  • in case of a spill (seems to me that if the fluid eats paintwork, it'll eat the average sock)
  • to stop UV light degrading the fluid (I didn't know brake fluid is UV sensitive - is it??)
  • to stop distracting the rider (you'd be very sad if you sat and watched the reservoir)
  • to stop it freezing (ridiculous)
  • fashion (possible)
but I'm guessing that nobody really knows.

Do you have a band on your reservoir? Why?

What does the org think?

Probably another racer style thing?
Believe racers used to use these when British singles were all the rage & vibration would shake everything so hard that fluid leapt out of the breather. The sponge muff would keep it off paintwork etc.

Because your a tart and you own a gixxer in toothpaste colours (or if you don't own a gixxer you are just a tart)

I thought it was just numptys wanting to complete the sportsbike look. However your top one might well prompt me to do it, hopefully the sock would absorb a fair bit of the fluid in a spill.

If your bike is so bashed up the fluid reservoir breaks, chances are that a bit of brake fluid damage will be fairly insignificant in the repair bill...

Apparently racers use it for reason 1 on your list. I have one (or had, it was a free one with a magazine and the elastic's gone on it now) because the racers have them.

A band?
Rubber band? eh?

oh you mean one of those kind of fabric glove things? That'll be to keep it warm then:rolleyes:Some people like to pamper their bikes a little too much.

And no I don't have one..too chav. Besides one of my reservoirs don't even have the metal clip to hold the lid on....somewhere in YCs garage I believe

Oh I have two

why? because I can really, you could argue it's for the spillage thing, but there again I'd want to make sure it wasn't leaking in the first place, and if I was using when refilling I'd remove it afterwards, or indeed the fashion for copying all things "racing", but then I don't have a camera facing passed it so the advertising angle isn't really going to work either.

Sp just a bit of cheap bling really.

Cheers Mark.

I got a black one to cover the reservoir, only cause it looks better than the white-ish/clear plastic bottle.

I know that brake fluid is hydroscopic but dont know about the UV theory.

I might tape a few sheets of bounty (or whatever it's called now)round mine.

NICE. Have you tried it wet yet! Proper barry boy that innit!

Well she was rebuilt with the intention of putting her back to being new. Shes a bit dirty at the moment. Even the downpipe lets the side down.:smt105

Re: Band round the brake fluid reservoir

A friend of mine had one - with a nice yellow happy smiley face on it.

When I asked him why it was becasue he realised he was getting angry far too much on the bike, and had taken to geeting close to hurting unthinking car drivers rather thasn just their cars.

So he looked at the fluffy cover to make himself smile. I think it worked - he just goes for the rude gesture now!!

Re: Band round the brake fluid reservoir

I thought they were for spillage, not in case of a crash or anything but when changing fluid lots, saves wrapping a towel round the res to prevent any spills.

So nobody really knows. The whole thing is bogus.

Re: Band round the brake fluid reservoir

Back in the day (80s) it was common to see bikes with a sports wrist band round the frt m/cyl resevoir. In those days it was to collect any spillages from the resevoir during racing use.

Its origins are slightly less humble than racing. In America the "Squids" (kids who ride sportsbikes) often ride in expensive trainers. They put the wrist band over their left foot to stop the gear lever marking their designer "sneakers". It lives on the reservoir when not in use.

And there , in a Nutshell , is the answer . Turning a boring looking white bit of reservoir into something that looks a little bit more interesting ........ and let`s face facts , it`s not cool to wear sweat bands around the wrist anymore so the people that make them have stayed in business by sticking Bike branded logos on them and did more sales than John McEnroe ever did for them .

So if you really wanted to give a Squid a right old bad mood then , wait for him to put his band on the reservoir and leave the bike . Nick the band , turn it inside out , smear it on the chain , turn it back the right way around and put it back on his reservoir . Imagine the Wailing and Gnashing of teeth when he removes that off his foot after the journey home and sees his Nike Airs covered in chain oil .
