Poll: How many performance parts have you purchased for your SV?

... performance mods have you purchased for your SV650.

Hi people,

I've been behind the scenes reading posts, more of a reader than a chatter, but thought to start a thread on here.

I am doing a project for my HNC in Engineering, and its about re-designing parts of an SV650 to increase performance... and I just need some true background information, so please vote as it will help.

The voting is private ;)

Thanks

Jamie

seconded. Are we talking power/handling mods or bolt on stuff?
Most people will have cans on but I doubt they change performance.

Is that a joke?(can't tell)
I was under the impression you'd need to map/jet to get any gains from an exhaust let alone just the can.

fastdruid 24-12-09 06:04 PM

Re: Please vote. How many...

I didn't even need to rejet from 700cc, exhaust and air filter, took it to the dyno and the guy said "well it's running a touch rich, you could leave it as is, I could rejet it or I could just open up the air filter a bit more...

72@rw with just the exhaust/can, no jetting changes.

wow never knew that, always assumed you'd need more fuel mixutre going through to match the exhaust to get any gains. Is the same true for FI do you know?

Re: Poll: How many performance parts have you purchased for your SV?

My bike has things fitted to it that I think make it look better, but as for performance, I am not sure. Mind you and I am slowly chopping it up into a more Streetfighter style.

So far it has a double bubble screen and I removed the standard rear guard and fitted a rear hugger to start with, although to be honest they were actually fitted by the shop when I bought the bike. I am dropping the clip ons for a riser bar, but keeping the fairing. Dropping the over size Indi's and fitting smaller and brighter pretty ones and I have also fitted a new ECU, albeit a 33BHP restricted one.

So I have changed a few things and plan to change a few more. I have been reading up about all sorts of toys, such as big bore kits and race cans, but it will be a few years until I am can afford or legally ride a bike with these toys.

Hope that helps. By the way, I am purely a keen amateur and do not have any formal training in working on Motorcycles, how many others are like me in this respect?

Re: Poll: How many performance parts have you purchased for your SV?

I started like that, then recovered a smashed up two stroke and learnt how to rebuild everything but the exhaust and forks, im terrible at it all but i know the basics on an old two stroke and im now doing anything that needs fixing/changing on the sv.

Re: Poll: How many performance parts have you purchased for your SV?

Well I class performance parts as anything that benefits attributes like power, braking, weight saving, handling, aerodynamics etc
Hope that helps

And thanks for all the votes already! :)

Re: Poll: How many performance parts have you purchased for your SV?

Stuff already done:
GSXR front end;
320mm brake rotors
4-pot calipers
HH pads
braided lines
about to be revalved to suit
heavier springs
synthetic fork oil

posh rear caliper
rearsets
decent rear shock

race cams
free'er flowing air filter
full M4 pipe
tank raisers
rejet

Stuff in the pipeline:
lightened flywheel
ported heads
busa pistons
bump compression
pod filters and another rejet or maybe some flatslide carbs
[Project:fire in the hole ... just waiting to find a crank to build the motor around]

On this note I was wondering if a GSXR1000K5 flywheel would fit, only 610g, the same way round and doesn't mean going total loss.

I am looking at possibility of fitting rare earth magnets and skimming flywheel down to minimal thickness to hold together

How much does the existing one weigh? The GSXR1000K5 is already fitted with rare earth magnets to get so light, in comparison for example the NC30 flywheel is 1.8Kg!!

I've got one anyway which I plan on seeing if it will fit.

You will have to figure out how to trigger ignition if you manage to fit it in.

Does re-fitting my BIG Givi screen count 'cos it increases cruising speed by about 30 mph in this weather?

about 2300g including sprag clutch which can be lightened a bit.
You got a spare crank, I have 2 here if you need dimensions.

P.s in stock first gear any mass you remove from OD of flywheel is same as saving 10x the mass elsewhere

Re: Poll: How many performance parts have you purchased for your SV?

Just the usual K&N PCIII with a custom map, micron system and a freshly rebuilt Ohlins. All were cheap from friends.;)

I'd like to see how fast an SV would go, but I'd prefer to get the thing to handle as well as it can go without spending megabucks on the motor. If I wanted brute speed I'd have kept my VTR or SRAD.

USD front end is a nice idea.

Strictly speaking I have two, one in the original 650 engine (which is/was a decent 72BHP) and another in a bought for spares engine[1].

[1] Low compression on front pot, took it apart and looks like water got into the barrel and rusted the rings.

I've got these mods so far

Akrapovic race system
BMC filter
GSXR front end
Elka rear shock
Braided lines
HH pads
DB screen

best mod will happen next year...

I'm planning on losing some weight so that's gotta count!

Sorry to ask a question which I’m sure has been debated many times before, but what is the point in spending £1000’s on improving a road sv (in terms of performance) which will be slower than a bike such as a sports 600 of similar value? Why not buy a 600 in the first place (assuming money isn’t an issue)?

I can appreciate spending money to make the bike look better but I just don’t understand spending loads of cash on a bike that is destined to be a slow bike, why not just buy a faster bike in the first place?

I have raced an sv before and used it on track and know it is fun to show up faster bikes, but if I wanted a fast bike I would buy the newest 1000cc bike/or race prepped bike I could afford.

???

I do not know... Maybe 80 on a good day with tail wind...

Before the throttle boddies and cams it was running 76-77 ponies

PS Modifications in order of importance...

1.- Good Suspension Components
2.- Suspension Tuning by Race Shop used by local Racers Wining Races
3.- Decent Tires
4.- Geometry - Measurement and Adjustments
5.- Front Brakes, Better Master Cylinder, SS Brake Lines, Bigger Calipers, Better Brake Pads
6.- PAIR - TRE - TPS
7.- Power Commander (Or other fuel management)
8.- Exhaust System
9.- Dyno Tune by Race Shop used by local Racers Wining Races
10.- Adjustable Rear-Sets
11.- Read "THE TWIST OF THE WRIST - VOLUME II - KEITH CODE" At least 10 times
12.- Track Time, Track Time, Track Time... Oh yeah... More Track Time

Excellent question!!!

It is a lot easier to learn to be fast on a slower bike...

I am a lot faster on my SV650... than I ever was on my old R1...

Sure any monkey can twist the throttle on a straight line...

Like at track days... On the straight away several 600cc pass me... If do not out brake them, It takes me 3-4 corners to catch up and pass them...

I won't lie, there are riders I can not pass... That is just a fact of life, there is always going to be some one better...

Looks are not very relevant unless you are just pretending to be a rider...

Remember, you are showing off your skill over the skill of other riders on way faster and much more powerful bikes...

I think a lot of us love the feel of the V-Twin engine... I would love to have a KTM RC8R or a Ducati 1198R...

But can you imagine the cost of a high side or even a low side?

I would cry like if my mama died...

Luis

PS If Money was not an issue would have
  • 2 Ducati Desmocedici RR
  • 2 MV Agusta F4CC
  • 2 KTM RC8R
  • 2 Bimota Tesi 3D
... And a few other goodies... Why 2 of each? Because if I crashed I would just ride the other one... :thumleft:

i dont know whether people see this the same way, but in the case of making the SV faster for the road...

They still want the comfort of an SV, rather than a cramped 600.

They might want a small capacity v twin rather than a screaming 600, n cant afford the money for a fast ducati so get an sv n just tweak it abit.

Or just like modifying the bikes they have :)

But i cant be the voice of the majority, just what pops up in my head :)

For me I would be perfectly comfortable on a modern sportsbike*, but don't want one because they are so common.

*especially after getting rid of silly clipons and putting proper bars on

For me I didn't set out to spend 1000's (although I have), it started with a USD frontend after I bent the original (and at that point second hand frontends were more expensive and unavailable in comparison to the USD). Then the bike was a cosmetic write off, I got a payout for it and got to keep the bike which I turned into a trackbike and gradually over time became more and more tuned and modified, only a few items I have paid full price for, the majority came from ebay.

If I had the cash I'd spent on it all in one wodge I would have bought something else but it's been spread out over 9 years!

Everyone will have a different prespective... For me the SV650 is a tool... Mainly, I wanted to be a better sport rider... I attend about 14 track days a year, and at track days I ride for 30 minutes on and 30 minutes off for eight seccions.

I also do the occational Saturday 400 mile canyon loop ride, some times clock wise, othertimes counter clock wise... I like couter clock wise because you get an adrenaline rush coming really fast down the mountain...

Sometimes I attend Saturday bike night just to socialize with friends and to invite new people to do track days...

About Confort, I do not think Spies is thinking..."I should really get some gel grips for this handlebars vibration" When Rossi is on his tail... Confort is not a big part of the equation when riding a sport bike at speed...

If there was a good and affordable V-Twin supersport I would be all over it... Closest thing is Honda RC51 but it is a big bike and egros feels wird when seating on it...

I was really looking forward to the updated 3rd Gen SV... I was hopping for an SV850S and a SV1200S... Instead we got a Gay Douche, I mean Gladius from Suzuki... How very disapponting...
