Re: What is the world coming to?
I agree
|
Re: What is the world coming to?
I don't see them bantering with the public ...
Is it me, or were they not meant to be working ?? Sounds great .... but how do you think the victims of crime would feel about this ... Anyway .... doesn't sound like they were disiplined ........... just told it was a bad idea .... which it was !!! |
Re: What is the world coming to?
Hasn't Superintendent Andrew Murray got better things to superintend? Like getting his head out of his ****?
|
Re: What is the world coming to?
Yes, just a bit of fun. But they were on duty, and made to look very unprofessional. What did they expect?!
There was a story a few years ago of the fireman, sorry, firefighter who let his mates video him while he took a ride inside a massive tumble dryer. There's not a lot he would be able to say for himself getting injured like that, and the same goes for sliding down a hill on a riot shield :-s |

Re: What is the world coming to?
Magnums got it spot on .... its unprofessional .... and makes the force look unproductive ....
As a generalisation, there is too much waste in the Police force as it is ... too much banter ... and a lack of urgency towards anything (friends of mine in the force tell me) You only have to watch Traffic cops to see wasted time .... and unprofessional banter with criminals .... if I behaved like that in my industry I wouldn't have a job .... I have to be professional for every second I'm at work .... obviously some others don't have that at work..... but I feel the Police (and any public service) should be at all times ... |
Re: What is the world coming to?
Think if anything it shows joe public that the cops are human-how do you suggest a cop speaks to criminals that they come into contact with everyday?
|
Re: What is the world coming to?
its a tough one but if any of us did that during our working day wouldnt our bosses tell us off too?
I thought the super was gonna be a hit harder than that with them tbh and i have a feeling he said it to them with a twinkle in his eye tbh, kinda like "i have to say this but good for you lads.....just dont be stupid enough to let someone film you again, ok?" |

I don't think my boss would be very happy if he found out he was paying me to go sledging either. What's the difference? |
Re: What is the world coming to?
As a ".Org plummer" VT, you know that if you leave yourself wide open such as these guys have then expect complaints.
Yes its a bit of fun for the coppers, but they were on duty. The other side of things (speaking as a manager now) what would happen if one of them had been injured? I'm sure thames valley police H+S would have a hard time producing a risk assesment and method statement for using a riot shield as a sledge and be able to justify it. I know police hate it when idiots tell them "I pay your wages" but their wages do come from joe public the tax payer. I know its just a bunch of guys having a laugh in the snow, but if you are in a job where you are fairly high profile (wearing a viz vest with "police" written on it doesnt help) then you need to be leading from example. I can understand why people will complain about this. *Edit* It doesn't help when a lot of coppers don't exactly endear themselves to the public. Again, its the few that let the majority down. Speaking as a manager again now, If they worked for me, they would be looking for a new job. I don't pay my staff to play on my time. |
Re: What is the world coming to?
Never mind waste of taxpayers money etc. How cool did that run down the hill look!

Forgive me for thinking that you get paid to work ... Work hard ... play hard ... thats how it works down here anyway .... Like Speedplay .... as a Manager, maybe I see things differently .. |
Re: What is the world coming to?
Depends on the sort of work, when we had nothing to do at fabricators we would sit drinking tea. When I was working with my mate who recovers cars we would drink tea and play cards waiting for a call.
No calls to attend? What they supposed to do, sit in van looking officious? |
Re: What is the world coming to?
Its the same as some of us sitting on the org when we are supposed to be working.
Jeeeeese we all need to lighten up! Looked extremely fun, and it made the kids think more of the police in general, which is never a bad thing with some little scrotes. |
Re: What is the world coming to?
I just can't believe they were daft enough to post it on a public website!
Honestly |
Re: What is the world coming to?

A lot of Police work is reactive. yes, there are proactive things that can be done but again, that tends to be traffic work. Perhaps it wasn't the best thought out idea in the world but if there were a group of guys sledging and the cops have joined in then it makes the group of guys think that not all cops are power mad idiots. I personally wouldn't have done it but jeez, I would imagine the were doing it for all of 10 minutes....call it a refreshment break (yes, those things that every working person in the UK is SUPPOSED to get but that we VERY RARELY do cos we are too busy) |
Re: What is the world coming to?
Harmless fun. Yes they were on duty and yes they used police quipment. But nobody failed to answer a 999 call, I am guessing that theydid all their clerking/formfilling on time, nobody got hurt and nobody lost any money.
So what's the problem? Superintendent Murray is a boring old fart. |

Re: What is the world coming to?
A bit of fun, bit of public relations, showing the "human side of the police force" all well and good and I have no problem with that.
But if I got caught skiving off work when I was supposed to be working, by sliding down a hill on a server lid, bet your bottom dollar my boss would have given me a talking to, just like theirs did. |
Re: What is the world coming to?
Oh dear oh dear I despair of this country sometimes.Management----the real British disease shows its ugly head as usual. When will those who purport to be leaders of men and women learn that a happy workforce is so much more productive than one led by humourless miseries with their self important heads stuck firmly where the sun never ventures?
I could swear, but I respect the rules and wont. |

you've still to tell me how you want coppers to speak to the criminals |
Re: What is the world coming to?
Heh, one bar job I had manager completely understood and joined in with the official sports of shooting each other with the soda dispenser and ice-cube-down-shirt attacks. Because she knew the last manager had been an officious front bottom and had managed to get the staff devoting most of their working hours to making him look silly.

Yes that is true and I am all for having a happy workforce (it makes life a lot easier for one thing). I get on very well with all the lads I work with and appreciate all their efforts too. I can't speak for others but in the enviroment that I work in, everyone is required to have an enduction before being allowed on site. In the enduction it states "Do not endulge in dangerous horseplay". This is for the safety of others and themselves. What the workforce do in their own time is up to them (as long as it doesnt affect the work enviroment, Drink/drugs etc). The officers in the clip, were clearly on work time and not their own. As I have posted further up in the thread, I know its just a bunch of lads having a laugh, but they are not on their own time. "There is a time and place for everything" and all that.. |

I'm usually happy so long as the work gets done, but some people still want their cake and eat it. I would have rollocked the one who posted it the most - just plain daft |
Re: What is the world coming to?
Pah. DarylB took all yesterday off to go sledging. Called the office to say he couldnt get the car off the drive. A likely story;)
|
Re: What is the world coming to?
But a police officer cannot take off their uniform at any point in the duration of their shift. We need to be able to respond if there is an emergency situation so how can you possibly say they were clearly on work time??? How do you know it wasn't used as part of their refreshment time?
I don't, and you don't. You are making presumptions. Yes, perhaps it was a dumbass idea but come on folks, lighten up a bit! |

So as a police officer, when you take a refreshment break, are you still effectivly being paid and on call? |
Re: What is the world coming to?
And anyway, couple of extra seconds to run(:-P) back to the van isn't likely to take any longer than paying for coffee/donuts. So it's not like emergency response times would be affected :-D
