Ireland
 

I want to visit Ireland sometime this year, with Maria :) We're not really into nightclubs and stuff, but it would be nice to stay somewhere where there is a good night life, something resembling the culture of Ireland. I'd also quite like to stay somewhere that allows easy access to the country areas and maybe the coast of Ireland.

Can anyone recommend a good place to stay? I looked on http://www.discoverireland.com/ and east Ireland looks really nice

The Osprey Hotel in Naas, Co. Kildare.

Or just down the coast from Dublin, maybe somewhere like Bray or Greystones. Good access to Co. Wicklow, and a short train ride into Dublin.

Ireland is really nice, Dublin's worth a visit. Visit the oldest pub have the best pint of guinness you'll ever have, giant's causeway etc. etc.

Yea, i think i'd like to visit dublin. I might go for staying at a hotel out of dublin, and get a train ride in and stuff, see some other places too

im quite excited at the idea, ireland looks so nice

You might want to take a couple of days for that, there is lots to see and do.

The Guiness Storehouse is definately worth a visit. We went last year for a day trip and ran out of time to get round all the things I wanted to see.

hmm, ok, thanks fizz. I'll browse the interweb and decide with maria what we might like, maybe we'll stay closer to dublin :D

Dublin is a bit touristy and with prices to match, plus lots of stag weekends are held there. To see the real Ireland, get out of there.

Cork is nice and not too far from Dublin

I've been to the West Coast and that's really nice.The Cliffs of Mohen are one place you should go if you can. Breathtaking.

Wherever you go you will find you always get a good welcome wherever you go

If you do go, take your wet weather gear, as Ireland is green for a very good reason

Be sure to include Northern Ireland. As I posted yesterday, it is simply stunning. Down and Fermanagh - fantastic.

how long you going for,
are you doing north and south (its 117 mile from belfast to dublin),
do you want to set up base camp or move about
what time of year (roughly)
are you taking bikes


ps if in dublin you have to see the heure in the sewer

If your going south beyond Dublin to Bray/Wicklow then go a wee bit further to Wexford and Waterford but anywhere in Ireland is goooood :p

Wow, thats the sort of thing I would like to see and be surrounded by :D

DP - not so sure on details yet, probably a long weekend (four days, maybe 5 at a stretch). Definatly wont be on bikes, and likley to go in june :) I'd like to say at a nice hotel or nice B&B, im sure maria would aswell :D its nice to experiance the high-life...even if only just once!

but its a long way off yet, lots to plan but it'd be nice to have an idea of where to go. I'll read a bit more about Cork :cheers:

well id fly into dublin stay in a nice hotel,
day 2 train to cork overnight in cork stay outside city centre if poss
day 3 back to dublin full day doing guiness factory and the older bars then
day 4 train to belfast (its called the enterprise lol) overnight there (stay at the europa hotel its the most bombed building in the world :) ) then fly home from belfast city airport
unlike here trains are very good back home

I got family in Waterford, real nice scenery and roads. You'll have a fantastic time

There's loads of good guest houses where you'll get a slap up breakfast every morning, you'll come back a real bloater :p

Be careful on the roads, the recent weather will have created a lot of potholes.

i dont even understand what that means but its cold, it rains all the time and theres nothing to do! but if u are around this way go to the giants causeway, the scenery is possibly even better than that photo on the first page, and the road running up the cost from Larne to portrush is perfect smooth and very twisty :)

Im supprised Kerry has not been mentioned yet, now that has some fantastic places if you want seenery then the ring of kerry is worth a look some beautifull places on your way round. Or if your a little short of time go to killarney wonderfull town with some great places nearby like muckross house and tork waterfall. Its about an hour west of cork city but well worth the trip over in my oppinion, Dom

30 years since I was there, I hated it. With family and nothing to do.

I second this. I did exactly this in 2002, we stayed at the Royal in Bray and t'was great - four poster bed, nice pool and hot tub, and a short walk to the DART station and beach. About 30 mins on the DART then to Central Dublin.

I'd advise against Greystones just because the trains don't go there nearly as often - Bray is the proper terminus with the occasional service further to Greystones.

Matt, I've been 3 times in all now, I really do like it there, different pace of life, different attitude...

1st time I stayed in Waterford with 3 other friends for St Patricks day, got drunk etc etc. We walked into one pub, ordered Guiness, looked round pub was full of people all drinking Taunton Dry Blackthorn Cider, which we found hilarious as Taunton is 20 miles or so from Yeovil...

Next Time was this trip on bikes, County Clare, beautiful place, not much in the way of nightlife, but then thats not what we went for. Thread here

3rd time was last year, stayed in Liz's relatives holiday cottage, absolutly nowt to do in terms of nightlife, however a really beautiful place again to stay. Dublin is a short flight away 50 minutes or so or you can get the train.

That area of Ireland is fantastic and very well known for Surfing / surf culture.

Its a brilliant place to go to just chill and relax and get away from it all.

I'd say just pick an area, then go and explore, you'll have an ace time. Take the bike if you can, just adds an extra element to it.
