Recommend me...
Hi Folks,
Me and the wife always try to go away for a day or 2 around our wedding anniversary (5th feb) Was thinking about amsterdam or even venice but now probably gonna go somewhere in this county as we have left it late, cant think of anywhere inspiring, would like somewhere we havent been before. Could do with a few ideas please, somewhere scenic so i can use my new DSLR. Dont suggest the lakes as we went there september, peaks would be nice or somewhere similiar but dont know much around there. Scotlands too far, anywhere within 2 hours drive or so of birmingham would be great. Thanks Phil |
Re: Recommend me...
Brecon?? Or Nth Wales, maybe Llanberis?
|
Re: Recommend me...
There's some lovely pubs inthe Costwolds, perhaps a small hotel near Stowe on the Wold?
Or Shresbury area. Very quiet, rural. Pete ;) |
Re: Recommend me...

Come to Shrewsbury, as Pete da man suggested. It's a beautiful town centre, lots of scope for DSLR wizardry. You might even bump into me. Now there's a bonus;) |
Re: Recommend me...

Never been but would like at some point. Place needs to have a reasonable amount of b&b and hotels within the area also. |
Re: Recommend me...
What about ... and this is a bit left field ... a trip to Birmingham? What about getting a canal boat for a couple of days and doing the canals and getting near things like cadburys world? Having a champaign breakfast and everything very close to home?

Re: Recommend me...
another vote for the cotswolds. Some very cute olde worlde little hotels round there and plenty of nice scenery.
Stayed in a little place there once with floors at all kinds of crazy angles and a very nice 4 poster bed. |

if your going to edinburgh get the train, getting into the city centre after the flight is a nightmare. train takes you right into the centre.

I used to live in Edinburgh city centre, but work in England 40 weeks of the year, so my Monday morning and Friday evening commutes were to and from Edinburgh airport to catch a flight. There's not that many folk know Edinburgh airport better than I do unless they work for BAA. |

Cotsworlds are gorgeous. I spent a brief amount of time in Windsor last spring and that made me want to go back for longer but others may be able to support it a pretty place to explore. |
Re: Recommend me...
Peak district is nice, would n't bother coming this way, its all flat and boring, except Southwold, which is a bit more than your 2 hours.
|
Re: Recommend me...
Where is a good place to stop in the peaks for a good base etc?
Peaks or the cotswolds i think we've narrowed it down too. |

Re: Recommend me...
Update...
We've decided on the peak district this time, we are staying in a place in buxton, the peak forest. Looks nice and not expensive. Will post some pics when we get back on Sunday. Thanks for all the input, it was very useful. 11 years of marriage, bit like an armed robbery stretch... Phil |
Re: Recommend me...
Might rate as a bit touristy for a native, but a couple years ago my wife took me to Stratford Upon Avon for a weekend and it was really nice -some great old pubs and restaurants, easy to stroll around, and you could maybe catch some shakespeare.

Re: Recommend me...
Well, we had a great relaxing weekend in the peaks, drove around a bit, took hundreds of pics using my new camera, light was rubbish so gotta get better at exposure etc.
We stayed at a place called Devonshire arms not far from Buxton, food was very good, room could have been better but not too bad. Anyway, a few pics of varying quality, feedback required please and any advice on exposure in crap light welcome, struggling to get decent pics in cloudy conditions, taking loads in various settings. http://i758.photobucket.com/albums/x...5/DSC_0140.jpg http://i758.photobucket.com/albums/x...DSC_0113-1.jpg http://i758.photobucket.com/albums/x...5/DSC_0204.jpg Matlock Bath http://i758.photobucket.com/albums/x...5/DSC_0260.jpg |
