Anyone from the Police force on here?

Are there any police officers on the org? The reason I'm asking is because I'm seriously considering joining the police next year once I've finished my degree. I am particularly interested in becoming a motorcycle officer.

I have a few questions:

1) How do I go about becoming a motorcycle officer? Do I have to do a few years 'normal' service patrolling the streets and things? 2) What's the training like to become a motorcycle officer?

I thought it was worth asking on here because I'm sure someone said there are a few motorcycle officers who are members?

Thanks in advance.

1-join the police-yep-your looking at probably a min of 5 years before you even get an interview(and with the cut backs everywhere these positions are becoming more and more harder to come by)and once in you'll probably find another avenue that interests you more
2-very intensive-like your test x 100 all the time

a career in the police never turns out how you imagine it-you might join wanting to be a traffic cop but end up finding your more suited to crashing doors in and rolling about with scum:D

Good louck in applying for the Police.

I work for Staffs and you have to do 2 years probation before you apply for ANY specialist role and to be honest you once you are in you will think 5 years plus is a good time to move on as the more experience you get the better. And normal everyday patrol is the best way to get that experience.

I am trying to get into the Bike Team, decided in 2007 that is what I wanted to do and had an attachment, fell in love and have been waiting for a job to come up ever since, still waiting.

As husky has said, you will find your career path is different once you are in as there are so many roles and divisions. I wanted to be a dog handler, but my heart has moved on now I have seen their role.

Good luck in whatever you choose.

Ive applied to the police specials after recommendation from another org officer, id like to go into traffic / bikes etc but before i can become a regular (if i get into the police specials that is) i have to do 2 years as a special, its voluntry and you only have to do 16 hours a month but the way i see it at least this way i get an insight into the police force and how i can deal with it and use my time as a special to decide if i want to become a regular officer.

Good luck with what ever you choose :thumright:

Think about it very carefully. Why do you want to join? I know of very few people who having joined the job still think its what they thought it was before they did.

Just remember Holdup, Specials get to play 100% off the time with VERY little paperwork, regulars spend 90% of their time doing paperwork and 10% playing .... so if you become a special try and see that aspect too .... shocks a few Specials when they join up and they then think WTF

go and speak to some local coppers and try to have a chat with the traffic mob-sometimes you do get what you want and do end up doing the job you imagined you'd be doing, just need to have luck on your side-here's a pic of my new police boots:-s-and that was all down to luck

Like Shell and Husky have said, sometimes after your 2 yr probation, you change your mind about what you want to specialise in. I always wanted to do traffic before I joined, and although I still have an interest in cars and bikes, I can't think of anything worse than being a traffic cop now. I have found that my niche is very definately crime work, ie, drugs and serious crimes.

I have almost 4 yrs service now and it is only now that I am starting to consider applying for other posts and tbh, for the first few years you are constantly learning how to deal with things that you don't get bored and you are pretty happy just doing response.

I'm having to go in on my day off to some rather urgent paper work. Bearing in mind this relates to a job that I did in in 08, its amazing what comes up.

As my my old skipper said 5 minutes of blues equals greif and loads of paper work...If you don't like paper work I won't bother even applying, bearing in mind that I have written up court papers at 5am into a 12 hour shift.

On the other hand it is a job where you will be relatively well paid after a few years and it still has a pension scheme to murder your mother for.You will never be made redundent unless the Huns have already burst through the gates of London. If you can live with the frustration and petty bureaucracy, and the fact that you wont change the world or "make a difference" go for it.

Its a very good job that 90% of bobbies openly admit they love..... The other 10% love it too but they just like to moan ;-)

Go for it - You wont look back!!

Actually to join the police you need to be able to live with the frustration and petty bureaucracy whilst still believing you can can change the world and make a difference. That way you will stay motivated and enjoy your job.

Personally after 23 years I still believe I can make a difference, or at least I can in the short term to the ones I manage to nick!

With regard to your original question about getting onto bikes it will very much depend on which force you join, some have quite a bit of investment in bikes, others don't. As has already been said I think you shouldn't want to join with any pre-conceived ideas of what role you want to do. Everybody has to start at the bottom and work their way up, and bike team jobs are usually pretty well sought after. You may also find other roles that are even more fun..... (fancy riding a bike all day in this weather?)

The bigger the force the more options you will have to move about.

Upset an ex cop at the weekend. Called him an ex cop. He said no I am a retired cop. Apparently there is a big difference.

didn't help when I then said. Were you asked to retire or told to?.

So you want to be a cop. Best develop your attitude first.

Sorry guys in uniform here, all I have met have been good guys. Pity some cops out there fail my attitude test though
