Xbox screen keeps freezing?
 

The screens keeps freezing on my xbox no red rings of death, just frezzes up and cracks.

Any ideas?

could be cooling.. has it been upgraded ;) . Mine started freezing and then wouldnt eject the dvd rom drive. It eventually errored and ended up with rrod.

Yup.. overheating. I had this happen when I first got my xbox. So I bought a cooling fan and never had any problems since and thats been 4yrs.

sounds like cooling mine started to freeze for bout 6 months then 3 red rings appeared, they run too hot need to be clear open space and extra fans help loads

Where can I get these fans u guys speak of? Are they built
for the xbox or are they purpose built? Cheers

You might have just become so good at the game that you make such a sick overkilltastic combo that the Xbox can't handle it

Sounds like overheating, Mine did it and eventually got RROD you can get more fans from game station. they just clip on the back.

rip the thing apart remove the heat sink's clean the thermal paste off the chips and sinks replace with some arctic silver 5, put a small blob of AS5 and press heat sink on it and secure wait a cople of days to set, clean fan blades from dust as it makes the air harder to pass over the blades reducing the CFM (amount of air they push) perhaps mesure the fans and replace with some computer fans that spin faster or replace the case with a lian li xbox 360 case

thats the proper way to do it :/

below are the heat sinks and circled is the paste remove ALL the paste and then aply new to the chips not the heat sinks

Take it to game and trade it in for a new elite model NOW

otherwise, xbox customer support are very very helpfull, deal with them and no-one else, they are quick to give people new xboxs and stuff like that if their tests fail

I went and got an elite cos I was told you can't get rrod on the elite not true mine has been away to sunny Germany twice not just can't handle heat

What is happening is your Graphics Processing Unit is getting hot and may be coming away from it`s fixing . Does the screen seperate into seperate blocks of different colours ? . This happened on my first Gen Elite and I had it replaced under warranty . What you can do is go onto the Xbox website and go to the warranty section . There you will be asked to tap in your serial number and from there they can ascertain as to whether you are still covered by warranty as they did extend it to 3 years for certain known Xbox issues . It takes about 5 minutes to do and is worth a punt . Do NOT go pulling your 360 apart until you have at least checked the status of your warranty with Microsoft . Mine ended up getting replaced and it was well and truly past a year when it went Bang and let out all the Magic Smoke .

they are less susceptible, due to improved cooling.

You must ensure that air can get to it though, that there is enough space on all sides for air to flow through

Mine started doing this at the beginning of the month, didn't seem to matter what game (Halo, VP:TIP, MW2, Forza) I was playing it would just randomly freeze. After Halo froze three times in one evening I decided it was time for MS to repair it again.

Got a refurbed one back instead, which made me realize how knackered my DVD drive was too (made a real racket but the new one is almost silent) and had no problems since.

Kick it till it RROD's then you have a 3 yearwarrenty get a new one free from MS, sorted

Warranty is only three years from the date of purchase OR date you last had it repaired, mind. If you bought your 360 in 2006 and it fails now with RROD, it's out of the three year warranty.

hmmm, i had the red rings about 2 years back, so it should still be within the warranty then.

yeah my drive/fan sounds like it is trying to take off sometimes.

The DVD drive is the noisiest part - install a game to the hard drive for better performance and less noise. When you quit to dashboard from a game running off DVD you'll hear the DVD drive shut down and the reduction of noise is ridiculous.

My drive, though would make a loud grindy noise whenever it started doing something. Turning the 360 on, for example, or putting a new disc in and closing the door. My previous 360 made a similar noise before it first RROD'd so when they fixed the RROD they also replaced the optical drive. It then slowly wore out until I started having the grindy noise again, just prior to this more recent return for service.

You can carry on with it as it is (random freezes and hoping it'll RROD) or you can just bite the bullet and having it repaired by MS.
