Paraffin, £6 for 4 litres HERE
http://www.winbuyer.co.uk/cat-113/ke...FZqY2Aodj0tvGw

It seems to be on sale at a lot of garages ATM, I'm sure I saw similar for £5.60 in one.

Also recommended by SV owners manual for cleaning o-ring chains.

Maybe you can put paraffin in the cleaning mechanism. Or use a toothbrush, free from your bathroom.

Are you only using the Triumph for sunny sundays, or all the time. If it's going to see regular/long distance use put the Scottoiler on it!

hmmm

must be a nice easy device that will clean everything up without it flinging everywhere.

There is , you could pm darren he recommended one in another thread.
Then again I just use a rag

It's amazing how well a chain comes up with just a pot of paraffin, a Tesco value tooth brush, a rag and some WD40 to polish it up after. http://forums.sv650.org/showpost.php...postcount=1103

Re: Chain cleaner?

Save your money, 1 x Parafin from B & Q ( Called Parascene ) from the garden section, pack of budget toothbrushes from tesco and your done.

It only goes everywhere if you pour it on the chain. If you use the parafin sparingly it'll be fine and I prefer the toothbrush approach to running it through a proper cleaner as you can check the chain for tightspots etc whilst your scrubbing it with the brush.

IMHO

parafin £3.99 4ltrs at my local garden center (hollybush j11 M6) does the job quickly and cheaply :)

Re: Chain cleaner?

just to pop it into perspective after having a chain snap on my (in 5 places) im a bit over zelous about chain cleaning. You see all those pics of before and after chain cleaning? well mine looks like everyonesclean chain before i start cleaning it. bit bad i know but im so scared about it happening again. So something to make it easier is good :)

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure you don't want to be putting wd40 on your chain, it's designed to penetrate and degrease so would really **** your o rings up.

Parafin and re-lube is more than enough.

I've seen it a few times on the org that WD-40 on chains is ok. Some people even clean their chains with it because it contains paraffin I believe but I could be talking balls.. I just give the the face plates of the chain a quick spray to get any old residue off. Got to keep the blingy chain looking blingy. ;)

Re: Chain cleaner?

WD-40, use #1345
Dissolving rubber.

Maybe if used instead of KY jelly. If O-rings can take chain lube and all manner of guff from the road surely the nation's favourite tool will be ok. It can't be that virulent a solvent, can it?

dizzyblonde 22-02-10 10:21 PM

Re: Chain cleaner?

Always used WD40 to clean my chains. But I don't spray it liberally on the chain I spray it on a rag sparingly, and use elbow grease to scrub. Pristine clean and a nice base to immediately cover with chain lube.

I haven't had a chain fall off from things disintegrating. And neither has Carnivore, who showed me how to clean it properly using WD40. And hes been doing it for eleven years.

On the subject of Muc off, I wouldn't put any of their products near my bikes. The last person I know who used their bike cleaner it did something weird to their headlight lenses!

whether its any good or not for me is a moot point. Its f*cking expensive chain cleaner when parafin does just as good a job and its much much cheaper...

From this

to this

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...e/23110016.jpg

took 4 hours elbow grease, an old toothbrush, and a small bit of kerosene in a jamjar. Our resident chemist A*H told me not to throw out the old kerosene, as it's a solvent - and so the muck sinks to the bottom of the jamjar and you can use the fuel again. So it really is worth giving a go.

Re: Chain cleaner?

I would like to say the cheapest cleaner I have found for the gunk on the wheels off the chain is Mr Sheen :-) Magic stuff, old oil glides off the wheel.

Although, if you don't fancy your hands getting dirty, or anywhere near the rear wheel...that SDoc stuff is quite impressive, but darn expensive, but then I didn't pay for it :-)

My service book recommends Kerosene but couldn't find it at local B&Q etc. Anybody know where it's typically available from?

Kerosene is American for paraffin. Garden stores, petrol stations, motor factors, t'interweb.

Oh, and WD-40 beats paraffin in one v. important way. Those filthy smokers are less likely to self-immolate if they find they can't wait until after cleaning if they use it.

yorkie_chris 23-02-10 12:04 AM

Re: Chain cleaner?

The local B&Q call it parascene and sell it as fuel for greenhouse heaters.

Or white spirit is pretty similar but a little thinner.

yes the mucoff cleaner works i had one for my push bike (i use the same chain oil as on the sv) and it does indeed work well apart from when you drop a dumbbell on it  they sort of smash

Re: Chain cleaner?

Been using WD-40 and a rag to get chains spotless for years with no problems.

It's fairly cheap here in the US.
And it smells better, makes less mess, etc. than paraffin.

I use paraffin on chain, the cleaner is only used for brakes (don't fancy using paraffin on brakes!), the HP dry lube is the best one I found and worth the penny as it last longer then other brands. the brush comes in handy for cleaning other bike bites. :D

I thought you were recommending the brake cleaner for the chain!
Yeah I like wurth stuff, pricey though.

Re: Chain cleaner?

white spirit, turps and a large sponge plus chain lube of your choosing.

Did this for a bit then got bored now use degrasant spray hose pipe and spray on lube.

If you use my method the only thing you get filthy is your hands;) Come on Andy, you wouldn't expect me to make a mess all over my garden would you?

I do mine in the road, where the bike lives. And then wash the rest of the bike. That usually floats away the worst of the muck.

Maybe put a large cardboard box down or an old sheet, and a smaller box behind the swingarm. WD-40 is good for polishing off the back wheel and swingarm. Just not the tyre or back brake!

But if this thing actually works nearly as well as a toothbrush it's probably worth it.
