Great Lyrics...
Ok folks, note down those lyrics that you like.
Maybe its just clever wordplay, maybe there is real meaning in them for you, whatever it is that appeals to you about them, share with the .org. Try and keep it to a couple of lines, rather than reproducing the song, maybe a max of 6 lies of the song? Oh and dont forget to name the Artist and the name of the song so anyone interested can look it out and have a listen, and if you feel like it, let people know why the lyrics have meaning for you. Re: Great Lyrics...
Being a fan of 80's and 90's American rock bands, smutty double entendre lyrics are common, so I wont post any of those.
Soundgarden - "The grass is always greener where the dogs are ****ting" Buckcherry - Crazy Bitch http://www.elyrics.net/read/b/buckch...ch-lyrics.html (quite NSW and definately not within the U rating here!) Winner of 'Most Ridiculous Lyric Contest' for me is from Bon Jovi... "I wanna be just as close as your Holy Ghost is" Always makes me want to be ill. |

Re: Great Lyrics...
Thin Lizzy, The Boys Are Back In Town:
"Man when I tell you she was cool she was red hot, I mean she was steaming" What? C'mon Phil - that doesn't make any sense. Led Zep, The Lemon Song: "Squeeze me babe - 'til the juice runs down my leg" Ewwww. SLF, Suspect Device: "They take away our freedom in the name of liberty Why don't they all just clear off why won't they let us be They make us feel indebted for saving us from hell And then they put us through it it's time the *******s fell" Feels rather timely right now doesn't it? The Damned, Love Song: "I'll be the mail, you'll be the guard I'll be the ink on your season ticket card I'll be the rubbish, you'll be the bin I'll be the paint on the sign if you'll be the tin" Now that's a touching lyric if ever I heard one. And so many more. |

Re: Great Lyrics...
I love that line from NIN.
But mine is from Jeff Buckley's Lover You Should've Come Over: It's never over, my kingdom for a kiss upon her shoulder It's never over, all my riches for her smiles when I slept so soft against her It's never over, all my blood for the sweetness of her laughter It's never over, she's the tear that hangs inside my soul forever But only when sung by him and not any of the wannabees who have covered it. |

Pink Floyd - Time
The whole song has cracking lyrics, but this line in paticular is insirational: The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older. Shorter of breath and one day closer to death. |

I would've liked you to have been deep frozen too
and waiting still as fresh in your flesh for my return to Earth But your father refused to sign the forms to freeze you Let's see you'd be about 60 now, and long dead by the time I return to Earth My time held dreams were full of you, as you were when I left; still underage Your android replica is playing up again, it's no joke When she comes she moans another's name Hawkwind - Spirit of the Age |
Re: Great Lyrics...
I hear stories from the chamber
How Christ was born into a manger And like some ragged stranger Died upon the cross And might I say it seems so fitting in its way He was a carpenter by trade Or at least that's what I'm told In Heaven His throne is made of gold The ark of his Testament is stowed A throne from which I'm told All history does unfold. Down here it's made of wood and wire And my body is on fire And God is never far away. Into the mercy seat I climb My head is shaved, my head is wired And like a moth that tries To enter the bright eye I go shuffling out of life Just to hide in death awhile And anyway I never lied. Nick Cave - The Mercy Seat Nearly all of Nick Cave's songs have astounding lyrics. Who else would think to compare the Biblical Ark of the Covenant with the electric chair. |

Re: Great Lyrics...
I'm a massive fan of The Tragically Hip (a Canadian band I'd guess most here haven't heard of, but have been massive in Canada for over 20 years). Their lyrics have got to be some of the most interesting and debated as to meaning. Anyhow I'm hard-pressed to come up with any single song of theirs as my favourite, nevermind a line or two, but the first two lines of "At the Hundredth Meridian" always make me smile:
Me debunk an American myth? And take my life in my hands? Which to me refers to how wound-up Americans (or America as a nation) can get when challenged about their often-skewed perception of the world and historical events. |
Re: Great Lyrics...
Whole song for me...
This years love had better last Heaven knows it's high time And I've been waiting on my own too long But when you hold me like you do It feels so right I start to forget How my heart gets torn When that hurt gets thrown Feeling like you can't go on Turning circles when time again It cuts like a knife oh yeah If you love me got to know for sure Cos it takes something more this time Than sweet sweet lies Before I open up my arms and fall Losing all control Every dream inside my soul And when you kiss me On that midnight street Sweep me off my feet Singing ain't this life so sweet This years love had better last This years love had better last So whose to worry If our hearts get torn When that hurt gets thrown Don't you know this life goes on And won't you kiss me On that midnight street Sweep me off my feet Singing ain't this life so sweet This years love had better last This years love had better last This years love had better last This years love had better last David Gray - This years love. EDIT: Doh, tupping new theme  |

Re: Great Lyrics...
Just thought of another that's great fun, and a bit of a Canadian drinking anthem. Spirit of the West - Home for a Rest (my first ever visit to London I made a point of having a pint on Charing Cross Rd because of this song):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPJD3qcIL7s You'll have to excuse me, I'm not at my best I've been gone for a month, I've been drunk since I left These so-called vacations will soon be my death I'm so sick from the drink, I need home for a rest We arrived in December and London was cold We stayed in the bars along Charing Cross Road We never saw nothin' but brass-taps and oak Kept a shine on the bar with the sleeves of our coats You'll have to excuse me, I'm not at my best I've been gone for a week, I've been drunk since I left And these so-called vacations will soon be my death I'm so sick from the drink, I need home for a rest Take me home! Euston Station, the train journey North In the buffet car, we lurched back and forth Past old crooked dykes through Yorkshire's green fields We were flung into dance as the train jigged and reeled You'll have to excuse me, I'm not at my best I've been gone for a week, I've been drunk since I left And these so-called vacations will soon be my death I'm so sick from the drink, I need home for a rest Take me home! By the light of the moon she'd drift through the streets A rare old perfume, so seductive and sweet She'd tease us and flirt as the pubs all close down Then walk us on home, and deny us a round You'll have to excuse me, I'm not at my best I've been gone for a month, I've been drunk since I left And these so-called vacations will soon be my death I'm so sick from the drink, I need home for a rest Take me home! The gas heater's empty it's damp as a tomb The spirits we drank, now ghosts in the room I'm knackered again, come on sleep take me soon And don't lift up my head till the twelve bells at noon You'll have to excuse me, I'm not at my best I've been gone for a month, I've been drunk since I left And these so-called vacations will soon be my death I'm so sick from the drink, I need home for a rest Take me home! |
