What should I service on the car?
Wife's car has done 4500 miles since I serviced it last year. It's not due anything major on the schedule, just oil, plugs, filter, etc. What should I replace just because it's a yearly thing, and what would be a waste of money having only done 4500 miles?
Thanks |
Re: What should I service on the car?
How many miles in total? Or was last year's its first service?

All the other stuff are probably good for 10k without problems. |

Re: What should I service on the car?
If it's not already had one I'd possibly check the cambelt, thanks to someone on here mentioning it I had my golf's cambelt checked at 40k even though the recommended change was 60 odd thousand. I'm bloody glad I did as the pully's had completely cracked and were barely together.
Think VW started making ibiza's as of around 02 too (could be wrong). Could be talking crap , but perhaps worth a check... Apart from that, I'd definitely do atleast the oil and maybe the filter if it'd due/inexpensive. Would trust the above posters over me though! |
Re: What should I service on the car?
Oil and filter change for sure. Not worth skimping on those.
Take a look at the plugs as the low mileage/rich running due to cold starts might stuff them. If they're oily or pitted/corroded then change them. Check on the service history when the cambelt was changed. Mileage might be irrelevant. Could be an age-related change is due. |
Re: What should I service on the car?
I have a feeling it doesn't have a cambelt. I think its a chain. It's the 1.2 triple pot 12 valve.
EDIT: If it does have one it's not obvious and it's boxed in with plastic. |
Re: What should I service on the car?
as said, oil and filter, but i would also recommend that you change the cabin/pollen filter if it has 1

Re: What should I service on the car?
home service is oil + filter and checks for that low.
If your gonna do plugs + air filter too can i recommend eurocarparts.com for cheap prices and pretty quick delivery. Got 3 plugs for £6 for my C1 from there monday. 40k out of spark plugs is crazy. |
Re: What should I service on the car?
I would certainly look into the belt side!
1.2 ibizas had an issue where the belt would jump a couple of teeth and you would be in need of an engine! www.seatcupra.net is the FORUM on SEATs!!! I had 2 of the Cupra version and I know it's an excellent forum! |

It does seem to be an issue the chain jumping a few teeth on the sprocket and bending valves. I guess that would be the tensioner at fault, but don't really know how to check it. If I get to a service where there is something on the schedule that I can't do, I will put it into a Seat dealer and ask them to check it, and next time it goes in I'll ask them to check the tensioner too. Thank again. |
Re: What should I service on the car?
Chain! Yes :)
people suggest changing or inspecting at 4 years or 60k miles |
