Worlds Scariest Job?

I actually went cold watching this and had to keep looking away. Not recommended for people who don't like heights!

seen this yesterday elsewhere. the scary part is when near the top they go with no harnesses on !

beabert 18-09-10 05:38 PM

Re: Worlds Scariest Job?

I saw that on documentary storm yesterday.

Its not scary at all, id pay them to be climb that. No need for a harness, just slows the climbing down! It would be awesome!

Re: Worlds Scariest Job?

Can't believe they do that without a safety line. I'd have a parachute on if I was doing that

Scarey stuff
I've done working at height, and there is no way I wouldn't be attached to something solid with a lanyard all the time.

Re: Worlds Scariest Job?

I didnt think parachute were good below about 2000 feet, but I would be wearing a base jumping suit, save the hastle of climbing down.

Ive worked at heights that I had to become comfortable at, you never get used to it but develope a healthy respect for them.

These heights are in another league though.:smt120

Screw that for a living.
I assume the towers are designed like that for functionality purposes and not just cost savings?

Re: Worlds Scariest Job?

I knew this would be tower climbing before I clicked, those guys must have massive ********. Just think how much that thing is swaying about. That would terrify me, but oddly enough 2000' in a microlight feels fine. Perception is funny, I work at fatal height regularly but I had a vertigo attack just standing on a 10' wall last year, there was something about the way the ground sloped away from it, made me turn to jelly!

I've got to do some of that next week during my heights training :( not looking forwards to it at all, and it's only 500ish feet.

Yep, I have always had the utmost respect for our linesmen at work. It's not something anyone can do.

The mast in the vid was very tall, yes, but at least there was a ladder most of the way. Our guys have to use step bolts straddling either side of the corner steelwork. Take a closer look at a lattice tower (an electricity pylon, in layman's terms) next time you pass by one.

Cleaning power lines has got to be a bit hairy as well.

Re: Worlds Scariest Job?

Being a climber, I got used to being stood on tiny ledges at height, but to really hammer home the fun, I used to climb solo too. For those of you not in know, that means on my own, no rope and no one to catch me if I fell. Biggest thing I solo climbed was an ice sheet on a mountain that was 900feet above sea level. The base of the mountain was at sea level too and the fall was a long way, down a very steep almost vertical wall. That was my second day out in my new crampons, just to get me used to it. My guide was my best mate and we often climbed together on hard stuff around Europe when we were not teaching climbing.

On another trip with him to Italy, we were sport climbing in Sardinia on a 6C+. I was two moves from the top and tiring fast, when the heavens opened and drops of rain the size of sweets soaked everything, including the tiny holds I was gripped onto. Being forty degrees Celcius though, it dried almost as fast as it fell, not not quick enough to give me the friction I needed and I fell off at sixty feet.

You get used to working at height, especially when you do it every day, but it never stops being scary when you hand slips slightly or what you are standing on sways in the wind!

i have been up the effel tower, empire state building, the sears tower and the CN tower in Torronto, which is higher than that tower, not that bad really, i was clever and used the lift.

Theres an irony to wearing a hard hat if not not going to clip your harness on till you get tired. I doubt the hat will help if you slip.

It will help if your mate climbing above drop a tool though.

Didn't realise how many people were scared of heights! So other than jayne and me no one else would else enjoy it?

Torn between the absolutely amazing view and the feeling of my body turning to jelly with the swaying of the tower.

Would love to do that, just think of the view ;-) Dont have a fear of heights tbh

Thinks it a mind thing re. safety harness, doesnt really matter if its 2 ft or 500 ft, u is gonna hold on!!!

That would be an awesome view, but I think I'd clip the safety line on for the outside part.

Not at all. I've jumped from heights as low as 400 ft, although its not to be recommended. Time in the air is about 15 secs and the landing is a bit harsh. General height for military parachuting is 800 ft.

I would do that for fun let alone be paid for it. At the moment I am paid to sit at a desk and make money for a bank.

I would give up all I have learnt and experienced work wise for a job like that.

Not a hope in hell!

We've got leaves in our gutter that have needed cleaning out for over 3 years. I suspect they'll still be there in another 3. Evolution gave me feet - Not wings! There's a bloody good reason for that and its something I like to call gravity... IT NEVER LOSES!
