Where to buy fitted chain and sprockets? London area.
Knew it was on the way out but need it desperately now.
Does anyone know anywhere I can get this fitted today (Sunday) because due to work I will not be able to get it done during the week and I have a funeral to attend to on Saturday next week :( that the bike must be fit to ride on to it. Any advise would be grateful, can travel this is not a problem. |
Re: Need a new chain a sprocket and need it now!
Where abouts are you based? People may be able to suggest places near to you.

Re: Where to buy fitted chain and sprockets? London area.
I can't think of anywhere you'll get a set supplied and fitted on a Sunday at no notice.

Re: Where to buy fitted chain and sprockets? London area.
Ok just thought i would give you guys the end of the story.
So chain is all sorted now http://londonbikers.com/forums/Skins...ns/BigGrin.gif got it done from a place in Kennington called Chas bikeshttp://londonbikers.com/forums/Skins...Icons/Wink.gif Got a DID x ring gold chain, front and rear sprocket fitted on a sunday for £167.53 including vat and all. what do you think is this reasonable? Its the 1st time I have replaced it on the big bike. On the 125 it would cost about £30-£40, gone are those days at those prices, and I would usally fit it myself to but i won't have the time to do it this week and really needed Cilla fit for the weekend. |

Re: Where to buy fitted chain and sprockets? London area.
Hmmmmm this is why I rarely post or even bother to come on to forums as there always has to be a smart alec :p rather than saying something useful.
Maybe you could elaborate so we can all learn by MY mistake, even give some advise for next time, or what you may have done in similar circumstances. I thought a heavy duty DID x ring gold chain was any where over a ton, plus of course the front and rear sprocket was replaced, all with heavy duty kit, on a Sunday with no appointment, just walked in and walked out. Maybe if you were really smart you could have offered your services and make some money from it, I would always much rather pay someone who really needs the work / money. As I said I am not shy of doing any general maintenance myself but unfortunately I have a funeral of a fellow biker friend to attend to on Saturday and it was of the up most importance that the bike runs with absolutely no issues at all. My weekday job is at least 65 hrs and I do not have a garage of which I can leave all and pick up where I left it later on in the evening. So thanks for your input, it has been really helpful, as always I have learnt nothing new coming on to forums other than the fact that people can be complete **** by getting over familiar. |

Not overly impressed with them, took the SV in for an MOT and they did about £100 of work without seeking authorisation, and it was all stuff that I could have fixed if they had failed it and I had taken it home. Hoping that Essential Rubber will get their MOT License back before I need the Zed MOT'd... |

Re: Where to buy fitted chain and sprockets? London area.
sounds like the going rate to me... obviously an avoidable chunk is labour but as you say sometimes it's just got to be done.
Local indy near to me quoted about 150 for xring did & sprockets fitted larger dealer quoted 170 fitted in the end got the parts for 95 (should have been 90 but couldn't buy as set so had to get individuals from different shops) and i'm whacking them on myself hopefully this weekend or next. sucks not having a garage tho so hoping michael fish gives a good forecast for the weekend  |
Re: Where to buy fitted chain and sprockets? London area.
I think it is fair to say that £90 is a lot of money for that job, but that said I think the OP has a point - it may be expensive, but that could have been put a little more sensitively.
It should also be considered that this was done on a Sunday with no notice - I would expect to pay a premium for such a service, whether it's worth £90 is the buyers concern. Half an hour is plenty of time if you are suitably equipped to fit said parts. Anyway, just so you know, a certain shop I may have mentioned before charges between £25 and £35 to fit a chain and sprockets to A.N.Other average motorbicycle. |
Re: Where to buy fitted chain and sprockets? London area.
Some much more helpful and better responses here, thanks guys :)
Yes Daveog it was Chas bikes next to the imperial war museum. Have to say soulkiss I would have been well “F” off with them if they had done the same. Anyone have any advice on what to do in situations like that, what would be the legal side of things there? I also agree Essential rubber is my preferred place to use, I have known the boys very well for many years and I have never had any issues with them, I too hope they get there MOT license back asap as mine will need to be done on 2 bikes by the end of next month. |
Re: Where to buy fitted chain and sprockets? London area.
Essential's MOT bay will sorted very soon, the paperwork is done, (despite the council being worse than useless), the boys from VOSA are happy and it will be available in the near future.
I'll post to that effect in the Soho section when it's ready. |

Went to collect the bike at the end of the day, and had to wait for it to be put back together. Then rode it home and discovered they had snapped the fairing. Called up for an explanation and was passed to the mechanic by the owner who said that where he tried to unscrew the bolt (that I expalined to the owner about) it forced the crack to snap. Unimpressed that my explanation was ignored and the snapped fairing wasn't brought up until I phoned for an explanation. Now only use in an emergency (eg. punctures). |

Trade price on a DID Gold X-ring C+S set for a SV650 is 20 to 25 quid more than that. £170 to supply and fit that grade of chain on a Sunday... I'd be happy charging that, I'd also be happy to pay it if I couldn't do the job myself and needed the bike desperately |
Re: Where to buy fitted chain and sprockets? London area.
dk spares DID gold x ring chain and sprockets £79 + £4 postage for a sv650

Re: Where to buy fitted chain and sprockets? London area.
That is cheaper than I was able to supply bike shops with the same stuff in 2001, and back then I was working for Bickers, the DID importer.

Re: Where to buy fitted chain and sprockets? London area.
Good afternoon.
VX is DID's economy chain. VM is DID's high grade chain. ZVM is DID's premium chain. VX isn't up to much, & it isn't the equivalent of the original chain, despite what they imply. That would be a VM. Buy the best you can afford. I wouldn't buy any of them I use Tsubaki :-) Cheers. |
Re: Where to buy fitted chain and sprockets? London area.
Thanks Spanner Man - that's great. Can you recommend where to buy Tsubaki chains? Dave

Re: Where to buy fitted chain and sprockets? London area.
For the extra tenner I'd always go for regular grade of chain rather than economy (I don't trust anything economy when it comes to things like that), and if money permits I'd fit premium grade. I've had no bad experiences myself of bad DID chain, and only know of one time nearly ten years ago when a duff batch entered the country... but that was ten years ago and nothing bad since. If we all based our opinions on products from incidents that happened and views held from ten years ago, there'd be no-one buying Dunlop tyres, KTMs, Aprilias, Ducatis and numerous other products available
My Versys has DID VM chain fitted from new - it's now done just under 15,000 miles and been adjusted three times, the most recent after a 4,000 mile hard ridden trip fully loaded to Malta and back. When I got home the chain had an extra 3/4 inch of slack - I can live with that considering I hadn't even looked at it in all the time I was away, I just let the Scottoiler do its thing. At a rough guess, there's another 15,000 miles left in that chain at the current rate of wear. Tsubaki is good chain, but a little pricier than DID for equivalent grades - you pays your money, you takes your choice |
