Giant Robot Project

Found this on a lesser forum, doesn't seem to have been on here... I love this guy, he's the Andrew WK of building giant robots.

Re: Giant Robot Project

By part 22 he's built a lot of the mechanical parts of the robot and got a workshop sorted on his land...some woman has showed up and is planting flowers in front of the "robot building"

The guy is inspiring in some ways to be honest, a little eccentric but doing what he wants and no caring about what is conventional and what others think.....he does need an off road bike for that land of his though!

Oi I'm not in any way eccentric, I mean in between poddling about with the lathe, fixing some motocross forks, rebuilding the odd shock, fixing my welder, all I've been doing is building a furnace to melt metal using waste oil which is perfectly normal.
Oh hang on.

But yeah I'll take some vids of big flames and such.

Hes mad and interesting all at the same time :)
He needs a lower TPi on the band saw blade, it would cut much quicker ;)

Re: Giant Robot Project

If you watch enough of the vids you'll see the girlfriend (note to reeder, even this guy has one!) and chain mail outfit for keeping fit always :)

He does seem to be slowly going mad :lol: Evil genius?....not sure yet....

Wow where the hell did my evening just go?? :o I think I started watching about 7.30pm. I'm on episode 20 now

He's nuts but funny :) and really quite brilliant with some of the stuff he comes up with. Very interesting, and I like how he doesn't really let you know what's going on as he builds lol

Re: Giant Robot Project

<potential spoiler alert!>
Watched all 68 giant robot vids (skipped little bits) and the giant robot worked to a degree but unless I missed other vids of it I never saw it operating fully, real shame especially as I spend so long watching his progress.
</potential spoiler alert!>

Mostly done with scrap aluminium and not a lathe in sight just grinder, pillar drill, band saw and welding gear. He's moved into kids toys of the same thing though it seems, first step in a steampunk society maybe :)

In all seriousness we do need more people like that guy in the world, gotta love his principles and creativity. It makes me feel like emigrating, buying some land and giving the free living thing a go.....

What's going on with the chainmail? He expecting the robot to come to life itself lol

Indeed, having his own piece of forest, being able to cut down trees, make planks and build...just quality!

Just reinforces my wants! One day I WILL migrate to Fiji (wife is Fijian) for the simple "good life"...one more baby on the way right now though so quite some wait yet for us...still could do it in a couple of years if we really want to, the mrs wants to keep small livestock (pigs, goats, chickens) and I want a small eco-tourism spot well out of the way. Not sure I'd be building robots though, maybe software applications and web sites instead...

lol, he went ape himself aye...wearing sandals when welding got me, freedom above all else :)

yorkie_chris 17-02-11 01:35 PM

Re: Giant Robot Project

Welding in sandals is amazing since he repeatedly mentions being careful about wearing long sleeved shirts...
I've been known to weld with a T shirt on, nice tan on 1 arm lol

Like the dome building
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjoyB...eature=channel

Seen a far cooler way to do it though, they pour a flat disc of concrete then inflate a membrane under it which lifts it into a dome shape.

Sounds pretty impressive

I would love to build an underground earth shelter when back in Fiji, rather than the standard colonial stylized stuff you see there. An earth shelter would be great to remove the need for air con so no large amount of elec are needed...what would be really cool would be to mine into the volcanic rock for the sleeping areas...need to buy the land first though

Don't know if anyone has been watching any of his other videos but I have and thought this deserved a bump. He is seriously awesome :D

I've watched all the robot ones and I'm working through most of the other projects he has been doing. I think I'm addicted lol. His house is just so cool. He's been on the local news too. You can see the videos here if you wait for the adverts
