Happy with insurance!

Must be the first of this type of threat but I thought it worth saying.

I have recently bought myself a GSXR 750 K7 and was fully expecting to have to pay nearly £1000 for tftp cover. Bearing in mind that I am going to be 23 on the day of collection with only 1 years no claims and three points.

Ended up paying £305 which included legal and breakdown cover! Thats with express insurance.

Well happy.

That's damn good! Was that 3rd party or fully comp?

Last time I checked for one of those with 1 years NCB it was more like £600 for me...off to get a new quote :)

haggle with them, i haggled mine and got it from 19 a month down to 11, and with free legal cover

If that's not the FC price, then what's the difference?

Say what? £305 < £1000

Its tftp. Going fully comp would be a false economy at my age considering hikes in insurance costs if I claimed, excess amounts etc.

I was asking if that was fully comp or TPFT basically.
Have you looked into a quote for fully comp?

ravingdavis 11-03-11 03:35 PM

Re: Happy with insurance!

I did, FC quote was £1350 with £1000 excess.

im happy too, just got full comp both bikes sv1000 and sv650 for £315 from swinton, ride any bike etc
thats half the price carol nash and 2/3 what bennets quoted. one company quoted me £700, i also check doing each individually (one using ncb the other with zero) and best i could get was £390

Kenzie 11-03-11 06:20 PM

Re: Happy with insurance!

Bennets did me the cheapest deal, £142 tpft. Have had my license since 2001 but not had my own bike since my RGV250 in 04. All going well picking up a K7 Pointy tomorrow. Suzuki Insurance went from £182 to £298 when I told them it was being kept at my parents. Bennetts went from £141 to £142, so how can Suzuki jusitfy slapping such a big hike on the premium?

monkey 11-03-11 06:36 PM

Re: Happy with insurance!

I suppose it depends where your parents live, postcode and all that.

Kenzie 11-03-11 06:45 PM

Re: Happy with insurance!

It was because it was not garaged at my parents. Didn't make much difference to Bennetts, they just changed it from garaged away from address to stored on the road.

mines with wicked quotes (sv650s kept on the drive passed test in dec)... i think its £209 FC with some added personal injury insurance... but im 31 :(... still paying my 125's insurance with swinton (will never use them again) even tho it was nicked and destroyed months ago.... gits wanted £75 to cancel the policy... grr

Not a bad deal, but tpft on something that valuable?

I paid 750gbp with a reasonable excess for fully comp on my k7 750 and I'm 21. 300gbp and if you bin it at fault you lose? I wouldn't be too over the moon.

Thats not a bad deal at all DP:cool: I didn't think CN would work in your favour....I wonder if they'll give me a rebate after the weekend when I take one bike off:rolleyes:

Its a calculated risk yes. But if I go for FC and have an at fault accident I will have to pay up to £1000 of the repair bill myself anyway plus the extra £700 I would have paid for insurance in the first place. And then there would be the issue of loosing my no claims and having to declare an 'at fault' claim on my insurance. Granted the bike is worth a lot but that is the risk.

Have no doubt I will!

Decided not to commute to work on it in the end. I'm going to buy a little YBR125 for that job. Save a fortune on petrol, servicing, tyres and any spills or scratches that come with commuting in rush hour.

Careful how you word it, falcon tried to charge me a cancellation fee to remove my GPZ from the policy (the premium was less than the cancellation fee that normally is just deducted from your pro-rata refund)

I agree with that logic, I'd do same.

Plus what are you going to do to it in the event of an off, unless you do a britney and set fire to it then you're fine, you can change a frame or a front end or some tupperware easily.

Exactly. In my case to make FC economical I would need to do £3k worth of damage to the bike which would mean destroying pretty much every part of the bike. This is of course possible.... but risk vs reward?

I guess probably makes sense for you then if those are the numbers.

Difference between fc and tpft has always been less than 100gbp, same for my car. So really the excess and loss of noclaims is the expense, and excess is 500 now. I just like the comfort of knowing if I bin it properly on my own I just pay my excess and its repaired/written off. Minor off I wouldn't bother with insurance.

Re: Happy with insurance!

I've used Express Insurance ever since I bought the SV because they were offering discounts on new Suzuki's and I have never been able to beat their prices since.

What is your commute Dave, are you staying in Staines and working at Bedfont?

Makes sense. You also have to take into account the difference in the accumulative annuity cost of the policy too. TPFT is over a grand cheaper for you (1350 down to 305?), so if you are crash free for three years, you've added 3 grand to your repair pot, before you even think about a grand excess. For older codgers like me FC is worth it (I was quoted £78 FC on the SV last year, but unfortunately that insurer didn't do multi-bike), but where there is a considerable risk, the FC insurance always costs more in the long term. It's why large companies only take TP insurance on company car fleets, and just pay for the repairs when they are needed, essentially underwriting their own FC cover.

well happy with my insurance as well, £80.06 fully comp plus £18.86 for legal expenses, didn't think this was too bad at all.

For now I do, I move to Bracknell next weekend which is further away from work. 17 miles to be exact so 34 miles a day. Just seems like a good idea to get a work horse for the commute rather than doing it on the GSXR. not 100% sure what to get yet, maybe a YBR, maybe something a little larger like a GPZ500.

Basically this will save on fuel, mileage, expensive tyres and servicing and reduce the risk of binning an expensive bike on a commute.

Depends if you are going to go through Ascot or down to the M3, along and back up. If doing motorway I'd want more than a 125 TBH, but then is the M3 moving at more than 50-60mph in rush hour anyway? YBR125's are certainly great on fuel and that would be your biggest saving, Miss YC posted a very high MPG figure recently. Quedos used to ride a CB250, I'll PM her and ask what MPG she used to get. I'd get a shaft driven CVT gearbox maxi-scoot for commuting myself, Suzuki Burgman et al, but then I have no street cred to uphold ;-)

Re: Happy with insurance!

I've been riding for over 8 years, have 5 years no claims (stopped for a couple of years so had to start again) then when i renewed this year my insurance went from £300 to £500 - fully comp with legal, accident, leather insurance etc
their excuse was, we had to raise the costs due to all the payouts for accidents in the snow last year!! feckers!
i consider insurance just a piece of paper to wipe your ass with!
it's not worth the paper it's written on, and they try to get out of paying anyway they can.
insurance use to be "incase sh*t happens" but now it's more like - wanna get screwed over, then buy insurance!

I will be going through Ascot for certain, I have done both routes during rush hour and the motorway is clogged while the back road flows quite nicely. The whole idea of this 2nd bike exercise is to save money so the 125 is ideal on that front... on the other hand I don't want to get stuck on a fast moving road with now power to get me out of trouble.

I really need to get a ride on a 125 to remind myself what they are actually like to be on. No point investing in one of these things to realise that I don't feel safe and then end up taking the gsxr to work anyway.

Edit: Weirdly it is cheaper for me to insure a GS500 than it would be a YBR125. Bikes are of equal value.

How about a 250 4-stroke off roader, that way you have something nice for the winter months too....just a thought

Off roaders are stupid expensive considering the "value" of the knackered heaps of crap you end up with.

But there was a h*nda CB350S for sale on here for £500 which would do the winter commuting trick very well.

CBf250 - i would get 70-80mpg easily though I did get 110mpg once!!
Easily hit the speed limits 70mph no prob's even with my hulk on it, great for commuting and so much fun to chuck about I can't fault it!

MCN review, Ride done a review too all based on commuting

Yeah! Need another pair of hands to help pull my XT out of a bog. Got it stuck up to the footpegs on Friday and had to pull it out on my own, lots of swearing and sweating with the bars in completely the wrong place having turned in the yoke clamps with the force I was having to exert to move the bike. I had visions of leaving it stuck in a hole and going off to get help. I looked like the michelin man who had been in a mud bath.

Re: Happy with insurance!

well there you go a meta 2 cat 1 alarm knocks £18.59 off your insurance premium,
well off the multi bike policy with the first bike having a cat 1 alarm anyway

ravingdavis 14-03-11 09:08 PM

Re: Happy with insurance!

Those CBf250s look like the perfect little bike for what I am after however they are still a little pricey it would seem, they are still pretty new. Want to keep this second bike to sub £800 if possible.

With my insurance it did not make any difference to the premium at all having an alarm or immobiliser on it.
