Just had my 1st off !!!!!

Just had my first accident on the bike. Following a toyota 4x4 and doing about 40, sun behind. Came over a crest to find the motor slowing rapidly, couldn't see brake lights as sun was behind me? Junction on the right, didn't know if they were going to turn or just stopping , car swerved as tho' going to turn right up side road then swerved back,
I tried to stop but put the back wheel 3 foot in the air and kissed the back bumper of car with my front tyre - that's when the bike went down on RH side.

Picked bike up and pushed to side, woman came out and said she stopped because she didn't know if i was going to pass her so she didn't turn right! There was no bloody indicator at any time!

Her husband turns up and want to phone cops and being all aggresive, managed to calm him down. I knew it was my fault because as the following vehicle should always be able to stop, never mind any signals.

We came to an agreement and he has just brought me £250 to pay for the damage to the bike. Damage limited to cosmetic as I was stopped when the bike went down. Same as if I had dropped it. Crash bung from Chewy's took the brunt.

Have posted in wanted for top fairing, RH side fairing and a RH mirror. Will have to get a brake pedal from dealer tonmorrow and will replace front indicator at some point, mild scuffing.

Knew I would fall off sometime, just glad it was a small off and my pride is more damaged than anything else.

Sorry to hear of your off mate, never nice to see your pride and joy damaged.

How come the husband gave you £250 if it was your fault for not stopping?

WeegieBlue 22-04-11 07:55 PM

You've won a watch there mate! Sounds like you were 100% liable in insurance terms so if he's paid up you've done well!

Glad you're ok, which is the main thing.

Yeah good point, hadn't thought of that, pay off to avoid anybody finding out?

You should join the police Pete, you've got a suspicious mind ;)

Re: Just had my 1st off !!!!!

That was my first thought but then I wondered if the guy was just scared his wife would **** up any litigation and end up 50/50ing it leaving them with massive premiums.

Glad you're Ok Ron, ride safe out there fella!

Must admit, no insurance was my first thoughts too... However, £250 should certainly take the sting out of it a little... Shopping in Scotspeed tomorrow by any chance?

Sorry to hear about the off!

glad it's mainly minor damage, and that no-one got hurt.

SIII 22-04-11 09:17 PM

Re: Just had my 1st off !!!!!

Thanks for the support.

Yes I am off to Scotspeed for a new rear brake lever, they dont bend very well, do they! Realised fairing bracket is also bent so will price that up as well.

Just think he realised his missus was in the wrong. we did the deal at the scene for £200 (i recond about £400 to fix myself, so he offered 1/2) and he turned up with £250!!!!! Nice people, farmers so probably well minted. She defo was not signalling, as my nose was about 3" from the rear corner of her motor as my back wheel was 3 foot in the air.

I know i was 100% liable but she was 100% her fault for not giving other road users a bloody clue what she was up to! I also did not want to do insurance as those robbing b*****ds would hit me something rotten next year and then after.

Holy crap! Can't believe they paid you! I wouldn't have! As for the no insurance thing, doubt it if they are farmers and in D+G...most of them have an "every vehicle in the world" policy!

Glad your OK, bikes fix.

Well done on the payout, you must have the gift of the gab there!

From your description it was 100% your fault whichever way you look at it. Whether she indicated or not you are responsible for being able to stop in the distance you can see to be clear. How do you know her indicator bulb didn't blow when she put them on, or at anytime in the last week (hands up all those who walk round the car checking indicators every day before driving away?) and the front was flashing at double the speed? You need to be able to account for that. You were obviously close because she said she aborted her right turn, because she thought you were going to overtake. As a biker I'd just be happy that she knew I was there, and she had thought about the possible consequences of a right turn if you did try to overtake her. Most car drivers don't put that much thought or observation into their driving.

Sorry to be a bit harsh, but if you talk like an accident is 100% another parties fault, when it's not, then you can't learn from the accident and prevent it from happening again. To learn from it, first you need to admit to yourself what actually happened and realise what you did wrong. (Obviously don't admit to anything at the roadside, but you need to admit it to yourself)

I am not disagreeing in any way with what you're saying, I just realized while reading it that most cars you'll see at least half your indicators get 'tested' when you push the unlock button on your key in order to get in ;)

Nice observation ;)

The amount of blown bulbs on the road is ridiculous though, another consequence of replacing police cars with speed cameras. Also the number of folk driving along with an indicator on when it shouldn't be. My driving instructor asked me all those years ago what a flashing indicator meant. When I told him, he replied "No! It means that the bulb is working!"

My old Volvo had a testing circuit thingy. There was a test light on the dashboard when you started the engine, and the first time you pushed the brake (thus illuminating the tail lights) it would go out... unless a bulb had blown. It drives me nuts when you're behind someone where only their CHMSL (Centre high Mount Stop Lamp... the third brake light) is working.

Re: Just had my 1st off !!!!!

I totally agree it was my Fault.:( I should have been far enough back to stop. I forgot one of my own golden rules on the bike - All car drivers are trying to kill you!

Why he offered to pay out I have no idea, i was a bit shell shocked after the off, and was pretty much resigned to just havin to pay out myself.

Brake lever ordered _ £42 !!!! the robbin gits, have drilled and put a bolt in so I can use the bike next week.

Fairing mounts bent back, exhaust sanded down and looks ok.

Have 'coloured' fairing in with permanent marker! just to hide white scratches till I can replace or paint.

If any body want to book me - Proffesional Stoppy King - my fee is £250 for a 30 second show.:smt040

Also, if one bulb goes on indys, the flasher relay flashes faster to let you know.

Glad to hear you came away ok, I've seen a friend come off far worse and end up with his hips pinned together.

A little scare now and again helps keep us on our toes :)

+1 its beyond a joke.

The indicator one is very true.

keith_d 23-04-11 02:14 PM

Re: Just had my 1st off !!!!!

Round here they don't want to risk blowing the indicator bulb, so they only use it on when there's a police car up their posterior passage. Actually, there is another time when I see cars indicate. It's when they've f****d up and need to cut across two lanes of traffic like NOW.

Sounds like SIII has learned the first lesson of motorcycling comparatively cheaply. Good that he's OK and the bike is fixable. Amazing that the car driver is contributing to repairs.

I'd like to meet that guy when he was in a good mood!

Conclusion; Thank your lucky stars, fill the lotto in and learn from your experience.

Re: Just had my 1st off !!!!!

Blown bulbs or just ignorant drivers? Seems to me it's mirror, manouvre, signal these days.

Leaving signals on is the silent killer for bikers, I think we're more culpable for that ourselves!

My biggest bug bear is when people approach a junction, slow right down, move to the line and THEN indicate....jesus, you would be better not bothering!!! GRRR!

Sorry to hear about your episode Ron, but more glad that your OK.
It sounds like you're on the case with getting your pride & joy back to being pristine.
Just remember that what happened to you could happen to anyone of us.

Take care & will see you soon.

Re: Just had my 1st off !!!!!

Cheers Fred, been working on bike all day, tidying up.

Have managed to repair, straighten, hide most of the damage. Quite surprised how well I have managed to get the bike tidied up, can hardly see damage from about 6 foot away. Have been pretty lucky with the minimal amount of damage. My brake lever repair looks trick.

Got quite a fright, will be slowed down for a few miles. Was not expecting that one, but I am sure there are more cage drivers out there (not)thinking up even more ways to get us!

+1. This is very true BTW.

I'm terrible for sitting on peoples tails on my XT600, partly 'cos it doesn't have the power to get past easy, so it has to start an overtake close and blat past with less distance to cover, and also it's tall so you get white van man syndrome, you can see straight over the top of cars, so you plan for the road in front of them, not for them.

So long as you see where the blame lies, which you do now, and you can say "Oh f**k, I won't do that again!", 'tis all that matters.
