Anyone into RC model flying in West Yorkshire?
 

Having just picked up a few old models (planes) from my dad's attic, I am hoping to get back into model flying in the next few weeks. Used to do it about oooohhh 15 years ago in Pontefract park and wondered if anyone else on here is close enough to come along as well. I was part of PANDAS (Pontefract and Normanton District Aeromodellers Society, catchy eh?) and was working towards my BMFA B rating.

If you aren't close enough, how far away are you and what/where do you fly?

I do but not as much lately, fly at 3 different places down here. Got planes and helis but to much to list all on spectrum and fly my electric in the fields down the road lol, I've got my B but only in fixed wing not rotary

There's a pretty decent chilled out club in Halifax, I think they do weekends and tuesdays up on Norland moor.

Been years since I dabbled about with them, I'm on a cycle every year or 2 when I start some engines up, go "mmmm castor oil", dust off realflight... then balk at the cost of replacing all my battery packs and put it all away again :(

How much harder is it flying helis rather than fixed wing? I've often thought about giving it a go but i think they would be harder to fix it it went tits up.

I'm the same Chris, about 3 years ago i went into crossgates model shop, spent about £70 on nicads etc and then did bugger all with them, complete waste :(

Now I've got the lathe I really fancy a go at building a turbine or turboshaft engine, could do with a milling machine too :-P
Built a delta years ago that was reckoned to do 200mph, that was fun while it lasted! Built a pulsejet at one point too but that never made it into a plane.

Helis make expensive crunching noises at the slightest mistake. They are cool though.

Chris I would love to have the time/space/experience required to justify a lathe. The last time I used one was in high school and I left the chuck key in and nearly took an eye out.

I remember seeing a fella with a few turbojet models some years back, he was having trouble starting one of them and we all stood round and watched as it set alight and melted, it was interesting to watch as the flame was nearly invisible.

They make a great noise though, would love to see that pulsejet of yours in action :)

Oh yeah, it would either work as intended or incinerate them in a fireball, either way :). Temperamental beasts to start!

I really fancy a go at FPV flying, but it's a lot of money on cameras and stuff that's likely to end up impacting something heavy at high speed.

Just googled FPV flying, looks like fun, starting off with a glider might help reduce the initial costs? not nearly as much fun I imagine though.

Foamie flying wings seem a popular choice, light, cheap, stable to fly. And electric is simpler to maintain.
Not sure that's much more expensive than a glider, except the initial cost of bigger battery and motor.

Actually seen it online with someone flying something like that 10 miles or more off the top of a mountain and down the way.

i always wanted to get into this, when i was younger i was as a county fair and there was a display team doing there thing with an array of helli's, was awsom, but as i have got older have decided to go and get my PPL instead any fly planes for real......a little more expensive, but the time will come!!!

Ah right, wasn't sure if you were thinking of converting an existing model or buying a new kit outright.

Spent £200 at the model shop today, new futaba tx/rx set so hopefully should be flying again soon :)

I would just stick it on some coroboard creation, they cost nowt and are impossible to kill.

I used to go up to Norland and fly my hand built super scorpion lol I was a kid at the time and I asked my dad for a model plane and he bought me some plans and all the balsa, glow motor, tran/rec... Tight git! it took three weeks with my tongue between my teeth to build it and I crashed it within a few months. I had a ducted fan F16 after that. The club at Norland has quad trials and hovercrafts too! looks like some kind of outward bound centre now.

heli's fly similar to planes when they're moving just have to include the tail rotor into the turns, hovering is the hardest thing to learn but once you've got that its simple

just rebuilt my 58" extreme flight extra. Had a heavy landing about a year ago and ripped the bottom out along with the undercarriage and not had the time to fix it. yesterday afternoon i thought i'd set apon it, due to the ribbed and braced construction the airframe is very fragile but light (as you can see in the pics), due to the fragility a slight knock and even picking it up wrong can break a rib or a brace, noting this understandably the damage to the bottom was fairly extensive so i ripped out most of what was left and rebuilt the bottom from scratch finally covering it this evening.

motor is a YS63FZ four stroke so it has some poke, will be running that on 20% yamada mix fuel, full spektrum 2.4 radio with high torque hitech and futaba servo's. Engine just needs the regulator and carb tuned and its ready to go. Cant wait for sat but knowing my luck it will rain :lol: but im looking forward none the less........ im such a super nerd :lol:

That's a nice looking model mate, think I understood half of about what you said :-)
Tried to get mine up this weekend, someone else took it up for a circuit (i've not flown for aaaages) but when it came for me to have a go the motor started playing up. It's not run for about twenty years.
It's a .61 webra with dynamix carbs. Must have had 30 people tell me 'by eck not seen one of those for ages they're fantastic engines when they're set up right'
Great can you help me set it up?

Oh well, i'll figure it out one of these days.

People from the older generation seen to rate webra but there not that amazing compared to stuff about now, still a pokey motor. Not sure if they're still going but I think Weston UK used the pattern but anodised the head pink and over tuned them, not sure I don't follow it anymore

It still has a nylon prop on it which apparently is a big no no these days as well. I'm gonna try get it going for another week. If I can't i'll just stick an OS lump I have laying about in there instead and sell the webra.

Now there's a question, no one seems to know. How apparently it looks a bit like a gangster but I had one of those before and i'd say its similar but not the same. I'm in london all week, i'll try get a pic up when I get back, i'll warn you, it's ancient lol
