Had an off :( - insurance job?

7:50 am today 5 mins from work. It had been raining the night before. I had travelled 25 miles already this morning. Came up to a roundabout, easy straight through. Bus had come out from the left junction which i thought it was back up the road i had just come down, no he was using the roundabout to u turn. Blipped the brakes (if i had went on i 'think' i might have made it). Front end went down on the left. I got thrown and slammed hard on the road. I spun a full 360. i had a back pack on and ended up on my back, the backpack actually helped. Happened in a flash when i came to a stop thats when i realised that i actually had an accident. Ive got skin burnt off my knee, a burn mark on my waist and hip. The hips sore and will have abruise to follow. Thumbs fractured. Bikes looking not bad considering. And worst of all the bus driver drove on and left me.
Luckily someone from the work seen me and someone else helped me to pick up the bike. I was able to ride it all the way home without any major issues.

Thing is with this sort of damage would it be worth to claim?

Damage: Front fairing cracked and scraped, L/H bar end grip burnt/ weight bent. Radiator bent. L/H indicator broke. L/H gear lever broke (still have the rubber toe grip) L/H heel plate bent in. Rear fairing scraped, subframe might be bent in a bit. Leather jacket scraped down the L/H arm (not right through), leather trousers knee scraped (minimal, think scuffed shoes). Boots fine. Helmet fine.

Ive rebuilt and engine and forks so i'm quite handy. I only got the bike back on the road a couple of months ago so 1st ti me fully comp'd this year with no no claims bonus (im sure the xs is 100-200) so i dont know how much 'ouch' it will be when renewals time comes.

Nae luck. :(

The economics of making a claim also depends on how much you're paying at the moment. For example, I'm £60 comp so I could take a fair percentage increase in premium without worrying about it. If I was paying £1,000 I might think twice.

If insurance premium's going to be a consideration for you, get on a comparison site and put through a quote with no bonus and a "fault" accident and see what comes out.

GWS.

My premiums around 230 yearly.

I wouldn't bother, looks pretty much rideable as it is

Sorry to hear about the off. The plastics will cost the most to repair but arn't a necessity. Personally I would just get whats needed fixed and leave the cosmetics till you had the money. I wouldn't claim, but then Im 19 so my premium would sky rocket.

Do what TamSV said, and go from there.

Crash bungs/frame sliders probably would have helped a bit there.

Bad times.

I wouldn't put it through insurance. They will write the bike off for that little bit of damage, and just think what they will charge you next year. £30 should get you back on the road, best of luck.

DarkDreamsGirl has a Fairing for sale at a budget price - its black, not blue but would get you sorted.

That would cost a fair bit to fix, the radiator and bodywork being the big money items. If you want genuine new parts to fix everything it would very probably be cheaper to go the insurance route and take the hit on the premiums, assuming you intend to keep the bike for some time.

Personally I would fix the essentials i.e. indicator, bent pegs, broken gear lever and then keep an eye out on eBay and the forum classifieds for some tidy panels. I assume the radiator isn't leaking? A new Delkevic radiator is significantly cheaper than a Suzuki one (though still not a cheap item).

Sorry to here about your off, hope your not aching to much today. Following your re build thread you know a good bit about your bike so i think you should fix it up yourself and if you get stuck then there's plenty on here who can help out.

Im sore today, knee feels better. radiators not leaking and i noticed svspares sells them damaged exactly the same way so it must be a common damage point but not that serious. Maybe considering how much ive learned to do then bodywork repair could be the next thing.
The side with the gear selectors the left hand side?

Ive got a mirror to replace repair, dunno if i could glue it and it would hold against the wind, its a clean break at the clamp/swivel point on the fairing. replace the indicator. am thinking drilling a hole through the gear selector where the toe peg broke off and bolt and double nut it, i could post the fix to that for all to see. The fairings will be a learning thing on how to do it. issue would be the l/h fairing decal getting the old one off but it just a bit of light surface scoring around it and i might get away with some touch up work to cover it. The rear isnt too bad a bit of deep scores abot thumb sized area. Bit of filling sand prime paint. Dont know if the whole farings would need done and price wise. Focussing on this will take my mind off the pain though.

Check local breakers yards. There's one by me that had an SV in,k5 radiator was good and they only wanted 50 notes for it (the rad).

Re: Had an off :( - insurance job?

k3 sv so dont know what versions bikes the radiator will be the same.

I might have a mirror - but wont have time to check till in the week. I am pretty sure I do have an indicator

I repaired similar damage to my fairing and you cant tell, I repainted it satin black. The drill and bolt approach works well, tho you could get a Fixer-peg and do it that way - failing that, there is a guy on ebay that does replacement that would fold back if you went down on that side again for about £20

As for the rear plastics -it MAY be as cheap to replace with a new part than repair and respray.

If you can afford the bike being off the road for a couple of weeks, maybe its time for a colour change :)

Re: Had an off :( - insurance job?

with the age of the bike and the damage the insurance company will write it off for sure. i would fix it myself as the parts second hand would come to what your excess is. plus your bike wont be registered as having been crashed.

the only pricey bit i can see is the radiator.

the only bits i have in the ''bin of doom'' that would help is a mirror.

Re: Had an off :( - insurance job?

I have repaired my gearlever by drilling a piece of round ally bar and drilling and tapping the lever 8m and then screwed in a 8m stainless allen bolt. Did it six years ago and it is still on with no problems.

That's pretty much what the repair peg does, works fine.

BIGSTEVE 23-07-11 02:42 PM

Not good to hear:/ hope the thumb and burns heal quick! Bike will mend easy.

;)

i' gonna cry with the amount of support you lot can give....

Gear - http://fixer-peg.co.uk/shop/article_...%26aid%3D11%26

I thought about how to fix the mirror, drill a hole in the middle each side of the broken parts, cut a nail down to size to the same depth of the holes in total. metal glue in the holes, place nail in and join together.

s'wat they do to pin bones eh?

so it would be a indicator to get it back on the road (probably.)

Sorry to hear about the crash! At least you got off (relatively) lightly. I wouldn't bother going through the insurance company with regards to the damage, it seems there are a few bits that need repairing sooner than others, i.e. it still looks usable so you can always repair the urgent bits then get everything else with time to spread the cost. :)
